Bates solar industrial process steam application environmental impact assessment

It is planned to install 34,440 square feet of linear parabolic trough solar collectors at a new corrugator plant for making corrugated boxes. The system is to operate in parallel with a fossil fuel boiler. An assessment is presented of the impacts of the solar energy system on the existing environment and to determine whether or not a more detailed environmental impact statement is needed. The environmental assessment is based on actual operational data obtained on the collector, fluid, and heat transport system. A description of the design of the solar energy system and its application is given. Also included is a discussion of the location of the new plant in Fort Worth, Texas, and of the surrounding environment. Environmental impacts are discussed in detail, and alternatives to the solar industrial process steam retrofit application are offered. It is concluded that the overall benefits from the solar industrial process heat system outweigh any negative environmental factors. Benefits include reduced fossil fuel demand, with attending reductions in air pollutants. The selection of a stable heat transfer fluid with low toxicity and biodegradable qualities minimizes environmental damage due to fluid spills, personal exposure, and degradation byproducts. Development and production cost analysis for subatmospheric Brayton system for Brayton-cycle heat-recovery system, characterization program, Subtask A. 4. 2. 4 of Phase I program plan

This document reports on the cost analysis previously performed for a subatmospheric Brayton cycle system sized to operate off the waste heat of a nominal 200-ton per day glass container furnace. Along with product value and operating costs, the cost data for system components is one of the essential elements required for analyses and prediction of the return-on-investment for a Brayton system. The expected ROI or payback will in turn impact the marketability of the system. This report describes estimated costs in 1978 dollars for both the first development system and for a mature system. Development system costs include design, fabrication, and test cost elements for each major component as well as identified tooling costs.

Stress Analysis of the SM-1A Reactor Vessel

The stress analysis performed on the SM-lA reactor vessel and cover is presented. The msximum combined stress (51,360 psi in compression) occurs in the vessel cover during a 50 deg F/hr transient. A fatigue analysis of these stresses indicated that they could be applied safely at least 2500 times, and since the vessel is expected to receive less than 900 cycles, it should not suffer any fatigue damage. MARITIME GAS-COOLED REACTOR PROGRAM QUARTERLY PROGRESS REPORT FOR PERIOD ENDING, SEPTEMBER 30, 1960

The feasibility was studied and a cost estimate prepared of an experimental reactor to determine the operating characteristics of beryllia- moderated, gas-cooled systems wtthin a power limit of 10 Mw(t). The heat energy produced by the experimental reactor is to be dissipated in a heat dump. No machinery for production of power was to be provided. Other requirements were that the reactor should be capable of testing core types different from the current MGCR design, and the system should permit use of gases other than helium. It was further directed that the reactor should be designated BORE for Beryllium- Oxide Reactor Experiment. Reactor development work was mainly in connection with the BORE preliminary design. It was established that the most important information which could be provided by a 10 Mw(t) reactor experiment would be on performance of fuel elements and moderator bodies. This required that the experirment duplicate the power density in the fuel and moderator that would exist in the full size reactor and made it advisable to use full length fuel elements. This resulted in an unconventionally shaped core which is roughly cylindrical with the length more than twice its mean diameter. Studies continued on performance of fuel …

Process Development and Fabrication of PbTe Thermoelectric Elements

The development and fabrication of Pb-Te pellets, contacted to Fe end caps, for use as elements in thermoelectric converters for the SNAP 10A program, is described. The method adopted consists of contacting, by hot pressing in a controlled atmosphere, 24 pellets simultaneously, using q-layer, 8-cavity graphite dies. The optimum hot pressing parameters were found to be 5000 psi at 1550 deg F for 30 min. Several thousand elements were produced by this relatively high-volume process, modifying the normally slow and expensive hot pressing by the use of multilayer, multicavity dies and automatic controls. Controlled Synthesis of Polyenes by Catalytic Methods. Progress Report for the period December 1, 1989 - November 30, 1992

A more direct approach to polyenes by the direct polymerization of acetylenes has been achieved. We were able to show that polymerization of acetylene itself can be controlled with a well- characterized alkylidene catalyst, but only if a base such as quinuclidine is present in order to slow down the rate of propagation relative to initiation. (Quinuclidine may also stabilize vinylalkylidene intermediates formed in the reaction). Unfortunately, living polyenes'' were no more stable than isolated polyenes, and so this approach had its limitations. Direct polymerization of acetylene by Mo(CH-t-Bu)(NAr)(O-t-Bu){sub 2} was more successful, but inherent polyene instability was still a problem. The most important result of the past grant period is the finding that dipropargyl derivatives (HC=CCH{sub 2}XCH{sub 2}C=CH; X = CH{sub 2}, C(CO{sub 2}R){sub 2}, SiR{sub 2}, etc.), which have been reported to be cyclopolymerized by various classical catalysts by as yet unknown mechanisms, are polymerized by Mo(CH-t-Bu)(NAr)(OCMe(CF{sub 3}){sub 2}){sub 2} in dimethoxyethane. We speculate that intramolecular formation of a five-membered ring in the product of {alpha} addition is fast enough to yield another terminal alkylidene on the time scale of the polymerization reaction, while a six-membered ring is formed in a reaction involving a more reaction terminal alkylidene. …

3D field harmonics

We have developed an harmonic representation for the three dimensional field components within the windings of accelerator magnets. The form by which the field is presented is suitable for interfacing with other codes that make use of the 3D field components (particle tracking and stability). The field components can be calculated with high precision and reduced cup time at any location (r,{theta},z) inside the magnet bore. The same conductor geometry which is used to simulate line currents is also used in CAD with modifications more readily available. It is our hope that the format used here for magnetic fields can be used not only as a means of delivering fields but also as a way by which beam dynamics can suggest correction to the conductor geometry. 5 refs., 70 figs.

Process development for automated solar cell and module production. Task 4: automated array assembly

The scope of work under this contract involves specifying a process sequence which can be used in conjunction with automated equipment for the mass production of solar cell modules for terrestrial use. This process sequence is then critically analyzed from a technical and economic standpoint to determine the technological readiness of each process step for implementation. The process steps are ranked according to the degree of development effort required and according to their significance to the overall process. Under this contract the steps receiving analysis were: back contact metallization, automated cell array layup/interconnect, and module edge sealing. For automated layup/interconnect both hard automation and programmable automation (using an industrial robot) were studied. The programmable automation system was then selected for actual hardware development. Economic analysis using the SAMICS system has been performed during these studies to assure that development efforts have been directed towards the ultimate goal of price reduction. Silicon web process development. Annual report

During this reporting period significant milestones have been met. A new barrier crucible design which consistently maintains melt stability over long periods of time has been successfully tested and used in long growth runs. The pellet feeder for melt replenishment was operated continuously for growth runs of up to 17 hours (a one day growth cycle). The liquid level sensor comprising a laser/sensor system was operated, performed well, and meets the requirements for maintaining liquid level height during growth and melt replenishment. An automated feedback loop connecting the feed mechanism and the liquid level sensing system was designed and constructed and, during the preparation of this report, operated successfully for 3 1/2 hours demonstrating the feasibility of semi-automated dendritic web growth. The web throughput task has resulted in a demonstration of wider good quality web as well as a demonstration of higher throughput rates. The accomplishments during the report period are described in detail. The economic analysis of the dendritic web process was updated. The sensitivity of the cost of sheet to variations in capital equipment cost and recycling dendrites was calculated; and it was shown that these factors have relatively little impact on sheet cost. An intensive theoretical program was launched to try to understand the conditions for safe propagation of intense beam currents in focussing systems, such as continuous and interrupted solenoid lens systems, and quadrupole strong-focussing systems. Analytic methods have led to significant advances in understanding of the new problems; with computational techniques a large amount of new information has been generated on space-charge-dominated transport phenomena; also, at this time a new LBL particle numerical simulation code is almost ready to give new results. Because the Bevalac is an operating heavy ion linac and synchrotron facility with an ongoing R and D effort and in expectation of imminent upgrading to bring it up to a uranium-ion capability, it was a natural choice to make an addition to these activities to examine low-..beta.. rf accelerating structures and ion sources suitable for HIF. Hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance basic data for Rapid City NTMS Quadrangle, South Dakota

Results of a reconnaissance geochemical survey of the Rapid City Quadrangle are reported. Field and laboratory data are presented for 417 groundwater and 477 stream sediment samples. Statistical and areal distributions of uranium and possible uranium-related variables are displayed. A generalized geologic map of the survey area is provided, and pertinent geologic factors which may be of significance in evaluating the potential for uranium mineralization are briefly discussed. Groundwater data indicate that the most promising areas for uranium mineralization are in the central portion of the quadrangle in the Pierre Shale. Three main clusters of groundwater samples with high uranium values occur here. Associated with the high uranium concentrations are high values for calcium, potassium, magnesium, strontium, and specific conductance. Stream sediment data indicate high concentrations of uranium are usually found in the Pierre Shale. Scattered samples occur in the Graneros Shale and in the Paleozoic and Precambrian units of the Black Hills. Arsenic, cobalt, and yttrium are associated with the areas of high uranium concentration. No areas are indicated with strong potential for uranium mineralization.

Analysis of options for a solar development bank. Task VI

Financial barriers which hinder the use and acceptance of solar technology in the building and industrial markets are identified. The barriers fall under three categories: risk, liquidity, and subsidy. Policy initiatives that can be used to overcome financing barriers which hinder the use of solar technology are briefly mentioned. These include direct lending programs operated by the government or by private banks and secondary financing organizations which provide liquidity and security to mortgage lenders. Policy options considered to accomplish the objectives of the initiatives and the evaluation of each option is presented. Options considered are: to modify existing governmental programs and institutions so that these institutions more effectively promote the use of solar energy; to create a new and separate institution to undertake a number of financing functions; and to create a direct federal loan program. The proposed functions of a Solar Development Bank are specifically examined. Information on functions and participants in the secondary mortgage market is discussed in the appendix. The text of a presidential speech on the technically feasible use of solar powered units is given. (MCW)

The objective of this research program is to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of producing solar-cell-quality sheet silicon by coating one surface of carbonized ceramic substrates with a thin layer of large-grain polycrystalline silicon from the melt. In the past year significant progress was made in all areas of the program. The physical and chemical properties of the standard mullite refractory used for the majority of the coating runs (McDanel MV20 and Coors S1SI) have been characterized. A number of experimental compositions have been identified and procured from Coors. Characterization of the standard compositions revealed that the thermal expansion of mullite depends on both relative amounts of glass phase and on the impurity level in the glass. Since the thermal expansion in mullite exceeds that of silicon, the silicon coating should be in a state of compression. This was confirmed by x-ray measurements. After modifying and cleaning the dip-coating facility, silicon on ceramic (SOC) solar cells were fabricated which demonstrate that the SOC process can produce silicon of solar cell quality. SOC cells having 1 cm/sup 2/ active areas demonstrated measured conversion efficiencies as high as 7.2 percent. The appendices include some modern computer based approaches to predicting pressure drop for designing compressed air distribution systems. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) has an overall mission to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and mismanagement in Department of Energy (DOE) programs. As part of its responsibility in accomplishing its mission, the DOE Office of Audits publishes an Annual Work Plan'' in September of each year. The prime focus of the plan is to identify opportunities for audits to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and integrity of the DOE's programs and operations. Through this plan, we are able to maximize the effectiveness of our resources and to avoid duplicating audit coverage being provided by other audit groups, such as the US General Accounting Office (GAO) to US Department of Energy programs. Such planning is required by Office of Management and Budget Circular A-73 and DOE Order 2321.1A. This work plan, includes those audits that are to be carried over from Fiscal Year 1991 and those that are to be started during Fiscal year 1992.
