[Visual Arts]

A newspaper clipping featuring a snippet on the current projects at the University of North Texas. Six North Texas elementary schools were selected to participate in the nationwide $15 million Arts Partner Schools project. Each school will receive $25,000 - $35,000 annually for five years that cove teacher training, curriculum development, and testing to see if a comprehensive cross curricular approach to teaching visual arts has a positive effect on childhood education.

Oral History Interview with William Akers, April 6, 1997

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with William Akers. Akers joined the Navy I n1944 and trained at San Diego. After training he went to an air station in California before being assigned to CASU 53 and going to Guam. From there, Akers went to a seaplane base on Saipan aboard the USS Kitkun Bay (CVE-71). On Saipan, he serviced aircraft by refueling and rearming, etc. Akers was discharged in 1946.

EM experiments for computational model validation for AH-1S Cobra Helicopter (open access)

EM experiments for computational model validation for AH-1S Cobra Helicopter

The effort described here describes a set of outdoor experiments performed on the AH-1S Cobra helicopter in order to validate and compare to the computational electromagnetic models of the bulk structure of the airframe in the frequency bands up to 4 GHz. Also included in this were coupling measurements to wires and cables inside of the airframe and various cavity to HPM pulse in this frequency range as part of other activities. Additionally, the low power modeling compression will be completed in this time frame.

Minority Energy Technical Assistance Program (METAP): Phase 1. Final technical report

The Phase 1 Triple E (Energy, Economic development, Environment) METAP series has been a success. Its broad acceptance and considerations of exceptional quality and substance by the man seminar participants who attended in the seven cities, have made the businesses of community empowerment, education, and awareness as they relate to energy, obviously important. Many community leaders and legislators have expressed their immense gratitude to the US Department of Energy, for initiating such an important agenda within their communities. There have been over 110 legislators and almost 1,200 participants collectively, who have participated in this very valuable initiative. The participants range from community leaders and legislators to members from the private and public sectors, universities, not for profits, civic and church leaders. Highlights and accomplishments of these seminars are summarized.

Electropholic Transition Metal Complexes: Catalysis of Isotope Exchange. April 1, 1992 - December 3, 1996. Final Report. (open access)

Electropholic Transition Metal Complexes: Catalysis of Isotope Exchange. April 1, 1992 - December 3, 1996. Final Report.

The central aim of this project is to exploit transition metal dihydrogen complexes to develop catalysts for isotope exchange reactions between hydrogen and substrates such as water. The authors have partially met this goal by the synthesis of novel cationic rhenium complexes of the form [Re(CO){sub 3}(PR{sub 3}){sub 2}(H{sub 2})]{sup +}. These complexes bind hydrogen somehwat more strongly than the neutral tungsten analogs but also activate the bound H{sub 2} to heterolytic cleavage. Thus rapid proton (deuteron) exchange between hydrogen and water can be achieved. An example of this reaction is the rapid formation of bound HD from the complex [Re(CO){sub 3}(PR{sub 3}){sub 2}(H{sub 2})]{sup +} and deuterium gas. Rapid incorporation of deuterium from D{sub 2}O has also been observed. In these systems, the competitive binding of water to the metal center is a drawback. The affinity of the Re center for water depends upon the nature of the phosphine ligands, with the presumably more electrophilic PPh{sub 3} complex binding water strongly and irreversibly, while the PCy{sub 3} complex binds water reversibly. These results have been published in J.Am.Chem.Soc 1994, 116, 4515 and J.Am.Chem.Soc 1997, 119, 4172.

Improved Efficiency of Miscible C02 Floods and Enhanced Prospects for C02 Flooding Heterogeneous Reservoirs (open access)

Improved Efficiency of Miscible C02 Floods and Enhanced Prospects for C02 Flooding Heterogeneous Reservoirs

The PRRC-modified DOE pseudomiscible reservoir simulator MASTER was used to conduct a systematic investigation of CO2 flooding using horizontal wells in conjunction with foam. We evaluated the effects of horizontal well radius, length, and location on oil recovery through our testing. This work is necessary to provide field predictions for the use of foam and/or horizontal wells. A number of coreflood tests were performed to examine the effect of foam on oil recovery in heterogeneous porous media. Two coaxial composite cores were used to simulate layered formation systems. The first, an isolated coaxial composite core, was used to simulate a layered formation system of which the layers were not in communication. The second, in capillary contact, simulated layers in communication. Preliminary results suggest that oil displacement is more efficient when surfactant solution is used with CO2 to form CO2-foam. Results from both systems indicate the potential of using foam for improving oil recovery in heterogeneous porous media. Since injectivity loss is a problem in a number of gas injection projects, a preliminary investigation of injectivity loss in WAG was performed. A number of tests were carried out to investigate injectivity loss, indicating that for a given rock the injectivity loss …
