County Road Blocked by Flooding
Photograph of a county road blocked by high water. This road has been blocked for 30 days and the water on both sides of the road has not drained or evaporated for 2 years. Cowpeas planted for a green pea crop have been drowned out. Approximately 400 acres of 5 farms effected by water as seen in photograph. Individual farmer can't do anything successfully about draining his land unless a master drainage plan is developed. Group drainage is needed. Soil units 9 and 15.

Levees to Protect Bottomland
Photograph of owner Walter Gray reports spending $35,000 on levees to protect his bottomland over a 20 year period. Large breaks in levees, along straightened creek, can be seen across field. Owner Gray said 450 acres were damaged seriously.

Finn Creek Flood
Photograph of Self Estate May 10 and 11 waters from Finn Creek crossed this bottomland field, depositing sediment and washing out young corn. Dikes protecting cropland has broken, unable to carry water after intense downpour. Water took out half mile of fencing along roadway.

Newly Constructed Farm Pond
Photograph of newly constructed farm pond. Watershed established to; Ky 31 fescue, button clover, black medic and alfalfa. This pond did not catch any water since it was constructed in Novemeber 1954 until a 6 inch rain in May 1955. The water coming out of the improved pasture was clear and free of silt.

Photograph of pecan trees. These pecan tress were fertilized in 1956 using about 40 pounds of 10-20-10 fertilzer per tree. Fertilizer worked into the ground under trees. This year the crop promises to be very good. OK-559-6.

Photograph that follows from Okla-456-A. Shows good pine reproduction in 50-acre area which was release cut in August 1950. Openings were created by girdling all oak six or more inches in diameter and by cutting or deadening smaller hardwood and brush. Pine trees are shortleaf and Loblolly. All pine growth is from natural reseeding. Alvin E. Howard, project conservationist, is examining pine reproduction. Camera postition marked by upright metal pipe painted yellow.
