Fraunhofer Diffraction Pattern Produced by a Slit of Varying Width and its Application to High Speed Cameras (open access)

Fraunhofer Diffraction Pattern Produced by a Slit of Varying Width and its Application to High Speed Cameras

Abstract: "A theoretical and experimental investigation is made of the diffraction pattern produced by a slit, whose aperture varies uniformly from a constant value A to zero. The results of this investigation are applied to a proposed high speed camera. It is shown that diffraction effects are very serious and cannot be neglected. It seems, unless the suggested design of this high speed camera is changed, the camera will be of little use for accurate measurements, and photographs will show too much blue to give details."

Experiments on Polarization in Scatterig Deuterons from Complex Nuclei and in Proton-Proton Scattering (Thesis) (open access)

Experiments on Polarization in Scatterig Deuterons from Complex Nuclei and in Proton-Proton Scattering (Thesis)

Abstract: "The elastic double scattering of deuterons by complex nuclei has been investigated experimentally. Measurements were made on carbon, aluminum, and copper at around 157 Mev; on lithium, beryllium, and carbon at around 125 Mev; and on carbon and aluminum at 94 Mev. The expected tensor components of the deuteron polarization have not been observed. Measurements have been made of the differential cross section and vector-type polarization as a function of angle for the scattering of deuterons from the above elements, at the above energies. The observed polarizations were larger than would be expected on the basis of the individual nucleon-nucleus interactions. In a second experiment we measured the 169-Mev proton-proton polarization at 10, 15, 22.5, 30, and 35 in the laboratory system. The results indicate that partial waves up to and including L = 3 are important at this energy."

Abstract: This report presents the results of a study performed by the Ford Instrument Company, Division of Sperry Rand Corporation, and its subcontractor, Maryland Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, for the Maritime Administration, U. S. Department of Commerce, under terms of Study Contract No. MA-1893, dated March 11, 1959. The purpose of this study is to evaluate various techniques for pretesting and installing nuclear prototype power plants in merchant ships and develop that technique offering the widest general application using time, cost and safety as essential criteria. Acknowledgement is made for the valuable counsel received from personnel of the American Bureau of Shipping, Isbrandtsen Company, Inc., Maritime Administration, Atomic Energy Commission, and the United States Coast Guard.

The Distribution of Uranium-Vanadium Deposits in the Colorado Plateau Relative to Tertiary Intrusive Masses (open access)

The Distribution of Uranium-Vanadium Deposits in the Colorado Plateau Relative to Tertiary Intrusive Masses

Introduction: Studies of uranium-vanadium occurrences in the Four Corners region show that, with the exception of the Lukachuai area, all of the major deposits in the Morrison formation are grouped around the various igneous masses which are scattered irregularly throughout the Colorado Plateau. The pattern of deposition varies from mountain group to mountain group and each will be described separately. Maps accompany this report to supplement the descriptions of ore occurrences in the vicinity of the La Sal, Abajo, Carrizo, and Henry mountains. Elsewhere, it is believed that a written description will suffice.

Column Adsorption Methods in Analytical Chemistry (open access)

Column Adsorption Methods in Analytical Chemistry

Technical report. Numerous application of various column adsorption techniques to inorganic analytical chemistry have appear in the literature. The comparatively recent introduction of ion exchange resins has resulted in the development of efficient, simple, and rapid column adsorption methods. the principal service of column adsorption methods to analytical chemistry is that of providing a relatively simple means of separating an element in a sufficiently pure state so that a direct precipitation, ignition, and weighting, for example, will suffice to complete the quantitative analysis. Systems involving uranyl nitrate will naturally be emphasized in this report but information will be included concerning the separation of the individual members of a series from one another, such as in the alkaline earths and the rare earths.

The Slow Neutron Transmission of Be Metal as Measured by a Neutron Beam Spectrometer in the Energy Region 0.004 eV to 50 eV (open access)

The Slow Neutron Transmission of Be Metal as Measured by a Neutron Beam Spectrometer in the Energy Region 0.004 eV to 50 eV

Abstract. Slow neutron transmission measurements as a function of the time of flight of the incident neutron have been made for three different thicknesses of Beryllium. The energy region from 0.004 eV to 50 eV was investigated using the Columbia neutron beam spectrometer system. Particular emphasis was placed on the very low energy region (from 0.004 eV tp 0/2 eV or from 0.6 to 5 [length]) where pronounced crystal interference effects were observed. The effective slow neutron cross section (in the unity of X 10(-24)ce(2)atom) for several different energy values were: 6.1 at 0.2 [length], 3.5 at 1.5 [length], 2.3 at 2.5 [length] and 0.6 at 4.6 [length]. The positions of the discontinuities in the cross section agree fairly well with the values obtained from the X-ray measurements.
