Liquid metal bearings technology for large, high-temperature, sodium rotating machinery. Development and test of high-temperature proximity probe for use in liquid sodium. Fourth topical report
An inductance-type, proximity-probe system for measurement of bearing film thicknesses and shaft orbits in high-temperature, liquid-sodium environment has been developed, built and tested. The probe system is designed to operate at temperatures up to 1200/sup 0/F and gap range of 0.004'' to 0.080'', with good linearity over about three-quarters of the range, when using probe pairs connected in push-pull. The probes were tested extensively in both gas and sodium environments, culminating in a 684 hours continuous test in a temperature range of 1050/sup 0/F to 1170/sup 0/F. The probes operated stably, repeatably and without undergoing performance changes.

Study on the Adsorption of Radioisotopes in Solution: I - Adsorption of Pu(IV) in a Sulfuric Acid Media
The adsorption of tetravalent plutonium on glass and platinum in a sulfuric acid solution was studied in the concentration range of the order of 10sup(-5)M. The adsorption is reversible, decreases with an increase in acidity and, in all the cases examined, quite weak (less than 0.01%). It follows the Freundlich isotherm on glass and the Langmuir isotherm on platinum.

Shock-Absorbing Materials, Report 2: Cellular Concrete as a Backpacking Material
Partial abstract: "The use of low-density cellular concrete, having an oven-dry unit weight of 50 pcf or less, as a backpacking material for deeply buried protective structures was studied. Cellular concrete was found to be suitable for this type of application. A number of physical properties of cellular concrete were determined to provide input to design codes" (p. 4).

Test of Proportional Wire Chambers in Hybrid Systems
This is an agreement between the National Accelerator Laboratory and Professor I. Pless of MIT representing the experimenters to provide selected instrumentation for the beam to the 30-inch bubble chamber, and to use the hybrid chamber for an experiment. This document contains an enumeration of the major items needed for the proper execution of Experiment No. 154 as expressed in the proposal for the experiment, subsequent correspondence, and the draft agreement. This agreement covers phases I and II of the experiment. In Phase I the experimenters will design, construct and bring into operation a complete upstream proportional chamber system. This system will tag incident beam particles as to type by correlating the Cerenkov signals furnished by NAL with the proper incoming particle. In addition, the system will measure the position of the incident particle which passed through the momentum slit. The system will contain three proportional wire chambers (3 planes each) which will provide data suitable for defining the incident beam both as to position and angle. The experimenters will furnish the computer, magnetic tape units, programs, and all necessary readout and interface hardware. Deflection-Coverage Relationship for Flexible Pavements
Summary: "This study was conducted for the purpose of developing a relationship between elastic pavement deflection and pavement performance (number of traffic applications necessary to cause failure). Data for the study were taken from past studies of airfield and highway pavements. A summary of test conditions, failure criteria, and traffic type is given for each data source. A relationship was developed between elastic deflection and the number of coverages of traffic for combined airfield and highway data and for airfield data only. The relationship of wheel load and tire pressure is given, and a multiple-regression equation was determined to predict coverages as a function of wheel load, tire pressure, and deflection" (p. xi).
