Pair production of helicity-flipped neutrinos in supernovae (open access)

Pair production of helicity-flipped neutrinos in supernovae

We calculate the emissivity for the pair production of helicity-flipped neutrinos, in a way that can be used in supernova calculations. We also present some simple estimates which show that such processes can act as an efficient energy-loss mechanism in the shocked supernova core, and we use this fact to extract neutrino mass limits from SN1987A neutrino observations. 24 refs., 2 figs.

Atomic and molecular surface and volume processes in the analysis of negative hydrogen discharges (open access)

Atomic and molecular surface and volume processes in the analysis of negative hydrogen discharges

The principal source of negative ion generation in hydrogen discharges is now recognized to be low-energy electron attachment to H/sub 2/(/nu//prime//prime/) molecules excited to the middle portion of the vibrational spectrum. Electron excitation processes are generally taken to be the principal source of H/sub 2/(/nu//prime//prime/) generation, with high-energy excitations through the singlet spectrum being the principal excitation process populating the active portion of the vibrational spectrum. A description of the collisional re-excitation from level /nu//prime//prime/, to level /nu//prime//prime/, requires 15 /times/ 15 matrix of cross sections linking all initial and final levels. These cross sections have been evaluated and incorporated into the modelling code. An additional source of vibrational excitation may be derived from recombination of H/sub 2//sup +/ and H/sub 3//sup +/ ions on the surfaces of the discharge. In this case the molecular ions will impinge with kinetic energies given by the plasma potential, 1--10 eV. In this paper we report the evaluation of H/sub 2/(/nu//prime//prime/) resulting from the surface recombination process. The use of low-work-function materials for the discharge surfaces makes possible two additional source of negative ions: the direct formation of negative ions by hydrogen atoms rebounding from the surface, and the dissociation of H/sub 2//sup …

A VERY Informal Note on Cooling Pbars from the Main Injector (open access)

A VERY Informal Note on Cooling Pbars from the Main Injector

For the Accelerator Upgrade (Phase I), we have chosen to upgrade the cooling in the following ways: (A) Increasing the existing 800 W system to 1600 W. (B) Adding momentum cooling (2x reduction in {Delta}p). (C) Increasing the electrode gap by {radical}(30/20). The electrode gap increase makes the yield greater at the price of reducing the cooling efficiency. The performance of the cooling system has been calculated in the approximation that the cooling process can be described by a Fokker-Planck equation. It appears that the existing anti-proton source can do fairly well with the anti-proton flux which is expected from the main injector. The Debuncher cooling will be noticeably inefficient, but probably acceptable. Improvements can be made by changing the Debuncher bandwidth to 4-8 GHz (perhaps several M$) or by increasing the accumulator aperture (15{pi} would be ambitious, but maybe not crazy). The existing 1-2 GHz stack tail system performs surprisingly well on paper - capable of fluxes up to 1.4 x 10{sup 11} per hour. However, it is not clear that our 'as built' stack tail system is really that good - having achieved a maximum of 0.6 x 10{sup 11} to date. Futhermore, there are noticeable problems with …
