An Analysis of Attribution Patterns of Internally and Externally Controlled Children After Playing a Computer Video Game (open access)

An Analysis of Attribution Patterns of Internally and Externally Controlled Children After Playing a Computer Video Game

The focus of this study was to determine how attribution patterns of children with an internal or external locus of control differ when playing a computer video game. Forty subjects each (twenty internally controlled and twenty externally controlled) were placed in a competitive or non-competitive treatment setting with a successful or unsuccessful outcome. Each subject played a computer video game made by a major manufacturer. At the completion of each session, each subject was asked to rate the four attributes of ability, effort, task difficulty, and luck. The results were then analyzed using analysis of variance with age as a covariate.

Comparative Feeding Ecology of Leaf Pack-Inhabiting Systellognathan Stoneflies (Plecoptera) in the Upper Little Missouri River, Arkansas (open access)

Comparative Feeding Ecology of Leaf Pack-Inhabiting Systellognathan Stoneflies (Plecoptera) in the Upper Little Missouri River, Arkansas

The feeding ecologies of leaf pack-associated systellognathan stoneflies were examined from 6 June 1980 21 May 1981. Species composition, seasonal abundance, nymphal growth, feeding habits and mouthpart morphology were determined for the eight dominant stonefly species. Prey preferences and predator-prey size relationships were also examined for omnivorous and carnivorous species. Foregut analysis from 2860 individuals indicated opportunistic feeding on the most abundant prey insects, usually in proportion to prey frequency. Feeding preference studies generally indicated random feeding on major prey groups. Prey and predator sizes were usually highly correlated (p<0.01), with predators expanding their prey size thresholds with growth. The potential for competition between sympatric stoneflies for prey is discussed.

Reactivity of Five-Coordinate Intermediates Derived from (Chelate) Tetracarbonylmetal (0) Complexes (open access)

Reactivity of Five-Coordinate Intermediates Derived from (Chelate) Tetracarbonylmetal (0) Complexes

The reactivity of the [(Phen)Cr(CO)_3] intermediate with phosphines and phosphites (L) has been investigated through ligand-competition studies. This intermediate possesses virtually no ability to discriminate among L. The agreement between reactivity data for the thermal and photochemically-generated intermediates indicates that the same intermediate is produced via each process. Pulsed laser flash photolysis of (n^2-NP)M(CO)_4 (I) (M = Cr, Mo; NP = 1-diethylamino-2-diphenylphosphinoethane) in the absence and presence of P (OPr-i)_3 (L) in 1,2-dichloroethane and chlorobenzene induces unimolecular ring-opening to afford [(n^1-NP)M(CO)_4] (II), in which the bidentate ligand is coordinated through P. Reaction of this intermediate takes place through competitive ring-reclosure and attack at (II) by L to afford (I) and cis-(n^1-NP) (L)M(CO)_4.

High performance, suppressed-fission ICF hybrid (open access)

High performance, suppressed-fission ICF hybrid

The neutronics aspects of an ICF hybrid concept are discussed. The breeding blanket consists of a beryllium neutron multiplier, metallic thorium fertile fuel and a liquid-lithium coolant. The fertile fuel fraction is 30 vol%, which is much higher than previous one-zone, suppressed-fission hybrid concepts. Fission in the bred /sup 233/U is suppressed by competition from tritium breeding reactions in /sup 6/Li. The total breeding ratio, T + F, is 2.05, and the total neutron energy deposited is 41.1 MeV per DT neutron. The 800-MW (fusion) hybrid produces approx. 3500 kg of /sup 233/U per full-power-year.
