The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of two methods of teaching literature. An attempt will be made to ascertain whether the teacher-directed method or the free-reading method will be more effective in meeting the needs of the elementary children in the field of literature.

The problem of this study is that of developing a program of study of Mexican literature at the graduate level at North Texas State University. The study of literature and culture is approached by probing into the influences on the thinking of the Mexican and by using an in-depth study, rather than an "anthology" approach to teaching. The findings of the study indicate a need for an upper level course in Mexican literature at North Texas State University. Therefore, the following recommendations seem appropriate: (1) that North Texas State University initiate a course in Mexican literature which may be utilized by both students in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and students in the Bilingual/Bicultural Education program; (2) that the course be made available to both graduate and upper-level students; (3) that oral communication be emphasized in the course and that student participation in the target language be maximized.

The purpose of the investigation is to examine relevant material on current trends of teaching literature to the adolescent, as revealed in reported practices of classroom teachers throughout the United States. A compilation of these procedures appears to present a picture of what is being done in the field of literature on the upper-elementary-grade level in various sections of the country.

The purpose of this study was an examination of elementary- and secondary-school libraries in Arkansas to determine the adequacy of their resources as compared with the 1960 and the 1969 national school library standards. The findings served as a base for establishing goals and recommendations for improved school library programs in Arkansas.

The problem of this study was to determine the emphasis placed on various science teaching practices by a random sample of high school biology, chemistry, and physics teachers in selected Texas high schools. The subproblem was to compare the emphasis placed on the practices as reported by the high school teachers with the emphasis as recommended by national science education specialists, teachers of biology, chemistry, and physics in selected Texas colleges and universities, and teachers of professional education courses in selected Texas colleges and universities.

The problem of this study was to determine what relationship, if any, exists between middle-grade children's general and expressed interests in certain stories contained in selected reading textbooks and the developmental value of the stories. Specifically, three sub-problems were involved, as follows: 1. To determine the developmental value of certain stories found in selected reading textbooks. 2. To determine the general and expressed interests of children in the stories. 3. To compare the general and expressed interests of the children in the stories with the developmental value of the stories.

The purpose of the investigation was to collect information from ninety representative art museums in Europe and North America, with visits made to forty-five and a validated questionnaire sent to the others; to study their research-oriented publications as to contents; and to organize the data so that they would be of value to graduate art students. Although this information will be of value to scholars, undergraduate students, and museum personnel, the study was restricted to the graduate art student because some museum libraries restrict their facilities to this educational level.

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the teacher as represented through characters in successful American commercial drama.

The problems under study were the following: 1. To determine the distribution of social and ethnic groups among the characters in books that have been awarded the Newbery and Caldecott Medals, and to analyze the treatment of certain groups. 2. To compare the ethnic distribution of characters in fifteen early Newbery Award books with the ethnic distribution of characters in fifteen recent Newbery Award books. 3. To interpret the findings of this study in the light of the objectives of the elementary school library.

The principal problem involved in this study is the impact of selected behavioral sciences upon the introductory marketing courses at collegiate schools of business administration.

The problem of this study was to analyze the answers given by four groups (grade levels) of elementary school children and one group of adults (college freshmen) to direct questions regarding natural phenomena, to classify their explanations, to determine the methods and types of explanations used by these groups when they explain typical natural phenomena, and to compare these findings with the results of other investigators, especially Jean Piaget and Mervin E. Oakes.

This study attempted to determine the specific mathematics necessary to a student in a beginning course in behavioral science research statistics. To determine the most desirable form for a review of mathematics prior to a research statistics course,, it was first necessary to determine the following: (1) the specific overall content of such a course, (2) the specific mathematics topics of such a course, and (3) the specific mathematics operations utilized in such a course. The study consisted of three parts. The first phase was a determination of the content of a typical beginning course in research statistics for the behavioral sciences. To make this determination, a survey was conducted among forty universities chosen by random sampling from those in the United States offering the Doctor of Education degree. Course outlines and textbooks used by these universities were analyzed, and topics were tabulated. In addition, a selection of recent statistics texts was analyzed, and these topics were also tabulated. These tables were used as a means of content determination.

The problem of this study was to analyze the teaching of religion in the state universities of Texas. The purposes of the study were (1) to describe instructors of religion, (2) to describe programs of chairs of religion, and (3) to examine the points of view of administrators who regulate Bible Chairs. The findings of the study are presented in five chapters. Chapter I is an introduction delineating the procedure taken in the study. Chapter II is an historical review of the literature and supplemental data. Chapter III outlines the process of data collection. Chapter IV contains a presentation of findings from university catalogs, instructors' information sheets, and data from questionnaires.

The purposes of this study are to identify and describe the function and control of facial muscles as related to sound production on brasswind instruments, to explore electromyographic theory and techniques with particular regard to the function and control of facial muscles, to identify basic theories of embouchure among brasswind teachers and performers, to develop a theory of brasswind embouchure based upon the preceding factors, and to propose recommendations with regard to brasswind pedagogy. Existing theories of embouchure were investigated by reviewing the extensive brasswind pedagogical literature, and by interviewing teachers representing two widely differing views. Electromyographic kinesiology of facial muscles was investigated as follows: a description of facial muscles was formulated by collating anatomy books; related electromyographic literature was reviewed; eloctromyographic recordings of facial muscled during, the performance of various facial muscle tasks and during brasswind performance were made using indwelling fine-wire electrodes. The following fundamental questions were raised: (1) What are the elements of brasswind embouchure, and what is the effect of each upon performance? (2) Is there a single embouchure mode which may be considered most efficient, and if so, what facial muscles are involved, and how may they be trained?

The primary problem of this study was to establish a plan for evaluating university extension programs through a review of the literature and standards for accreditation.

The problem of this investigation is to determine the amount of agreement or disagreement in the philosophies of certain authors relative to reading readiness in the first grade. Comparative data are included on evidences of the need for reading-readiness program, major factors involved, and desirable types of activities. The purpose of the study is to determine the apparent agreement or disparity found in current educational literature.

The purpose of this study was to determine the use of the computer in higher education at state-supported senior colleges and universities in the United States. The following findings and conclusions are based on the information gained from the study. 1. The average number of years computers have been used by institutions of higher education is ten. The length of time increases with both the level of offering and the enrollment of the institution. 2. A greater emphasis is placed on administrative use of the computer than on other uses. 3. A majority of the institutions have one centralized computer center that provides services to all users. Also, the majority of the individual computer users are provided the services without explicit charges or are only charged for a part of the services. 4. Policies pertaining to the use of the computer are most frequently formulated by the director of the computer center and a computer usage committee. 5. The amount of money spent for each of the different categories for expenditures (administrative, academic, and research) increases with the level of offering of the institutions. 6. In developing a construct of organization for higher education, this study is designed to describe the historical development of college and university organizational structures and supporting theory, to describe higher education's contemporary organizational structures and supporting theory, to determine from writings on complex organizations their applications to organizational structures and supporting theory in higher education, to synthesize from the search of literature a consistent theory of organizational structures and supporting theory for higher education institutions, and to develop a higher education organizational construct composed primarily of principles of organizational structure. This study explores theory of organization as it pertains to colleges and universities. Heuristically conceived, the study is reflective and developmental in nature.

The purpose of this study was to develop a concept of higher education which would be responsive to the needs of criminal justice. The study sought first to identify from both the popular and professional literature the principal roles of the three main component areas of criminal justice (police, courts, and corrections). Second, the study sought to identify those fundamental areas of knowledge which would support the common criminal justice roles; and, finally, the study sought to formulate the essential items of knowledge thus developed into an inventory of academic requirements for criminal justice education and to validate that inventory by subjecting it to the scrutiny of a panel of experts for their evaluation.

It was the purpose of this present investigation to display the tentative relationships between self-actualization and sociometric status of adolescent school students. In light of the theoretical and related literature presented, the following hypotheses were posited: 1) students who are high sociometrically will evidence higher personal orientation inventory (POI) means than the middle or low groups on more positive POI scales and 2) students who are low or middle sociometrically will evidence higher POI means than the high group on the major negative POI scales.

This study seeks to determine the values of and the procedures for establishing a children's theatre activity in the Fort Worth, Texas, metropolitan area. This study has a twofold purpose. The first is to apply the values of children's theatre to children in the Fort Worth metropolitan area. The second purpose is to develop a feasible plan for organizing a workable theatre for children. Chapter II is a review of related literature and is divided into two parts. A history of the children's theatre movement in the United States was presented to substantiate general observations of the values of children's theatre. The final part of Chapter II presents several outstanding children's theatre groups and a brief synopsis of their organization. This is followed by specific organizational needs and suggestions. The final portion of this study presents a feasible organizational plan for the establishment of a children's theatre in this metropolitan area. The plan is flexible enough that other areas could adapt it to their own needs and desires.
