DEVELOPMENT OF RING-JOINT FLANGES FOR USE IN THE HRE-2
Ring-joint flanges were studied in thermal-cycle tests as part of the development work associated with Homogeneous Reactor Experiment No. 2 (HRE-2). The purpose of this study was to provide criteria for design, installation, and operation of joints that would remain leaktight under reactor operating temperatures and pressures. Joints ranging from 1/2 in., l500 lb to 4 in., 2500 lb and with various initial bolt loadings were cycled between room temperature and 636 deg F. It was demonstrated that when joints were made up to HRE-2 standards and specifications, leak rates of less than 0.25 x 10/sup -3/ g of water per day per inch of gasket pitch diameter could be routinely- attained. Undamaged gaskets could be reinstalled or new gaskets used with equal probability of achieving acceptable leak rates. The system installed in HRE-2 was provided with a high-pressure buffer system to ensure that the small amount of leakage to the cell would be nonradioactive. (auth)

Neutron absorption lithium detector
It is planned to manufacture ceramic target elements for use in N-Reactor. The potential exists for overdilution of the lithium-aluminate with aluminum powder. One method of nondestructively determining the target element type is by neutron absorption. This technique makes use of the different thermal neutron cross sections of aluminum and lithium. The target element to be tested is placed between a neutron counter and a neutron source--the neutron count with the unknown sample is then compared with that of a standard. An experiment was conducted to determine if a neutron absorption instrument could be used to identify a lithium or aluminum target element. A sketch of the test arrangement is shown. Test results are presented.

Temperature Distribution, Moderator and Reflector Reactor Core
Studies were made to determine revised moderator coolant flow requirements in the EGCR core for the latest design. The temperature distribution in the graphite columns was also determined. The total moderator coolant flow was calculated to be 24,024 lb/hr and 31,020 lb/hr for full power and maximum anticipated power, respectively. It was concluded that the maximum moderator temperature (1220 deg F average over the cross section), at full power operation, occurs near the peak heat flux at a location 6.25 to 7.25 ft from the bottom of the active core. The temperature in most of the graphite columns varies from 555 to 1150 deg F over the lower half of the column and 1150 to 990 deg F over the top half of the column. The maximum surface temperature is less than 1110 deg F. Temperature distributions are shown on graphs. (M.C.G.)
