The Irradiated Rupture Prototype (IRP) Design

One of the problems involved in the design of NPR is the method to be used for decontamination, Considerable effort has been made in both laboratories and pilot plants in developing and evaluating decontamination processes under ideal conditions. Promising processes must be tested under prototypical conditions of velocity, water quality, manner of make-up, type and degree of contamination, addition of decontaminating solutions, and so on.

The Alpha Half-Life of the Isotope Pu-241 (open access)

The Alpha Half-Life of the Isotope Pu-241

A plutonium solution of known Pu-241 content was purified by solvent extraction techniques to remove uranium and americium impurities. Portions of this purified solution were then analyzed for U-237 as a function of time. Since the growth of U-237 occurs directly by the alpha decay of Pu-241, these measurements provided sufficient data for calculation of the Pu-241 alpha half-life, which was found to be 2.91 ± 0.50 x 10⁵ years.

Evaluation of Kanigen, Electroless Nickel Plating for Steam Side of a Sodium Component Steam Generator (open access)

Evaluation of Kanigen, Electroless Nickel Plating for Steam Side of a Sodium Component Steam Generator

Introduction: This is a final report on the evaluation of Kanigen electroless nickel plating for surfaces in contact with water and steam i a sodium heated AISI Type 316 stainless steel steam generator. The purpose of the coasting was to afford protection from stress corrosion cracking originating on the water-steam side of the unit. It has been concluded that the kanigen coating does not afford adequate protection for the services condition intended. This work was performed as part of the research and development program for the United States Atomic Energy Commission sodium Components Design Project.

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume II, Evaluation of Chemical Agents for Nuclear Reactor Decontamination (open access)

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume II, Evaluation of Chemical Agents for Nuclear Reactor Decontamination

Abstract: The caustic permanganate-rinse decontamination treatment was investigated. Loop and metallurgical studies were performed to determine optimum operating conditions as well as the metallurgical effects of the treatment. A treatment with 10 percent sodium hydroxide and 5 percent potassium permanganate solution followed by a rinse with a 5 percent ammonium citrate, 2 percent citric acid and 1/2 percent Versene solution was chosen for the decontamination of a stainless steel steam generator. Decontamination factors of greater than 50 were obtained in loop tests using the above treatment. Corrosion and metallurgical results indicated a total penetration of less than 0.01 mil on annealed Type 304 stainless steel with no evidence of any deleterious effects.

Radiochemical Analysis of Crud from the Army Package Power Reactor (open access)

Radiochemical Analysis of Crud from the Army Package Power Reactor

Abstract: A study has been made of the radiochemical composition and the specific activity of insoluble corrosion products (crud) removed from the primary system of the APPR-1. This report presents the results of analysis of twelve crud samples collected during the interval from September 3, 1957 to December 1, 1957. The samples were radiochemically analyzed for long-lived gamma emitting nuclides only. Data are presented on the measured values of the specific activity of crud, the ratios of the nuclide specific activities, and the concentration of crud (crud level) in the circulating primary water. Also included in data, based on the analysis of a single sample, comparing the specific activity of the deposited and circulating corrosion products.

Energy Distribution of Fast Neutron Beam (open access)

Energy Distribution of Fast Neutron Beam

Experimental techniques are described for the spectral measurement of a collimated fast neutron beam. A hydrogen filled cloud chamber, proton recording nuclear plates, and threshold fission foils were used as neutron detectors in the measurements. As an application of the above technique, the energy distribution and absolute flux of the fast neutron beam emerging from port 5W of the Los Alamos fast rector has been measured from 0.1 Mev to 18 Mev. The result show a spectral curve possessing a maximum between 9.25 and 0.30 Mev and having an exponential decrease at energies above 1.5 Mev. The mass energy of the distribution is at 0.55 Mev and the slope of the exponential section is 3.1 - 0.1 Mev per decade of intensity decrease.

Experimental investigation of dynamic relations in a 48-inch ram-jet engine (open access)

Experimental investigation of dynamic relations in a 48-inch ram-jet engine

Engine dynamics were investigated for supercritical operation of the ram jet at Mach 2.75 over a range of simulated altitudes from 68,000 to 82,000 feet. Indicial-and frequency-response tests were conducted with fuel flow as the input variable. For a wide range of operating points, the response of static or total pressure to fuel flow consisted of a dead time followed by a response form that generally approximated a linear, first-order, lead-lag. The dead time varied significantly only with distance from the combustion zone. The rise ratio and the time constant of the lead-lag function were nearly independent of the pressure sensed.

Tabulated Pressure Coefficient Data from a Tail Loads Investigation on a 1/15-Scale Model of the Goodyear XZP5K Airship

This paper contains tail and hull loads data obtained in an investigation of a l/15-scale model of the Goodyear XZP5K airship. Data are presented in the form of tabulated pressure coefficients over a pitch and yaw range of +/-20 deg and 0 deg to 30 deg respectively, with various rudder and elevator deflections. Two tail configurations of different plan forms were tested on the model. The investigation was conducted in the Langley full-scale tunnel at a Reynolds number of approximately 16.5 x 10(exp 6) based on hull length, which corresponds to a Mach number of about 0.12.

Relative loading on biplane wings

Recent improvements in stress analysis methods have made it necessary to revise and to extend the loading curves to cover all conditions of flight. This report is concerned with a study of existing biplane data by combining the experimental and theoretical data to derive a series of curves from which the lift curves of the individual wings of a biplane may be obtained.

Effect of Various Blade Modifications on Performance of a 16-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor 3 - Effect on Over-All Performance Characteristics on Increasing Stator-Blade Angles in Inlet Stages

The stator-blade angles in the first four stages of a 16-stage axial-flow compressor were increased in order to decrease the angles of attack of these stages, and thereby to improve part-speed performance. The performance of this modified compressor was compared with that of the same compressor with original blade angles.

Theoretical lift and damping in roll at supersonic speeds of thin sweptback tapered wings with streamwise tips, subsonic leading edges, and supersonic trailing edges

"On the basis of linearized supersonic-flow theory, generalized equations were derived and calculations made for the lift and damping in roll of a limited series of thin sweptback tapered wings. Results are applicable to wings with streamwise tips and for a range of supersonic speeds for which the wing is wholly contained between the Mach cones springing from the wing apex and from the trailing edge of the root section. A further limitation is that the tip Mach lines may not intersect on the wing" (p. 395).

Fabrication Procedure For RaLa Source Fuel Rods

A new method to procure RaLa sources was proposed by Group CMR-10, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. This method depended upon irradiation of small-diameter U235 wire in the Materials Testing Reactor, Arco, Idaho. A procedure for cladding and sealing U235 wire in stainless steel tubing, by drawing, plugging the tube ends, and welding, was developed, tested, and proved to be satisfactory.
