War Is Kind (open access)

War Is Kind

This composition is a single-movement work for three choirs and full orchestra, including celesta, piano, and four percussionists. Total duration is fifteen minutes. The music is divided into six sections, with the overall form being substantially influenced by the structure of the poem, War Is Kind, by Stephen Crane (1871-1900). Many devices are utilized to contrast tension and relaxation, as associated with ironic elements of the text, with repetition and development of musical elements and motives providing unity for the entire work.

The Border war on drugs (open access)

The Border war on drugs

A report on smuggling of illegal drugs into the United States is a problem of serious proportions. The three major drugs of foreign source—cocaine, heroin, and marijuana-are the products traded by an enormous criminal enterprise whose retail sales total approximately $50 billion annually. Federal efforts to stop or deter international narcotics trafficking have met with only limited success.

War in Ceylon

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
"War in Ceylon" is one of twelve pieces written for a modern dance-ballet based on the Indian epic, The Ramayana. Altogether, these twelve pieces comprise my musical interpretation of The Ramayana. “War in Ceylon” is the tenth piece in the work. While this piece is for electronic tape alone, the work as a whole includes the following instrumentation: flute, piccolo, clarinet, bassoon, viola, cello, percussion quartet (playing forty-five percussion instruments, and electronic tape. The source material for “War in Ceylon” is called “Ketjak: The Ramayana Monkey Chant.” I recorded it from The Nonesuch Explorer/Music from Distant Corners of the World (Nonesuch H- 7-11). It was recorded in Bali by David Lewiston. Following is a description taken directly off the record jacket: “As dusk falls, more than 200 men gather in a temple courtyard, squatting in tight concentric circles around a small central space reserved for the chief protagonist. Suddenly, their sharp cries of tjak begin one of Bali’s most thrilling experiences. Ostensibly, the ketjak is a reenactment – complete with a chorus imitating monkeys – of the battle described in the Ramayana epic, in which the monkey army came to the aid of Prince Rama in his battle with the …

The Environmental Effects of Nuclear War (open access)

The Environmental Effects of Nuclear War

Substantial environmental disruption will significantly add to the disastrous consequences caused by the direct thermal, blast, and radiological effects brought on by a major nuclear war. Local fallout could cover several percent of the Northern Hemisphere with potentially lethal doses. Smoke from post-nuclear fires could darken the skies and induce temperature decreases of tens of degrees in continental interiors. Stratospheric ozone could be significantly reduced due to nitric oxide injections and smoke-induced circulation changes. The environmental effects spread the consequences of a nuclear war to the world population, adding to the potentially large disruptive effects a further reason to avoid such a catastrophe. 27 refs., 4 figs.
