This area was formerly treeless, and even along the stream courses, but now—from a distance—it has almost the aspect of a wooded country. Variations in continuity and vigor of the belts is chiefly due to differences in degree of care and protection afforded the plantings—the soils for the most part being well suited for the storage of moisture.
