Progress Made in the Construction of Giant Airplanes in Germany During the War

The construction of giant airplanes was begun in Germany in August, 1914. The tables annexed here show that a large number of airplanes weighing up to 15.5 tons were constructed and tested in Germany during the War, and it is certain that no other country turned out airplanes of this weight nor in such large numbers. An examination of the tables shows that by the end of the War all the manufacturers had arrived at a well-defined type, namely an airplane of about 12 tons with four engines of 260 horsepower each. The aircraft listed here are discussed with regard to useful weight and aerodynamic qualities.

"In terminating the study of the adaptation of the engine to the airplane, we will examine the problem of the turbo-compressor, the first realization of which dates from the war; this will form an addition to the indications already given on supercharging at various altitudes. This subject is of great importance for the application of the turbo-compressor worked by the exhaust gases. Assuming that the increase of pressure in the admission manifold is the same in both cases, the pressure in the exhaust manifold would be greater in the case in which the compressor is worked by the exhaust gas and there would result a certain reduction of engine power which we must be able to calculate" (p. 1).

Propeller Flight Investigation to Determine the Effects of Blade Loading

Note presenting a flight investigation of a three-blade propeller in climb and at high speed to determine the effects of blade power loading. Increasing the blade power coefficient from 0.06 to 0.09 was found to increase the efficiency approximately 8 percent at an airplane Mach number of 0.7 and a propeller-tip Mach number of 1.13. In climb, an increase in power loading over the range of blade power coefficients investigated was shown to reduce efficiency, as a consequence of increased induced drag losses.

Investigation at low speeds of deflectors and spoilers as gust alleviators on a model of the Bell X-5 airplane with 35 degree swept wings and on a high-aspect-ratio 35 degree swept-wing-fuselage model

Results of an investigation at low speeds to determine the gust-alleviation capabilities (reduction in lift-curve slope) of spoilers and deflectors on a 35 degree swept-wing model of high aspect ratio and on a 1/4-scale model of the X-5 airplane with 35 degree swept wings indicate that deflector and spoiler-deflector types of controls can be designed to provide considerable gust alleviation for a swept-wing airplane while still maintaining stability and control.

Note presenting an investigation to determine the yield strength, ultimate strength, ductility, and plastic stress-stain relations for 24S-T aluminum alloy when subjected to biaxial stresses. The data were interpreted by a generalized St. Venant theory in an attempt to predict the biaxial stress-strain relations in terms of the uniaxial tensile stress-strain relations. Stress-strain data were also obtained from flat control specimens cut from tubular specimens and compared with tension test data obtained from tubular specimens.

Details are given on the design and operation of the centrifugal compressors. A method is given for calculating the amount of power needed to drive a compressor. The effects of the use of a compressor on fuel system operation and design are discussed. Several specific superchargers that were in operation are described.

The Employment of Airships for the Transport of Passengers: Indications on the Maximum Limits of Their Useful Load, Distance Covered, Altitude and Speed

It was a conclusion of this detailed study of the practicality of using airships for carrying passengers that, although slow, airships are capable of carrying useful loads over long distances. However, it is noted that there is a certain limit to the advantages of large cubature. Beyond a certain point, the maximum altitude of the airship goes on decreasing, in spite of the fact that the range of action in the horizontal plane and the useful load go on increasing. The possibility of rapid climb is an essential factor of security in aerial navigation in the case of storms, as is velocity.

Measurements of Rudder Moments on an Airplane During Flight

Tests indicated that: 1) C airplanes with two struts are extremely susceptible to aileron maneuvers, slight alterations of the aileron sufficing to compensate great unequalized moments; 2) great unequalized moments can be produced or neutralized by the unequalized alternation of the angle of attack below the outer and inner struts. Adjustment below the outer strut is the more effective of the two. 3) When a load of bombs is suspended beyond the center of the airplane, below the wings, the bombs need not be dropped simultaneously. 4) The propeller wash of a wide open engine has considerable influence on the position and operation of the elevator. The elevator is more susceptible in flight with the engine running than in gliding flight. 5) Adjustable tail planes are not advisable for D airplanes, nor for the C type, but they are, on the other hand, to be recommended for large size and giant airplanes in which the center of gravity changes during flight. 6) The aileron values obtained by wind tunnel measurements are about 10 percent too low, though otherwise applicable. The generation and distribution of smoke from candles and from titanium tetrachloride are described in greater detail because they appear most advantageous for general application.
