Systems analysis guide for the rare-earth information center's information retrieval system (RICIRS)

The Rare-Earth Information Center Information Retrieval System (RICIRS) is a system of programs written in PL/1 and compiled by the PL/I optimizing compiler for an IBM 360-370 environment. It is a keyword-based retrospective information retrieval system. Conference papers, journal articles, books, and other bibliographic material are abstracted by the Rare-Earth Information Center personnel and placed in the data base. This report details the programs and their operation with respect to the files built by the Rare-Earth Information Center personnel. It is intended to be a guide for a programmer-analyst to maintaining and upgrading the system.

Guide to radioactive waste management literature (open access)

Guide to radioactive waste management literature

Increased public concern about radioactive waste management has called attention to this aspect of the nuclear fuel cycle. Socio-economic planning and technical development are being undertaken to assure that such wastes will be managed safely. This Guide to Radioactive Waste Management Literature has been compiled to serve scientists, engineers, administrators, legislators, and private citizens by directing them to sources of information on various aspects of the subject. References were selected from about 6000 documents on waste management in the computerized information centers in Oak Ridge. The documents were selected, examined, indexed, and abstracted between 1966-1976 by several knowledgeable indexers, principally at the Nuclear Safety Information Center. The selected references were further indexed and classified into 12 categories. Each category is discussed in enough detail to give some understandng of present technology in various phases of waste management and some appreciation of the attendant issues and problems. The bibliographic part of this guide exists in computerized form in the Health Physics Information System and is available through the Oak Ridge Information Center Complex for searching from remote terminals.

Systems study for initial development of a laboratory records information system (open access)

Systems study for initial development of a laboratory records information system

The major impetus for a system study of the ORNL Laboratory Records Department (LRD) was the ORNL-3300, a computer listing of all ORNL reports, papers, and oral presentations. Although this file has been maintained by the Information Division Libraries Department (LD) for several years, the usability of the file is somewhat limited, and duplicative steps appear to be involved in generation of the file. In order to examine procedures involved in generating the ORNL-3300, along with other Library Department and Laboratory Records Department procedures, various Information Division personnel were interviewed and the LRD Procedures Manual was reviewed. The existing LRD and LD procedures surrounding the ORNL-3300 were examined closely with the intent of developing an LRD computer data base from which the ORNL-3300 would be a by-product and which would eliminate duplicative manual procedures whenever possible. Integrating the ORNL-3300 into a computer data base system would allow Boolean logic searches on the 3300 data not possible with the present system. No attempt was made to examine ORNL-3300 facsimile data bases maintained by various divisions, although several are known to exist. Although addressing the ORNL-3300 is the major thrust of this paper, development of computer data bases for foreign visitors and …

Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics Division annual report, January 1--December 31, 1976 (open access)

Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics Division annual report, January 1--December 31, 1976

This annual report of the Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics Division describes the scientific research and other work carried out within the Division during the calendar year 1976. The Division is concerned with work in experimental and theoretical physics, with computer science and applied mathematics, and with the operation of a computer center. The major physics research activity is in high-energy physics; a vigorous program is maintained in this pioneering field. The high-energy physics research program in the Division now focuses on experiments with e/sup +/e/sup -/ colliding beams using advanced techniques and developments initiated and perfected at the Laboratory. The Division continues its work in medium energy physics, with experimental work carried out at the Bevatron and at the Los Alamos Pi-Meson Facility. Work in computer science and applied mathematics includes construction of data bases, computer graphics, computational physics and data analysis, mathematical modeling, and mathematical analysis of differential and integral equations resulting from physical problems. The computer center serves the Laboratory by constantly upgrading its facility and by providing day-to-day service. This report is descriptive in nature; references to detailed publications are given. (RWR)

The RICIRS system is a key word-based retrieval system capable of retrieving bibliographic information from a direct-access device. The biblographic information is compiled by the Rare-Earth Information Center (RIC) by careful inspection and key word extraction of the documents. This report describes the constructing of retrieval requests and the updating of the data bases for this information retrieval system. The system is written for an IBM 360-370 OSMVT environment. It is written in PL/I optimized codes. 4 figures.

LMFBR safety. 3. Review of current issues and bibliography of literature (1972--1974)

The report discusses the current status of liquid-metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) development and one of the principal safety issues, a hypothetical core-disruptive accident (HCDA). Bibliographic information on worldwide LMFBRs relative to the development of the breeder reactor as a safe source of nuclear power is presented for the period 1972 through 1974. The bibliography consists of approximately 1380 abstracts covering research and development and operating experiences leading up to the present design practices that are necessary for the licensing of breeder reactors. Key-word, author, and permuted-title indexes are included.

This annual report of the Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics Division describes the scientific research and other work carried out within the Division during 1977. The Division is concerned with work in experimental and theoretical physics, with computer science and applied mathematics, and with the operation of a computer center. The major physics research activity is in high-energy physics, although there is a relatively small program of medium-energy research. The High Energy Physics research program in the Physics Division is concerned with fundamental research which will enable man to comprehend the nature of the physical world. The major effort is now directed toward experiments with positron-electron colliding beam at PEP. The Medium Energy Physics program is concerned with research using mesons and nucleons to probe the properties of matter. This research is concerned with the study of nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, and the interactions between nuclei and electromagnetic radiation and mesons. The Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Department engages in research in a variety of computer science and mathematics disciplines. Work in computer science and applied mathematics includes construction of data bases, computer graphics, computational physics and data analysis, mathematical modeling, and mathematical analysis of differential and integral equations resulting …

Films in the Library: A General Catalog with Film and Broadcasting Filmography of North Texas State University Library Films

The purpose of the study was to compile a catalog of two sections: (1) a comprehensive, alphabetic, annotated list of North Texas State University (NTSU) Library films (the general catalog); and (2) a classified and cross-referenced film and broadcasting filmography of NTSU Library films. The catalog represents all films available for distribution from the NTSU Library as of July, 1976. The cataloging and compilation process is described. An analysis is made of the NTSU Library film collection. The titles of 13 films are recommended for addition to the collection.

Existentialism and Darwinism in The French Lieutenant's Woman (open access)

Existentialism and Darwinism in The French Lieutenant's Woman

Existentialism and Darwinism provide a means of viewing the development of personal freedom in a young English gentleman, Charles Smithson. Guided by Sarah Woodruff, a social outcast, Charles approaches freedom through the existential conditions of terror, anguish, and despair; he encounters alienation, human finitude, and the loss of a relationship with God on the way. The realization of his trapped state is aided by the Darwinian analogy present in the novel: the monied leisure class to which Charles belongs is presented as the species approaching extinction because it fails to make the changes necessary to survive changed conditions. The novel's two endings combine existential and Darwinian elements to present to Charles the choice that can help him escape his trapped state and gain freedom.
