Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "A new addition to the Oklahoma City Zoo was born over the weekend - a 6-foot, 125-pound baby giraffe. According to Lawrence Curtis, zoo director, it hasn't been determined yet whether the baby giraffe is a girl or a boy, because the mother won't let any of the zoo officials near the baby. The baby, which was born in the giraffe pin, is an "intergrate" - its mother is a reticulated giraffe and the father a Rothchilde's giraffe. The subspecles of reticulated giraffes is found mainly in southeast Africa. They are deep chestnut color and have a distinct blotches, Curtis said. Found in central Africa, the Rothchilde's giraffes are of a lighter sandy color with a network of less distinctive patterns. The new-born giraffe, according to Curtis, has the coloration and distinctive pattern of the mother, but in the center of the blotches it has a lighter spot which is the pattern of the father showing through. The mixture of the subspecies is not unusual, Curtis said. It occurs often in Africa where the regions merge."
