Correlation of alluvial deposits at the Nevada Test Site

Because characteristics of rock layers and problems in drilling must be studied before radioactive waste can be safely contained, an evaluation was made of methods for correlating alluvial deposits at Yucca Flat of the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Although correlation of Tertiary volcanic tuff beds at the NTS has been successfully achieved, correlation of stratigraphic zones in the overlying alluvium has posed technical difficulties. We have evaluated several methods for correlating alluvial deposits from drillholes, including electric resistivity logs (E logs), visual examination of sidewall samples and comparison of their carbonate (CO/sub 2/) content, downhole stereo photography for identifying debris flow deposits, caliche age-dating, and specific yield and permeability measurements of deposits. For predicting the thickness of zones having similar physical properties in the alluvium, E log measurements were found to be the most useful of these methods.

Engineering design solutions of flux swing with structural requirements for ohmic heating solenoids

Here a more detailed publication is summarized which presents analytical methods with solutions that describe the structural behavior of ohmic heating solenoids to achieve a better understanding of the relationships between the functional variables that can provide the basis for recommended design improvements. The solutions relate the requirements imposed by structural integrity to the need for producing sufficient flux swing to initiate a plasma current in the tokamak fusion machine. A method is provided to perform a detailed structural analysis of every conducting turn in the radial build of the solenoid, and computer programmed listings for the closed form solutions are made available as part of the reference document. Distinction is made in deriving separate models for the regions of the solenoid where turn-to-turn radial contact is maintained with radial compression or with a bond in the presence of radial tension, and also where there is turn-to-turn radial separation due to the absence or the loss of bonding in the presence of would be radial tension. The derivations follow the theory of elasticity for a body possessing cylindrical anisotropy where the material properties are different in the radial and tangential directions. Thermal design and analysis of superconductors for the toroidal field coils of TNS. [NbTi]

The toroidal field coils in two of the four TNS field coil design options are superconducting. NbTi superconductors are used in the low field design option and Nb/sub 3/Sn superconductors are used in the high field design option. The preliminary conceptual design parameters of the coils and the superconductors have been developed. The selected coil shape is the pure tension D-configuration. The superconductors are the multifilamentary, cabled design and are cooled by forced flow supercritical helium. Thermal stability analyses were performed for the superconductors. The cryogenic recovery capability of the NbTi superconductors is more than 10/sup 5/ J/m/sup 3/ of conductor plus helium volume and that of the Nb/sub 3/Sn is more than 3 x 10/sup 5/ j/m/sup 3/.

Spectra of matrix isolated metal atoms and clusters. [In rare gases]

The matrix isolation spectra of all of the 40 presently known atomic metal species show strong matrix effects. The transition energies are increased, and the bands are broad and exhibit splitting of sublevels which are degenerate in the gas phase. Several models have been proposed for splitting of levels, but basic effects are not yet understood, and spectra cannot be predicted, yet it is possible to correlate gas phase and matrix in many of the systems. Selective production of diatomics and clusters via thermal and optical annealing of atomic species can be monitored by optical spectra, but yields spectroscopically complex systems which, however, especially in the case of transition metals, can be used as precursors in novel chemical reactions. A combination of absorption, emission, ir, Raman, ESR, and other methods is now quickly yielding data which will help correlate the increasing wealth of existing data. 55 references, 6 figures.

Stable propagation of an electron beam in gas

Conditions for the stable propagation of a pinched electron beam in low pressure gas (p approximately 0.1 to 100 torr) are described. The observed window of good propagation around p approximately 2 torr air is interpreted as the quenching of the two-stream mode by sufficiently high plasma density and collision frequency, and the simultaneous suppression of the resistive hose mode by sufficiently rapid generation of electrical conductivity from breakdown ionization.

An intensive theoretical program was launched to try to understand the conditions for safe propagation of intense beam currents in focussing systems, such as continuous and interrupted solenoid lens systems, and quadrupole strong-focussing systems. Analytic methods have led to significant advances in understanding of the new problems; with computational techniques a large amount of new information has been generated on space-charge-dominated transport phenomena; also, at this time a new LBL particle numerical simulation code is almost ready to give new results. Because the Bevalac is an operating heavy ion linac and synchrotron facility with an ongoing R and D effort and in expectation of imminent upgrading to bring it up to a uranium-ion capability, it was a natural choice to make an addition to these activities to examine low-..beta.. rf accelerating structures and ion sources suitable for HIF. An experimental program on intense beam propagation was briefly discussed. (MOW)

Impurity and gas throughput control for TNS

A model of the interaction between an ignited plasma and a wall is utilized to study the impact of impurities and recycled fuel ions and helium ash on the burn time of the plasma. The model indicates that the impurity concentration, n/sub im/, grows exponentially toward a maximum value determined by the confinement time for impurities, tau/sub im/, the sputtering coefficient, S/sub i/, and the isolation coefficient, ..cap alpha... The time for n/sub im/ to reach a critical value and quench the plasma was determined for representative impurities, C, Mo, W, Fe, under various conditions of plasma temperature. Methods for extending the burn time by minimizing the effective sputtering coefficient of the wall and increasing the isolation of the plasma from the wall are reviewed. The carbides, B/sub 4/C and SiC, are found to have encouraging sputtering properties but their thermal, chemical and mechanical properties need to be evaluated before they can be recommended for use as first walls. The magnetic divertor is the preferred isolation scheme. Because the divertor carries impurities and leaked fuel and helium ions to a burial chamber, required pumping speeds are found to be very high for TNS plasmas and supplemental particle trapping systems must …

Analysis of options for a solar development bank. Task VI

Financial barriers which hinder the use and acceptance of solar technology in the building and industrial markets are identified. The barriers fall under three categories: risk, liquidity, and subsidy. Policy initiatives that can be used to overcome financing barriers which hinder the use of solar technology are briefly mentioned. These include direct lending programs operated by the government or by private banks and secondary financing organizations which provide liquidity and security to mortgage lenders. Policy options considered to accomplish the objectives of the initiatives and the evaluation of each option is presented. Options considered are: to modify existing governmental programs and institutions so that these institutions more effectively promote the use of solar energy; to create a new and separate institution to undertake a number of financing functions; and to create a direct federal loan program. The proposed functions of a Solar Development Bank are specifically examined. Information on functions and participants in the secondary mortgage market is discussed in the appendix. The text of a presidential speech on the technically feasible use of solar powered units is given. (MCW)

The objective of this research program is to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of producing solar-cell-quality sheet silicon by coating one surface of carbonized ceramic substrates with a thin layer of large-grain polycrystalline silicon from the melt. In the past year significant progress was made in all areas of the program. The physical and chemical properties of the standard mullite refractory used for the majority of the coating runs (McDanel MV20 and Coors S1SI) have been characterized. A number of experimental compositions have been identified and procured from Coors. Characterization of the standard compositions revealed that the thermal expansion of mullite depends on both relative amounts of glass phase and on the impurity level in the glass. Since the thermal expansion in mullite exceeds that of silicon, the silicon coating should be in a state of compression. This was confirmed by x-ray measurements. After modifying and cleaning the dip-coating facility, silicon on ceramic (SOC) solar cells were fabricated which demonstrate that the SOC process can produce silicon of solar cell quality. SOC cells having 1 cm/sup 2/ active areas demonstrated measured conversion efficiencies as high as 7.2 percent. Work during the period was devoted primarily to a range of analytical/numerical investigations, including evaluation of means to improve external blanket designs, beneficial attributes of the use of internal blankets, improved methods for the calculation of heterogeneous self-shielding and parametric studies of calculated spectral indices. Experimental work included measurements of the ratio of U-238 captures to U-235 fissions in a standard blanket mockup, and completion of development work on the radiophotoluminescent readout of LiF thermoluminescent detectors. The most significant findings were that there is very little prospect for substantial improvement in the breeding performance of external blankets, but internal blankets continue to show promise, particularly if they are used in such a way as to increase the volume fraction of fuel inside the core envelope. An improved equivalence theorem was developed which may allow use of fast reactor methods to calculate heterogeneously self-shielded cross sections in both fast and thermal reactors.

Electrical design of TNS

The electrical design of the ORNL-Westinghouse next step (TNS) fusion reactor was begun in 1976, using a set of ground rules which were based on the overall program objectives. These objectives were to identify the design of reasonably-priced reactors, which would achieve ignition and be technology forcing. The term ''technology forcing'' was understood to mean the desirability of a large number of ignited D-T pulses and the incorporation of superconducting toroidal field (TF) coils, if at all possible. A trade study methodology was developed to compare different machine sizes and TF coil technologies and to aid in the selection of system and subsystem design approaches. The logic which led from the program objectives to the design ground rules and from the ground rules to the circuit selection is described below. The circuit design approaches were generalized and these models were incorporated into a computer program (COAST) which was used to examine the cost of overall tokamak systems as key design parameters were varied.

Ion-exchange of mordenite-type zeolite with Mg/sup 2 +/ and La/sup 3 +/

Special techniques were tried for ion-exchanging Mg/sup 2 +/ and La/sup 3 +/ into mordenite, which is an acid-stable zeolite of possible catalytic value to the coal industry. Electron microprobe analysis showed that ion-exchange occurred only along the main channels of the 100 ..mu..m long needles. Complete exchange was not achieved, and exchange was always higher at the ends of the needles. The highest content of Mg/sup 2 +/ is 3.7 atoms per unit cell (with 0.2 Na and 1.0 K residual), and the highest content of La/sup 3 +/ is 1.7 atoms per unit cell (with 1.7 Na and 0.1 K residual). Higher ion-exchange should be achievable for smaller crystals, such as are commonly made synthetically, but such crystals would be too small for routine X-ray structure analysis. Detailed structural data are given for an Mg/sup 2 +/-exchanged crystal, but interpretation of the cation populations is equivocal. Suggestions are made for further work using (a) X-ray powder techniques and (b) X-ray single-crystal techniques based on a rotating-anode X-ray generator.

Scenarios are described which have been generated in support of the Hybrid Vehicle Potential Assessment Task under the JPL Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Systems Research and Development Project. The primary function of the scenario generation is to develop a set of consistent and credible forecasts required to estimate the potential impact of hybrid vehicles on future petroleum consumption in the USA, given a set of specific electric, hybrid and conventional vehicle designs. The forecasts are limited to the next 32 years (1978 to 2010. The four major areas of concern are: population and vehicle fleet size; travel patterns and vehicle fleet mix; conventional vehicle technology (Otto baseline); battery technology; and prices. The forecasts have been generated to reflect two baseline scenarios, a Petroleum Conservation Scenario (Scenario A) and an Energy Conservation Scenario (Scenario B). The primary assumption in Scenario A is higher gasoline prices than in Scenario B. This should result in less travel per car and an increased demand for smaller and more fuel efficient cars (compared to Scenario B). Computer code for the costing and sizing of TNS tokamaks

A FORTRAN code for the COsting And Sizing of Tokamaks (COAST) is described. The code was written to conduct detailed analyses on the engineering features of the next tokamak fusion device following TFTR. The ORNL/Westinghouse study of TNS (The Next Step) has involved the investigation of a number of device options, each over a wide range of plasma sizes. A generalized description of TNS is incorporated in the code and includes refined modeling of over forty systems and subsystems. Considerable detailed design and analyses have provided the basis for the thermal, electrical, mechanical, nuclear, chemical, vacuum, and facility engineering of the various subsystems. Currently, the code provides a tool for the systematic comparison of four toroidal field (TF) coil technologies allowing both D-shaped and circular coils. The coil technologies are: (1) copper (both room temperature and liquid-nitrogen cooled), (2) superconducting NbTi, (3) superconducting Nb/sub 3/Sn, and (4) a Cu/NbTi/ hybrid. For the poloidal field (PF) coil systems copper conductors are assumed. The objective of the program is to establish a basis for the prediction of radionuclide sorption in geologic environments. In FY 79, experimental and theoretical efforts were concentrated on a study of the sorption of cesium on the solid substrates Min-u-sil (quartz) and Belle Fourche clay (montmorillonite). Cesium sorption isotherms were obtained for the two substrates at 26/sup 0/C as a function of initial Cs concentration in solution (10/sup -3/M to 10/sup -9/M), pH (5 to 10) and supporting electrolyte concentration (0.002M, 0.01M, 0.1M, and 1M) NaCl and a simulated basalt groundwater in batch-type experiments using crushed material. Characterization of the solid phases included measurements of chemical compositions, particle sizes, surface areas, and cation-exchange capacities. In addition, potentiometric acid/base titrations of the solid phases were conducted in order to determine the acid dissociation and electrolyte exchange constants of the surfaces. Preliminary analysis of the sorption data indicate that while the clay data could be explained by simple mass-action expressions, the quartz data could not. Theoretical efforts were aimed at developing and testing an electrolyte binding electrical double-layer model to predict sorption isotherms.
