Physics History Books in the Fermilab Library

Fermilab is a basic research high-energy physics laboratory operated by Universities Research Association, Inc. under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy. Fermilab researchers utilize the Tevatron particle accelerator (currently the world�s most powerful accelerator) to better understand subatomic particles as they exist now and as they existed near the birth of the universe. A collection review of the Fermilab Library monographs was conducted during the summers of 1998 and 1999. While some items were identified for deselection, the review proved most fruitful in highlighting some of the strengths of the Fermilab monograph collection. One of these strengths is history of physics, including biographies and astrophysics. A bibliography of the physics history books in the collection as of Summer, 1999 follows, arranged by author. Note that the call numbers are Library of Congress classification.

Final report: Efficient and user friendly C++ library for differential algebra

In Phase I we proposed the following tasks: Task 1: Identify the units of the Differential Algebra (DA) library, i.e. determine the abstract data types of the DA and the relations between them. Develop the interfaces (.h files) for the DA vectors. Task 2: Implement the DA vector class with garbage collection and expression templates for optimizing all overloaded operators by minimizing creation of temporaries and fusing loops. Task 3: Implement the prototype GUI for instantiating systems from files and invoking the DA methods. Task 4: Develop a suite of tests for the DA vector class and the needed utilities classes. Task 5: Write the final report on this work. This will include documentation on the use of the code. We have completed these tasks. In this section we discuss the results of our work.

Navigating nuclear science: Enhancing analysis through visualization

Data visualization is an emerging technology with high potential for addressing the information overload problem. This project extends the data visualization work of the Navigating Science project by coupling it with more traditional information retrieval methods. A citation-derived landscape was augmented with documents using a text-based similarity measure to show viability of extension into datasets where citation lists do not exist. Landscapes, showing hills where clusters of similar documents occur, can be navigated, manipulated and queried in this environment. The capabilities of this tool provide users with an intuitive explore-by-navigation method not currently available in today`s retrieval systems.

Nontechnical Barriers to Solar Energy Use: Review of Recent Literature

This paper reviews the nontechnical barriers to solar energy use, drawing on recent literature to help identify key barriers that must be addressed as part of the Technology Acceptance efforts under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar America Initiative. A broad literature search yielded more than 400 references, which were narrowed to 19 recent documents on nontechnical barriers to the use of solar energy and other energy efficiency and renewable energy (EE/RE) technologies. Some of the most frequently identified barriers included lack of government policy supporting EE/RE, lack of information dissemination and consumer awareness about energy and EE/RE, high cost of solar and other EE/RE technologies compared with conventional energy, and inadequate financing options for EE/RE projects.

A study of the Teachers` Academy for Mathematics and Science

The Teachers` Academy for Mathematics and Science in Chicago (TAMS) is a freestanding institution founded in 1989 by scientists and a variety of other stakeholders, to advance the systemic reform of mathematics and science education in Chicago`s public schools. It focuses on the ``re-tooling`` of its elementary level teachers. The TAMS program, which has been funded in part by the DOE, contributes to strategic goals two through five of the Office of University and Science Education (OUSE). This evaluation of TAMS by the National Center for Improving Science Education is primarily a qualitative study that summarizes the history and current status of the organization and its programs. Data was obtained through extensive interviews, observations, and document review, using a framework of templates to guide data collection and analyses. The findings are organized around a series of lessons learned from the first three years of TAMS and conclusions about its current status.

Sorted output resulting from flexible BOOLEAN searches can be printed or saved in files which can be inserted in reference lists for use with word processors.

Iron and nickel carbonyl formation in steel pipes and its prevention: literature survey

Data were compiled on the stability and formation rates of iron and nickel carbonyls. The data demonstrate that carbonyl formation in steel pipes is governed largely by kinetics. The rate of carbonyl formation is a function of several factors: temperature, pressure, gas flow rate, gas composition, impurities in the gas, alloy composition, surface conditions, and pretreatment of the surfaces. An evaluation of techniques for detecting iron and nickel carbonyls in gases showed atomic absorption spectroscopy to be a highly effective (approximately 1 ppB), almost instantaneous analytical technique. Carbonyl formation in pipe steels seems to be prevented mainly by the use of steels with high chromium contents, by lining the tubing with copper, or by use of any stable coating that prevents the carbon monoxide from directly contacting the metal. 23 references

Weathering characteristics of potential solar reflector materials: a survey of the literature

A review of the available literature on the weatherability/durability of materials with possible applications in solar reflectors is summarized. A number of techniques used to weather solar materials are reviewed. These include both natural and simulated weathering. Little correlation has been shown to exist between natural and accelerated weathering, and much work needs to be done before results of accelerated aging tests can be used with confidence to predict material lifetimes under outdoors exposure conditions. Some of the techniques used to measure or monitor material degradation are discussed. Emphasis in the literature has been placed chiefly on mechanical properties or appearance oriented measurements. The need is apparent for more detailed optical measurements of materials properties that are directly useful in engineering design. Although a great deal of literature is available on the materials described in the survey, there is very little solid data on the properties important for solar applications. A brief discussion of some of the applicable data on polymeric materials and glass is presented and referenced. The importance of cleaning solar materials is emphasized and some attempts at modeling degradation are discussed.

Technology in education: A guidebook for developing a science and math education support program

Education is vital to survival and success in an increasingly technical world, and the quality of education is the responsibility of everyone students, teachers, parents, industry, and government. Any technical organization wanting to contribute to that success through its local education system can do so easily and effectively through careful planning. This report details that planning process and includes methods to (1) identify the interests, strengths, and resources of the technical organization; (2) identify the needs of the local education system; (3) interface with local school system administration, principals, and teachers; and (4) develop a unique plan to match the organization`s strengths and resources with the needs of the school system. Following these ``getting started`` activities is the actual program that the Engineering Technology Division implemented in a local elementary school, including the curriculum, topics, and actual lesson plans used by technical personnel in the classroom. Finally, there are enrichment activities for teachers and students, suggestions for measuring the success of an education support program, and an overview of student responses to questions about the overall program.

Cladding of pressure vessel steels for coal conversion applications: a literature review

The available literature is reviewed concerning corrosion-resistant lining of large ferritic steel vessels and piping, applicable to coal gasification and liquefaction systems. Potential ferritic steel pressure vessel and piping materials are discussed along with potential stainless steel and nickel-base cladding materials. The various lining techniques currently used in the United States and abroad are also reviewed, with advantages and disadvantages of each. Materials problems with the various techniques are described. Several methods are available to produce ferritic steel components lined with corrosion-resistant layers. For low-temperature-low-thermal cycling applications, applied linings may be a good choice. However, for more critical applications, integral cladding is generally preferred. Integral cladding may be performed by a variety of methods, including solid state cladding, braze-bond cladding, and weld overlay (fusion) cladding. The lining process should be chosen after careful consideration of base metals and cladding metals desired and of the service requirements for the lined component.

Geopressured habitat: A literature review

A literature review of the geopressured-geothermal habitat is summarized. Findings are presented and discussed with respect to the principal topics: Casual agents are both geological and geochemical; they include disequilibrium compaction of sediments, clay diagenesis, aquathermal pressuring, hydrocarbon generation, and lateral tectonic compression. The overall physical and chemical characteristics of the habitats are dictated by varying combinations of sedimentation rates, alteration mineralogy, permeability, porosity and pressure, temperature, fluid content and chemistry, and hydrodynamic flow. Habitat pressure seals are considered in terms of their formation processes, geologic characteristics, and physical behavior, including pressure release and reservoir pressure recharge on a geologic time scale. World-wide occurrence of geopressured-geothermal habitats is noted. The main thrust of this topic concerns the U.S.A. and Canada; in addition, reference is made to occurrences in China and indications from deep-sea vents, as well as the contribution of paleo-overpressure to habitat initiation and maintenance. Identification and assessment of the habitat is addressed in relation to use of hydrogeologic, geophysical, geochemical, and geothermic techniques, as well as well-logging and drill-stem-test data. Massively parallel collaboration : a literature review.

The present paper explores group dynamics and electronic communication, two components of wicked problem solving that are inherent to the national security environment (as well as many other business environments). First, because there can be no ''right'' answer or solution without first having agreement about the definition of the problem and the social meaning of a ''right solution'', these problems (often) fundamentally relate to the social aspects of groups, an area with much empirical research and application still needed. Second, as computer networks have been increasingly used to conduct business with decreased costs, increased information accessibility, and rapid document, database, and message exchange, electronic communication enables a new form of problem solving group that has yet to be well understood, especially as it relates to solving wicked problems.
