A Four Cell Lattice for the UCLA Compact Light Source Synchrotron (open access)

A Four Cell Lattice for the UCLA Compact Light Source Synchrotron

The 1.5 GeV compact light source UCS proposed for UCLA must fit into a shielded vault that is 9.144 meters (30 feet) wide. In order for the machine to fit into the allowable space, the ring circumference must be reduced 36 meters, the circumference of the six cell lattice, to something like 26 or 27 meters. The four cell lattice described in this report has a ring circumference of 27.0 meters.

What happened after the evaluation? (open access)

What happened after the evaluation?

An ergonomics program including a ergonomic computer workstation evaluations at a research and development facility was assessed three years after formal implementation. As part of the assessment, 53 employees who had been subjects of computer workstation evaluations were interviewed. The documented reports (ergonomic evaluation forms) of the ergonomic evaluations were used in the process of selecting the interview subjects. The evaluation forms also provided information about the aspects of the computer workstation that were discussed and recommended as part of the evaluation, although the amount of detail and completeness of the forms varied. Although the results were mixed and reflective of the multivariate psychosocial factors affecting employees working in a large organization, the findings led to recommendations for improvements of the program.

Dynamic Aperture Measurements at the Advanced Light Source (open access)

Dynamic Aperture Measurements at the Advanced Light Source

A large dynamic aperture for a storage ring is of importance for long lifetimes and a high injection efficiency. Measurements of the dynamic aperture of the third generation synchrotron light source Advanced Light Source (ALS) using beam excitation with kicker magnets are presented. The experiments were done for various accelerator conditions, allowing us to investigate the influence of different working points, chromaticities, insertion devices, etc.. The results are compared both with tracking calculations and a simple model for the dynamic aperture yielding good agreements. This gives us confidence in the predictability of the nonlinear accelerator model. This is especially important for future ALS upgrades as well as new storage ring designs.

Three dimensional Monte-Carlo modeling of laser-tissue interaction (open access)

Three dimensional Monte-Carlo modeling of laser-tissue interaction

A full three dimensional Monte-Carlo program was developed for analysis of the laser-tissue interactions. This project was performed as a part of the LATIS3D (3-D Laser-Tissue interaction) project. The accuracy was verified against results from a public domain two dimensional axisymmetric program. The code was used for simulation of light transport in simplified human knee geometry. Using the real human knee meshes which will be extracted from MRI images in the near future, a full analysis of dosimetry and surgical strategies for photodynamic therapy of rheumatoid arthritis will be followed.

Extension of the Application of the generalized pole representation to the treatment of resonance cross sections. (open access)

Extension of the Application of the generalized pole representation to the treatment of resonance cross sections.

One reliable and convenient way of processing the cross sections in the resolved energy region is by use of the generalized pole representation, whereby the Doppler-broadening calculation can be carried out rigorously using the analytical approach. So far, its applications have been limited to cases with resonance parameters specified by the Reich-Moore formalism. Although such an approach, in principle, can be extended to all three remaining representations of resolved resonance parameters specified by the ENDF data format, there is no computational tool for handling such a task at present. Given that Breit-Wigner formalisms are probably the most widely used by any evaluated nuclear data library to represent cross sections, a special effort has to be made to convert the single level and multilevel Breit-Wigner resonance parameters to pole parameters. A FORTRAN computer code BW2PR has been developed for this purpose. Extensive calculations have been performed to demonstrate that the proposed method ensures the conservation of the information contained originally in Breit-Wigner resonance parameters. This will make it possible to apply the exact Doppler-broadening method to a larger collection of nuclides.
