D0 Silicon Upgrade: Thermal Analysis of the D0 3 CHIP Single Sided Ladder

The design of the D0 single sided 3 chip ladder is shown in figures 1-3. The SVX II chips are mounted directly opposite the cooling channel so that they are most efficiently cooled. Outboard of the cooling channel on the ladder top side is mounted a flex hybrid of copper/kapton. which is adhered to a beryllium substrate using a two part epoxy. The beryllium substrate. aside from providing a solid mounting structure for the flex circuit. provides a thermal conduction path between the components on the hybrid which dissipate heat and the cooling channel. The thickness of the top and bottom beryllium substrates is selected based on the [expected] channel temperature. the power dissipation of the SVX II chips, the power dissipation of the hybrid passive components, and the maximum acceptable silicon temperature within the ladder. The thermal conductivity of the various materials within the ladder must be known to a fair degree of confidence in order to accurately simulate the ladder steady state cooling performance. The thermal conductivity of a number of ladder epoxy candidates was measured using a device at Lab D at Fermilab. Preliminary measurements at Lab D, using a similar setup. have been performed in order …

Forces and Stored Energy in Thin Cosine (n0) Accelerator Magnets (open access)

Forces and Stored Energy in Thin Cosine (n0) Accelerator Magnets

We wish to compute Lorentz forces, equilibrium stress and stored energy in thin multipole magnets (Fig.1), that are proportional to cos(n{theta}) and whose strength varies purely as a Fourier sinusoidal series of the longitudinal coordinate z (say proportional to cos (2m-1){pi}z/L where L denotes the half-period and m = 1,2,3...). We shall demonstrate that in cases where the current is situated on such a surface of discontinuity at r = R (i.e. J = f({theta},z)), by computing the Lorentz force and solving the state of equilibrium on that surface, a closed form solution can be obtained for single function magnets as well as for any combination of interacting nested multi function magnets. The results that have been obtained, indicate that the total axial force on the end of a single multipole magnet n is independent (orthogonal) to any other multipole magnet i as long as n {ne} i. The same is true for the stored energy, the total energy of a nested set of multipole magnets is equal to the some of the energy of the individual magnets (of the same period length 2L). Finally we demonstrate our results on a nested set of magnets a dipole (n = 1) …

UCF WASTE PACKAGE SHIELDING ANALYSIS/2-D DORT (SCPB: N/A)

This analysis is prepared by the Mined Geologic Disposal System (MGDS) Waste Package Development Department (WPDD) to determine the dose rates from the UCF waste packages to be used by the EBS and other repository systems to incorporate ALARA practices in the overall repository design in compliance with the goals of the Waste Package Implementation Plan for conceptual design. These design calculations are performed in sufficient detail to provide a comprehensive comparison base with other design alternatives. The objectives of this evaluation are (1) to show the dose rate as a function of distance from the waste package surface and (2) to provide the shielding thicknesses required for the waste package transporter to meet a 10 mr/hr target dose rate at 2 meters from the transporter surface.

Development of improved x-ray optics for analytical x-ray microbeams. CRADA final report for CRADA Number Y-1294-0283 (open access)

Development of improved x-ray optics for analytical x-ray microbeams. CRADA final report for CRADA Number Y-1294-0283

The purpose of this CRADA was to develop improved glass capillary, x-ray optics for analytical x-ray microbeam applications. X-Ray Optical Systems, Inc. (XOS) designed and fabricated capillary optics and LMES tested those optics for x-ray microanalytical applications using its unique X-Ray Microprobe. Tapered capillaries with 3-{micro}m and 8-{micro}m output openings were fabricated and tested. The tapered capillaries had better spectral quality for x-ray microfluorescence (XRMF) analysis, than non-tapered, straight capillaries that are currently used in the system. X-ray beam count-rates for the tapered capillaries were also greater than the straight capillaries. Two monolithic, polycapillary optics were fabricated and tested. The polycapillary optics produced focal spots of 40 and 100 {micro}m. Beam intensities for the polycapillaries were, respective, 44 and 18 times the intensities found in straight 50-{micro}m and 100-{micro}m capillaries. High-sensitivity scanning will be possible because of the enhanced intensity of the polycapillary optic. LMES and the DP program will benefit from improved capabilities for nondestructive x-ray microanalysis, while XOS will benefit from test results that will enhance the marketability of their products.

Nonlinear optics in doped fibers. Final report, May 1, 1992--April 30, 1996 (open access)

Nonlinear optics in doped fibers. Final report, May 1, 1992--April 30, 1996

The main objective of this contract was to study a novel scheme to obtain very strong third-order optical nonlinearities in fibers doped with a suitable absorber in order to produce low-power all-optical fiber switches. In these devices, a signal is switched from a first fiber to a second fiber by the application of an optimal pump of wavelength different from that of the signal. The pump acts on the nonlinearity of the fiber, resulting from the dopant present in the fiber core, to modify the fiber index. The switch is made of a fiber interferometer which transforms this index modulation into an amplitude modulation. The signal is switched as long as the pump is applied, and it returns to the first fiber when the pump is turned off. The incentive was to develop switches exhibiting the following properties: (1) low switching power, (2) a short nonlinear fiber to be able to utilize a short and thus environmentally stable interferometer, (3) fast response time, (4) broad range of signal wavelengths, particularly around 1.55 and 1.32 {micro}m, (5) pump wavelengths readily available from diode lasers, and (6) low signal loss. This research also involved the study of various fiber interferometers to determine …

Tank 241-A-101, cores 154 and 156 analytical results for the 45 day report

This document is the 45-day laboratory report for tank 241 -A-101 push mode core segments collected between July II, 1996 and July 25, 1996. The segments were subsampled and analyzed in accordance with the Tank 241-A-101 Push Mode Core Sampling and Analysis Plan (TSAP) (Field, 1996) and the Safety Screening Data Quality Objective (DQO)(Dukelow, et al., 1995). The analytical results are included in the data summary table (Table 1). None of the samples submitted for Total Alpha Activity (AT) or Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analyses exceeded notification limits as stated in the Safety Screening DQO (Dukelow, et al., 1995). Statistical evaluation on results by calculating the 95% upper confidence limit is not performed by the 222-S Laboratory and is not considered in this report. Primary safety screening results and the raw data from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and DSC analyses are included in this report.
