Ethylbromo Acetate as an Olfactory Probe (open access)

Ethylbromo Acetate as an Olfactory Probe

Olfactory transduction mechanisms are best studied when specific blocking agents are available with which to modify cellular responses to odorant stimulation. This study is an electrophysiological investigation of functional group-specific olfactory acceptor mechanisms using ethylbromo acetate (EtBrAc), a World War I war gas which inhibits olfactory responses to odorant stimulation. The major findings of this investigation show that (1) vaporous EtBrAc is found to be a quick and effective inhibitor of electroolfactogram (EOG) responses to odorant stimulation, (2) isoamyl acetate is shown to protect EOG responses to a wide variety of odorants, inclusive of itself, from the inhibition effect of EtBrAc treatment, and (3) amine acceptor sites exist which are resistant to the inhibitory effects fo EtBrAc treatment.

The Response of White Mice to Pituitary Gonadotropins of Fish (open access)

The Response of White Mice to Pituitary Gonadotropins of Fish

The purpose of this experiment is to determine if immature female white mice will react to the gonadotropic hormone from the anterior pituitary of several species of fish. If they can be shown to do so, a second purpose is to establish an assay unit for this fish gonadotropin in order that it may be used with predictable results in inducing extra-seasonal spawning for fresh-water conservation practices.

A Comparative Study of Egg Media in the Primary Isolation of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis

The primary purpose of this investigation is not only to improve the present technique of culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but also to make a comparative study of the media use, namely, Veterans Administration modification of Trudeau's medium, Lowenstein's egg medium, and that developed by the author, in order to find which, if any, of these will most easily and effectively meet the needs of the hospital laboratory.

An Investigation of Algae and Common Tastes and Odors in Fresh Water (open access)

An Investigation of Algae and Common Tastes and Odors in Fresh Water

The purpose of this investigation was to isolate and grow algae common to the southwest in unialgal culture; to either sustain or grow one of the principal bloom-causing organisms, with emphasis on Microcystis aeruginosa; to isolate and culture actinomycetes from the same waters from which the algae were obtained; and to inoculate these algae with actinomycetes and determine their effects through development and deterioration.

A Microbial Survey of Raw Ingredients Used in Finished Products at Kraft Foods Company, Garland, Texas

The purpose of this investigation is to determine through routine checks the number of organisms present in the various raw ingredients used for the preparation of foods. The problem has consisted of, first, a determination of the total bacterial population by numbers; second, a determination of the incidence of colon bacteria in the samples examined; third, a determination of the presence of yeasts and molds; and fourth, an attempt to utilize this information obtained in judging the methods of handling the raw ingredients before they are used in the processing of foods.

Biological Indices of Stream Pollution (open access)

Biological Indices of Stream Pollution

A thorough biological survey and evaluation is a lengthy and expensive project. The number of technically trained persons required prevent its use by most public agencies. Since public health departments are the groups most frequently concerned with measuring the effects of pollution in streams, a need exists for a simplified method of sanitary survey. Recognizing this need, the Texas Health Department assigned the writer the problem of devising a method of survey which would require a field party of two and could be conducted entirely from a mobile field laboratory.

A Solution for High Bacterial Counts in a Local Dairy, Denton, Texas

It is the aim of this investigation to determine through routine checks if the bacterial count in the milk from Brooks Dairy Company is high and if so to determine the source. If it is found that the laboratory plate counts are unnecessarily high, it is the further purpose of this paper to make recommendations for improvements in the quality of milk produced by this dairy plant.

A Gas Chromatographic Study of Actinomycete Tastes and Odors

The primary purpose of this study was to continue the search for a suitable liquid phase which could be utilized in a gas chromatographic study of actinomycetic tastes and odors. Of equal importance were the attempts to characterize the compounds found in the odor water.

A Quantitative and Qualitative Bacterial Analysis of Pecan Creek (open access)

A Quantitative and Qualitative Bacterial Analysis of Pecan Creek

Since Pecan Creek receives sewage wastes from an obviously inadequate disposal system, it seemed possible that it could receive pathogenic bacteria. The fact that these might be present in numbers sufficient to cause epidemics, provided the proper natural vectors were present, stimulated an interest in and the pursuance of this study.

The Effects of Selected Algicides and Some Coordination Complexes upon the Apparent Photosynthesis of Chlorella Pyrenoidosa (open access)

The Effects of Selected Algicides and Some Coordination Complexes upon the Apparent Photosynthesis of Chlorella Pyrenoidosa

Many experiments have been performed with the Warburg apparatus, or variations of this manometric technique, since Warburg's experiments (52, 53) where the effects of cyanides upon dark reactions and of urethanes upon light reactions of photosynthesis were demonstrated. The same basic techniques were utilized in this research in attempting to determine the effects of some coordination complexes upon the apparent photosynthetic rate of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. A second goal of the present paper was to investigate the potential of the Warburg apparatus as a tool for screening algicidal compounds.

Assimilation of Organic Carbon by Aquatic Actinomycetes

There were two purposes of this investigation: the first was to develop a method for studying spore germination, hyphal growth and mycelial development of the aquatic actinomycetes under the microscope so that the life cycle of this organism could be continuously followed. The second purpose was to determine the rate of carbon utilization from various types of nutritional sources, and to correlate this with the colony development and spore formation.
