Weathering characteristics of potential solar reflector materials: a survey of the literature (open access)

Weathering characteristics of potential solar reflector materials: a survey of the literature

A review of the available literature on the weatherability/durability of materials with possible applications in solar reflectors is summarized. A number of techniques used to weather solar materials are reviewed. These include both natural and simulated weathering. Little correlation has been shown to exist between natural and accelerated weathering, and much work needs to be done before results of accelerated aging tests can be used with confidence to predict material lifetimes under outdoors exposure conditions. Some of the techniques used to measure or monitor material degradation are discussed. Emphasis in the literature has been placed chiefly on mechanical properties or appearance oriented measurements. The need is apparent for more detailed optical measurements of materials properties that are directly useful in engineering design. Although a great deal of literature is available on the materials described in the survey, there is very little solid data on the properties important for solar applications. A brief discussion of some of the applicable data on polymeric materials and glass is presented and referenced. The importance of cleaning solar materials is emphasized and some attempts at modeling degradation are discussed.

Cladding of pressure vessel steels for coal conversion applications: a literature review (open access)

Cladding of pressure vessel steels for coal conversion applications: a literature review

The available literature is reviewed concerning corrosion-resistant lining of large ferritic steel vessels and piping, applicable to coal gasification and liquefaction systems. Potential ferritic steel pressure vessel and piping materials are discussed along with potential stainless steel and nickel-base cladding materials. The various lining techniques currently used in the United States and abroad are also reviewed, with advantages and disadvantages of each. Materials problems with the various techniques are described. Several methods are available to produce ferritic steel components lined with corrosion-resistant layers. For low-temperature-low-thermal cycling applications, applied linings may be a good choice. However, for more critical applications, integral cladding is generally preferred. Integral cladding may be performed by a variety of methods, including solid state cladding, braze-bond cladding, and weld overlay (fusion) cladding. The lining process should be chosen after careful consideration of base metals and cladding metals desired and of the service requirements for the lined component.

Review of the literature on leachates from coal storage piles (open access)

Review of the literature on leachates from coal storage piles

Runoff from coal storage piles associated with coal conversion or combustion facilities may represent a potential source of environmental pollution. This report is an assessment of existing information on coal pile leachate. The assessment indicates that few detailed studies have been conducted to date, and these are limited and the results are highly variable. More detailed long-range studies using various types of coal are recommended. These studies should be carried out both in the laboratory and in field-scale experiments.

A Comparison of Three Techniques of Teaching Literature: Silent Reading, Readers Theatre and Video-Tape Readers Theatre (open access)

A Comparison of Three Techniques of Teaching Literature: Silent Reading, Readers Theatre and Video-Tape Readers Theatre

The problem of this study was a comparison of the responses of students to three techniques of teaching literature. From this comparison, the most effective technique of teaching literature was identified. The three techniques selected for the study were silent reading, Readers Theatre, and videotape Readers Theatre. These three techniques were compared on achievement and attitude response. Effectiveness of each technique was examined by noting each grade level and the pooled-technique effectiveness scores. Also, black and white video-tape scores were examined in comparison to scores from the presentation of color video-tape. The analysis of data revealed that Readers Theatre resulted in significantly higher mean scores on attitude-scale tests than either of the other two techniques. The teaching technique of silent reading produced significantly higher mean comprehension scores than did either Readers Theatre or black and white video-tape, although Readers Theatre resulted in higher mean comprehension scores than did black and white video-tape. Silent reading produced a higher mean score than did black and white video-tape on the attitude-scale tests. Since silent reading produced significantly higher scores on comprehension of literature, it was concluded that silent reading is the most effective method for achieving comprehension. However, it was also concluded that …

A Study of the Developmental Problems of an Educational Counseling and Information Brokering Center for Adults (open access)

A Study of the Developmental Problems of an Educational Counseling and Information Brokering Center for Adults

The purposes of this study were to identify the problems and issues encountered in the development of an educational information and counseling brokering service for adults and to determine their relative significance to the success of an educational brokering service. To accomplish this, the relevant developmental issues were identified by a search of the literature. These were sent to a consultant of the National Center for Educational Brokering who selected forty issues and problems as salient. These statements were formulated into a questionnaire to determine their significance in each stage of development. The initial questionnaire was submitted to four additional consultants for recommendations. The questionnaires were then mailed to the directors of 135 educational brokering centers listed in the Directory of the National Center for Educational Brokering. Based on the findings of the study, eleven issues were considered very significant by the total population of respondents. The three most significant issues were: flexibility and responsiveness in service, maintaining clarity of purpose while attempting to meet diverse needs, and insuring continuing financial viability.
