Good Soil Management Makes Strawberries
Photograph of Wilson DeGroot and wife packaging strawberries. Good soil management makes strawberries. Contour rows, fertilization and check-row cultivation has simplified labors. This "pick-em-yourself" four acre project grossed $1,600 in 1960. Over 2,000 people picked for home use according to DeGroot. This retired bricklayer says his hobby is interesting and profitable.

Photograph of charter member of the Board of Supervisors of the Valliant Soil Conservation District [SCD], William E. Clarkson. Mr. Clarkson pruned all the young pine on his ranch in the fall of 1959 and spring of 1960. It is estimated if all this pine were in one block it would be about 40 acres. Clarkson has shifted from row crops to cattle raising. His overall plan is to shift to tree farming. OK-969-9.
