Ms. Moynihan-McCoy discusses her personal history in higher education.

Luis Cano was born in Corpus Christi, TX. After attending University of North Texas, he came to Houston and would become involved in the Mexican American Youth Organization and La Raza Unida Party. As a teacher at Austin High School, he would develop one of the first Mexican American courses. This experience along with his awareness of his family's political history would lead him to dedicate his life to education efforts. Cano talks the Huelga School Movement, a false pairing plan that placed Mexican American and African American youth together and called it integration. He also speaks about co-founding the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans and developing some of its cultural and youth-oriented initiatives, including teatro, a library, a school for at-risk students, and gang prevention. Cano describes his experiences as one of the first lecturers for the UH Center for Mexcian American Studies.

In the first part of his interview, Mr. Bernal talks about his experiences growing up in the west side of San Antonio. He talks about living conditions and the different jobs he had as a young man to help his household. He also discussed the conditions in the area schools, and the way Mexican American youth were steered toward trades instead of going to college. He also talks about his experience in the military; he was sent to the Philippines and Japan. Upon returning to the U.S., Mr. Bernal attended Trinity U., and later became a school teacher. Maria Anita Carmona Harrison was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas. She grew up in the city’s Guadalupe neighborhood, and she attended an all “Mexican” school before entering integrated schools in Lubbock. After graduating from Lubbock High School, Carmona Harrison earned a degree in elementary education from Texas Tech University —becoming the first Chicana educated entirely in Lubbock public schools to graduate from the university. She taught in several Lubbock schools.

Susana talks about growing up in East Austin, residential segregation in E. Austin, environmental justice/racism, black-brown relations, etc.

David Willard is an educator in Beaumont, Texas. In his interview, he discussed his father's work and legacy in the desegregation process in southeast Texas, his own work in civil rights and education, and the ongoing struggles of the black community in the region.

In his interview, Sterling discusses his family background, living under Jim Crow segregation, segregated neighborhoods and housing, agricultural work, military service and his experience being one of the first African-American students to attend Texas A&M University.

Interview with Lorena Andrade, civil rights and labor activist from El Paso, Texas. Ms. Andrade was born in Los Angeles, California and attended the University of Minnesota, where she became involved with Chicano activism. In El Paso, she has been an advocate for labor and founded the organization La Mujer Obrera, The Working Woman, to support women affected by NAFTA.

Elaine Jones is an educator and activist from Robstown. In her interview, Ms. Jones discussed her career as a teacher and her involvement in Robstown walkouts in 1969.

Interview with James E. Johnson, a retired professor of education from Prairie View, Texas. Johnson earned a doctorate from Texas A&M in 1967 and taught at Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern University. In his interview, he discusses his early life, military service, attending Texas A&M, racial integration, and his career as an educator.

Interview with Al Saenz, a city councilman from Bryan, Texas. In the interview, Saenz discusses his family background, civil rights organizations and the Mexican-American community in Bryan. Saenz also discusses time living in Houston during his childhood.

Macario Ramirez was born in 1937 in San Antonio. His family were migrant farm workers and traveled to the Midwest every year. He was in the military from 1956-59. Upon his return from the war, he gets involved in War on Poverty programs. Mr. Ramirez worked in Labor Training Programs in San Antonio, which eventually leads him to move to D.C. and work with a Man Power Training Program through the Department of Labor. He arrives in Houston and founded Casa Ramirez, a space that celebrate and provides culture and folklore to the Mexican American community of Houston.

Luciano "Lucky" Salinas was born in 1950 in Galveston. During the segregation era of the island, Salinas the attended Mexican American Goliad Elementary School. By the time he was in tenth grade, he would attended the integrated Ball High School. Due to a lack of college funding, Salinas opted to enlist in the Vietnam War. After serving in the war, he would attend Laredo Community College briefly before enrolling at the University of Houston. While at UH, Salinas became involved in student activism and took the first classes offered by the Center for Mexican American Studies. He talks about his involvement in the UH Mexican American Youth Organization, the various Mexican American student groups on campus, what he learned in the CMAS courses and how they shaped his worldview, his involvement in the Association for the Mexican American Advancement, and how he has dedicated his life to education endeavors.

Interview with Jaspyr Sanford of Huntsville, Texas. In her interview, she describes her early life and education, experiences with desegregation, racial issues in East Texas, civil rights activism, her work as a librarian at Sam Houston State University. Much of her interview focuses on integration at Texas state universities.

Interview with Rogelio Nuñez, executive director of legal defense and advocacy organization Proyecto Libertad from Harlingen, Texas. In the interview, Nuñez discusses his early life and education, Chicano activism, and Proyecto Libertad.

Alfredo Santos was born in southern California; after spending the first years of his life attending schools there, he moved to Uvalde and started attending schools there. While he had some awareness of disparities and the strains in relations between Anglos and Mexican Americans, he became politicized while attending high school. He joined the local chapter of MAYO, led by Amaro Cardona and Rogelio Muñoz, and was involved in their early direct action activities, including protests against police brutality and their efforts to instill ethnic pride among Mexican American students. While he was no longer attending school, he supported the 1970 walkout. Santos later moved to California and went to college there, majoring in economics at UCLA. While in California, his activism turned to farm workers' struggle (and in the interview he suggested this was his main interest). The next decades, Santos worked in a variety of jobs in different places; upon returning to Texas, he created a network of bilingual publications named La Voz -- one of which was based in Uvalde. Santos currently runs La Voz in Austin and is highly involved in Chicano politics across Texas.

Agustin Loredo was born in Baytown, Texas in 1974 and comes from a family with long ties to the area. In the 1930s, several family members, including his father, were repatriated even though they were U.S. citizens. Loredo grew up with stories (that he later researched as a college student at UH) about the vibrant Mexican American community in Baytown, including stories of fiestas patrias and Guadalupe Church, the hub for the community. In 1996, he attended the University of Houston, where he enrolled in courses taught by the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS). These courses sparked his interest in the culture, history, and eventually encouraged his community involvement. After he spent some time in Austin, he returned to Baytown in the early 2000s. After the Luis Alfonso Torres police incident in 2002, Loredo met Fred Aguilar, and became involved in the marches and protests that followed. Loredo witnessed the coalition of African Americans and Latinos to help the youth of Baytown. He then became a member of the West Baytown Homeowners Association and a board member for the Promise Center (led by Aguilar). Lorraine Perryman was born in Pampa, Texas in 1953, but her family eventually settled in Odessa, Texas. She grew up as a liberal in conservative Odessa as a way to contradict her father, who was a staunch Republican conservative. After high school, she attended the University of Texas at Austin. She came back to Odessa in 1979 to became the heed of communications of Ector County ISD while it went through desegregation. Afterwards, she started her own public relations business and briefly became a news anchor. In the 1980s, Perryman ran for mayor of Odessa but lost. She ran again and became the first female and youngest mayor of Odessa in 1990. Under her tenure, the Odessa City Council voted in single member districts that allowed for better representation for people of color in the city. Perryman has since helped start a rape crises center and battered women’s shelter in Odessa and has worked for nonprofits to better the city’s schools.
