The three methods presented include an autorotating-vane spoiler, a bellows flap, and free controls. All are based on modified airplane control systems.

Report presenting the results of an investigation to determine the effects of a small jet of air exhausting from the nose of an elliptical body of revolution upon boundary-layer transition and the viscous, pressure, and total drag of the forebody at three body stations at Mach number 1.62. The jet effects on body pressure, pressure variations, boundary-layer transition, and total drag are provided.

Abstract: "Tungsten-rich alloys, developed for use at temperatures up to 2000F, exhibit ductility, fabricability and joinability not found in commercially-available materials. An envelope type of microstructure was produced in compositions containing at least 90 wt% tungsten by liquid-phase sintering of cold-pressed powders in hydrogen. At room temperature the alloys could be rolled extensively, and tensile elongations up to 25% were noted. Strength properties of a W-Ni-Fe base were improved by small quaternary additions. The ultimate tensile strength of a 90W-4.8Ni-3.2Fe-2Ru alloy was 46,700 psi at 2000F, compared to 30,000 - 35,000 psi for unalloyed tungsten or W-Ni-Fe; the 100-hour stress-rupture strength at 1600F was 15,000 psi. Excellent joints were produced by spot welding and localized induction heating. The oxidation resistance of unprotected 90 wt% tungsten compositions was not significantly affected by alloying."

"Abstract: The advantages of storing nuclear pulse height information on tape for later use with an analyzer are pointed out. Experiments with a magnetic modulator playback head which would offset inaccuracies due to tape speed variation are described. (T.R.H.)."

During the spring 1952 atomic weapons tests a nationwide network of weather stations, supplemented by 16 foreign stations, collected samples of settled and airborne dust which were counted radiologically. The data are reported as bases for estimating possible health hazards.

Technical report outlining a method for the electrodeposition of adherent deposits of both aluminum and zirconium on uranium. Report finds that current efficiencies are good for aluminum deposition but low for the zirconium baths. [From Abstract]

Technical report describing the tests on types 309, 316, and 347 stainless steel. These steels were tested for a total of 779 to 828 hours in three different synthetic waste solutions. Results shoe that the best all-around corrosion resistance to the test conditions was exhibited by 316 stainless steel, but in one solution 347 stainless steel was more resistant. [From Abstract]

Technical report outlining the use of the Carbagel process in nuclear reactors, its technical feasibility, and case studies of the Carbagel process and its theoretical and technical use for reactors such as the Brookhaven National Laboratory reactor.

From introduction: "The tube arrangement covered in this report was proposed in June, 1950, as a means of halving the weight and volume required for the heat exchanger. Ideally, the pressure drop across this arrangement should be little more than that required to overcome the skin friction on the tube surfaces. If the pressure drop across the tube spacers and in the cross-flow regions can be kept low, this ideal can be approached. much of the test work covered in this report was devoted to this phase of the problem."

Technical report detailing kinetic equations that have been developed for a boiling-type reactor and inherent reactor stability studies that have been made on the basis of these equations. Presents features of the proposed reactor, comparisons of circulating types, investigations of bubble-rise velocities, effects of transient conditions of vapor mass in steam chest, and bubble time delay functions yield favorable results. Abstract: "A measurement was made of the dissociation of vibrationally-excited H2+ ions by photons having quantum energy in the vicinity of 4 e.v. The calculated cross section from theory is 3 x 10-(-18) cm-2. The experimental result is 10-(-17) cm-2; a factor of 10 uncertainty is present because the photon intensity was unknown by that factor."

Abstract: "The neutrons from the linear pinch in Berkeley have been shown to originate from deuteron collisions with a large net center-of-mass velocity in one direction along the axis of the pinch tube. The interpretation of this result is that the neutron production associated with the pinch is non-thermonuclear in origin. The object of this paper is to review the experimental evidence and discuss a possible source of the neutron production."

Many factors are responsible for the rapid growth of analytical chemistry during the past ten to fifteen years (This report was written in 1953). One of the most important of these factors is the greatly increased significance to present day chemistry of many elements that in the recent past were principally chemical curiosities. Since the Atomic Energy program is concerned with many such elements, it is of interest to discuss the cause for this concern and the resulting effect on the field of analytical chemistry. A number of pertinent analytical research problems at Hanford are cited as examples.
