It appears simultaneously on five different screens. Seven men watch closely - and provide an impromtu script to keep the show from becoming a tragedy. The darkened room is RAPCON, the Federal Aviation Administration's Radar Approach Control. The job of the men watching the radar screens is to keep the variety of planes, military, commercial and private, from getting in each other's air. This takes some doing, since at a given moment there may be up to 60 planes in a 20-mile radius of the rotating RAPCON radar. And there are well over a thousand aircraft "operations," either landings or takeoffs, at the various airports in the city area almost any day.....Starting June 29, RAPCON will start offering a new service, giving VFR planes, those flying on non-instrmental Visual Flight Rules, advice on air traffic around them and sequence for getting into the landing pattern at Will Rogers World Airport. It won't be mandatory the VFR planes contact the center, as it is for IFR craft, but RADCOM suggests in a bulletin …
