Pressure fluctuations as a diagnostic tool for fluidized beds. [Quarterly] technical progress report, January 1, 1995--March 31, 1995 (open access)

Pressure fluctuations as a diagnostic tool for fluidized beds. [Quarterly] technical progress report, January 1, 1995--March 31, 1995

A series of preliminary experiments were conducted at the Iowa State University power plant circulating fluidized bed boiler (CFB). Pressure fluctuation measurements were recorded from a pressure transducer located immediately above the primary air distributor at the base of the CFB boiler under normal operating conditions. The purpose of these initial experiments was to examine the general pressure fluctuation structure of the fluidized bed boiler in order to assess what further signal processing techniques may be necessary for valid pressure fluctuation analysis and analytical characterization. These initial results show that the CFB boiler pressure fluctuations obtained are highly periodic. Due to the dominance of this periodic component (and its subsequent harmonics), the Bode plots of these pressure fluctuation signals are difficult to interpret. While an overall system roll-off is apparent, neither the overall system order nor the system time constants can be adequately estimated from this initial data. Further data recorded from other locations in the CFB boiler should provide a more complete explanation of the nature of boiler pressure fluctuations. This initial experimentation suggests that a better description of pressure fluctuations could be attained using signal filtering techniques. Numerous experiments were also completed using the 2.0 inch diameter cold-model …

Quasi-elastic neutron scattering studies of protein dynamics. Final report, November 1, 1991--March 31, 1995 (open access)

Quasi-elastic neutron scattering studies of protein dynamics. Final report, November 1, 1991--March 31, 1995

Proteins are formed from long polymer chains of amino acids that have been cross linked into a complex three dimensional structure. The structure is not unique, since there are many conformation substates of nearly equal energy, separated by small energy barriers, that are obtained by slight shifts in positions of various segments of the molecule. Transitions among these conformations substates are of a diffusive nature, and they can lead to substantial changes in the shape of the molecule. These changes in shape are important for the biological reactions in the cell. Such diffusive motion is inaccessible to the diffraction methods or to the computer simulations, since it occurs on a long time scale. It is accessible to incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QNS) studies, which permit a direct determination of the properties of the diffusive motion of the protons in the molecules. The authors have used the IQNS method to study the motions of the side chains in trypsin, a protein of beta-sheet structures and myoglobin, a protein of {alpha}-helical structures, at various D{sub 2}O hydration levels.

PUREX Plant waste analysis plan. Revision 2 (open access)

PUREX Plant waste analysis plan. Revision 2

A Washington Administrative Code 173-303-300 requires that a facility develop and follow a written waste analysis plan which describes the procedures that will be followed to ensure that its dangerous wastes are managed properly. This document covers the activities at the PUREX Plant to characterize the designate waste that is generated within the plant, stored in Tanks F18, U3/U4, and managed through elementary neutralization in Tank 31.

Project Management Support and Services for the Environmental Restoration and Waste Management. Final report (open access)

Project Management Support and Services for the Environmental Restoration and Waste Management. Final report

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Environmental Restoration Technical Support Office (ERTSO) contracted Project Time & Cost, Inc. (PT&C) on 16 November 1992 to provide support services to the US Department of Energy (DOE). ERTSO had traditionally supported the DOE Albuquerque office in the Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Programs and had also supported the Office of Waste Management (EM-30) at DOE Headquarters in Germantown, Maryland. PT&C was requested to provide project management and support services for the DOE as well as liaison and coordination of responses and efforts between various agencies. The primary objective of this work was to continue LANL`s technical support role to EM-30 and assist in the development of the COE Cost and Schedule Estimating (CASE) Guide for EM-30. PT&C`s objectives, as specified in Section B of the contract, were well met during the duration of the project through the review and comment of various draft documents, trips to DOE sites providing program management support and participating in the training for the EM-30 Cost and Schedule Estimating Guide, drafting memos and scheduling future projects, attending numerous meetings with LANL, DOE and other subcontractors, and providing written observations and recommendations.he results obtained were determined to be satisfactory …

Relevance of the U.S. National Ignition Facility for driver and target options to next-step inertial fusion test facilities (open access)

Relevance of the U.S. National Ignition Facility for driver and target options to next-step inertial fusion test facilities

Achievement of inertial fusion ignition and energy gain in the proposed U.S. National Ignition Facility is a prerequisite for decisions to build next-step U.S. inertial fusion facilities for either high yield or high pulse-rate. There are a variety of target and driver options for such next-step inertial fusion test facilities, and this paper discusses possible ways that the NIF, using a 1.8 MJ glass laser in both direct and indirect-drive configurations, can provide target physics data relevant to several next-step facility options. Next step facility options include the Engineering Test Facility (ETF), which needs several-Hz pulse-rates for testing relevant to Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) development. An option for high yield, called the Laboratory Microfusion Facility (LMF), does not require such high pulse-rates, but may still benefit from driver technologies capable of much higher shot rates than possible with glass lasers. A high-pulse-rate driver could also be used for a combined ETF/LMF facility, driving multiple target chambers with a common driver. Driver technologies that could support high-pulse rates for next-step options include heavy-ion and light-ion accelerators, diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSSL), and krypton-flouride gas lasers. The NIF could be used to provide important data for IFE in generic areas of target chamber …
