This study is concerned with describing the changing concepts of space utilization in Japanese house design and the cultural forces producing the changes. Sources of information include literature spanning approximately one hundred years, a Japanese student of interior design, and-the Japanese Trade Commission in Dallas, Texas. A description of concepts of space design that were very stable for centuries in the Japanese house. The changes in architecture following World War II, and a contemporary house design by a noted Japanese architect are related to concurrent religious, philosophical, and economic forces. The influence of western culture upon Japanese life-style and design solutions to space problems is either indicated or inferred.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and discuss the changing ways in which the visual art of heraldiy was perceived by the feudal aristocracy of twelfth- and thirteenth-century England. It shows how the aristocracy evolved from a military class to a courtly, chivalric class, and how this change affected art and culture. The shifts in the perceptions of heraldry reflect this important social development of the knightly class.

This study is a report of the results of an investigation into the extent to which native materials were used in the antebellum buildings of Harrison County, Texas; the way in which they were used; and the aesthetic implications of their use. It was hoped that this research might fill a gap in the art and architectural history of Texas, since nothing has been written on this specific subject except a few articles and unpublished papers dealing with certain houses individually or with log construction in general.

"This study is limited to the organization and activities of display departments of six leading Texas department stores. It concerns the two main categories of display: window and interior display. The purpose of this thesis is to consider three opposing statements regarding aesthetics in our popular culture. The first statement is that the youth of this age are demolishing the old standards of aesthetic taste and are creating a nonaesthetic; the second statement is that the youth are enlarging the vision and scope of the accepted standard of aesthetic and changing its direction; the thrid statement is that the creations of the youth in our popular culture of today are neither new nor nonaesthetic, but merely a continuation of aesthetics as they are accepted. One statement will be chosen as the most valid of the three.

For several years the author has viewed with interest the various kinds of outdoor signs. College courses in advertising art and advertising procedure, as well as practical experience in the advertising field, have increased his interest in this fascinating business and prodded him on to further investigation. With the desire to extend his knowledge of outdoor advertising and to pass on the body of his research to others who find it useful, the author has undertaken this study.

The topographical landscapes of Miss Schell represent diversity in subject matter and media that includes oil, watercolor, and lithograph pencil scenes of Canada, New England, and Pennsylvania. Documentation used in the research included interviews and correspondence with her friends and students; photographs and slides of her paintings and drawings; exhibition lists of her works; and writings of her art ideals. This data formed five chapters of the thesis. The Introduction is a research overview; the second is her biography; the third analyzes three landscapes; the fourth compares her landscapes with eight contemporaries; and, the fifth states a conclusion of her importance as an art educator who transmitted Robert Henri's philosophies. This study is concerned with an analysis of twenty paintings by Western European artists from the thirty-five-item segment of the Anthony Denney Collection on permanent loan to the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. The paintings were considered separately in a two phase visual and verbal analysis accompanied by visual diagrams. Phase one described the primary visual qualities of each painting through examination of the art elements and principles. Phase two was a verbal description of each painting. The purpose of this investigation is to provide an analysis format suitable for abstract and non-objective works of art.

The writer, who, as an art student, has a special interest in the visual qualities of motion picture art, has undertaken to investigate the extent to which the visual aspect of art was outstanding in motion pictures receiving awards during the years 1951 through 1954. As a result of this investigation he hopes to reach some valid conclusions concerning the chronological and geographical distribution of visually excellent pictures during the period and to consider the consequences of those trends which can be identified.

An exhibition catalog was chosen as the problem for this study, for it provided a practical means for an art historian to experience the problems associated with assembling material for an exhibition and catalog. These problems included researching background material, locating and coordinating a unified collection of artifacts, working with museum and research center staffs, plus the experience of photographing, editing, arranging lay-outs and writing in the format of an exhibition catalog.

Realizing the need on the part of the general public for a better background for selection of useful household objects that combine utility and beauty of line, the author planned an exhibition in an attempt to develop a community awareness to good design in useful objects available in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The Black Revolution, an American social upheaval of this century, poses numerous questions and challenges to all segments of our culture. For the artists, black and white, there is a dilemma of commitment as regards the acceptance of Black art for its merit without approval of the white artist. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the Black Revolution would be a turning point in American Negro art.

This paper explores what kinds of paintings do children of a particular locale really like and what are some of the reasons for their choices. This information could be of use in planning methods of developing and nurturing aesthetic experiences through more wisely chosen reproductions of masterpieces of paintings.

With the rising tensions and strains created by modern America, historians have sought diligently to discover the answers to industrial America's problems. One answer lay in American reform movements, and as the New Deal reforms came under fierce attack in the 1950's, liberal historians sought diligently to give to reform movements historical authenticity.

In this limited survey, nineteenth-century cast-iron facades in Texas were recorded and compared to iron-fronted buildings in New York City. It was found that generally, the still existing buildings in Texas cities and towns were similar to those in New York in style but differed to the extent to which the cast-iron elements were used. It appears that nineteenth-century builders in Texas knew of New York trends in cast-iron but had definite regional preferences.

The author undertook this analysis of the caricatures of the two outstanding artists, Oscar Berger and David Low, to determine the factors which have shaped the style of each artist and the factors which have determined the public appeal of each artist's work.

In view of the fact that clay has not been used so extensively or wisely in elementary art education as the generally recognized importance of the material seems to justify, the purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities of clay as a creative medium and to determine which of the many ceramic techniques are most suitable for use by pupils in the upper elementary grade.

The present study concerns the use of native materials in craft problems which might be used profitably in public schools. The purpose of the research and experiments was fourfold: first, to make available information on the utility of certain native materials which the writer believed would be helpful to people interested in crafts; second, to acquaint interested individuals with native dye plants; third, to encourage a wide use of native materials; and fourth, to work out for use in public schools a series of craft problems utilizing native materials.

In this study the public-school buildings of Denton are examined for evidences of modern architectural design. Chapter I serves as an introduction. Chapter II presents a history of the Denton Public Schools. Chapter III presents standards for evaluating modern school architecture. Features of existing school buildings, built earlier than 1964, which, in character, exemplify modern architectural design are described in Chapter IV. The three school buildings built since 1946 and the one under construction are described in detail and evaluated according to the standards given. Representative photostatic reproduction and photographs illustrate the text. In Chapter V a summary of the study is given and conclusions are presented.

How much art is projected into the home and community as a result of art experiences in the school is difficult to determine without some criterion as a standard for judgement. Based upon this premise, the author attempted, with the cooperation of the art committee of the Dallas Junior League, to test the aesthetic judgement of selected groups of children in the Dallas Public Schools by evaluating their reactions to an exhibition of common household articles currently available on the Dallas market.

In developing the study, the writer has attempted to devise a method whereby high-school students may gain an understanding of certain trends in modern abstract and non-objective painting.

For the average person many opportunities for esthetic enjoyment of useful objects exist if the relationship between beauty and utility is understood. Furniture and other articles of daily use have acquired new and radical changes of design, based on function, which are altering esthetic concepts. This new approach to design is gradually being accepted by manufacturers and producers. Do purchasers appreciate and accept these structural and functional bases of contemporary design? If they do not, wherein does their deficiency lie, and how may it be corrected? This is the problem that the writer has attempted to investigate through this study.

The purpose of this study was to determine the trends that are developing in the architecture of the civic, commercial, and religious buildings in Fort Worth, Texas. This will be shown by an analysis of what the author considers to be the best examples of buildings constructed in Fort Worth during the past ten years.

The present study of an ideal mixture for thrown ware is an outgrowth of a long-time personal interested developed during undergraduate work at North Texas State University. While a natural earthenware clay proved to be the best all-purpose clay for class use, it was not ideal for throwing.
