An Analysis of Attribution Patterns of Internally and Externally Controlled Children After Playing a Computer Video Game (open access)

An Analysis of Attribution Patterns of Internally and Externally Controlled Children After Playing a Computer Video Game

The focus of this study was to determine how attribution patterns of children with an internal or external locus of control differ when playing a computer video game. Forty subjects each (twenty internally controlled and twenty externally controlled) were placed in a competitive or non-competitive treatment setting with a successful or unsuccessful outcome. Each subject played a computer video game made by a major manufacturer. At the completion of each session, each subject was asked to rate the four attributes of ability, effort, task difficulty, and luck. The results were then analyzed using analysis of variance with age as a covariate.

The Psychological and Social Adjustment of International Students at a Selected Institution of Higher Education (open access)

The Psychological and Social Adjustment of International Students at a Selected Institution of Higher Education

The purposes of this study were to examine the problems of international students, assess the intensity of these problems, and describe relationships between the intensity of the problems and the following demographic variables: age, gender, number of years in the study of English, number of years living in the United States, grade point average at North Texas State University, major area of study at North Texas State University, and country of origin. International students pragmatically view their sojourn in the United States as an educational experience that will allow them to improve their minds and to travel. Financial concerns were expressed by the desire to work either part time or during vacation periods. As a group, international students do not exhibit concerns which debilitate their movement toward established goals. However, there are individual students who are in need of cultural refraining, communication abilities, and coping skills.

The Effects of Progressive Relaxation Instructions on College Students' Performance on a Paired-Associate Learning Task (open access)

The Effects of Progressive Relaxation Instructions on College Students' Performance on a Paired-Associate Learning Task

The problem of this study was to compare performances of college students given relaxation instructions and those not given those instructions on a paired-associate learning task. The results indicated that relaxation instructions alone produced a decrement in recall. When subjects received relaxation instructions as well as the suggestion that relaxation enhances learning, the decrement did not occur. Thus, situational demand characteristics appeared to be a significant variable in determining what effect relaxation instructions had on recall.

Clare W. Graves' Levels of Psychological Existence: A Test Design (open access)

Clare W. Graves' Levels of Psychological Existence: A Test Design

The purpose of this study was to develop a test which would reveal a person's primary level of existence according to Clare W. Graves' model of adult psychosocial behavior. The sub-purposes of this study were (1) to translate Graves' theoretical levels of existence into discrete components of attitude and behavior which could then be assessed with a written test instrument, (2) to create such a written instrument, and (3) to test the instrument for reliability and validity. The general conclusion of this study is that the Levels of Existence test meets the standards of reliability and validity accepted within psychometrics sufficiently to recommend that it be revised with respect to certain details as specified in the study, and that further research be undertaken.

The Retentive Aspects of Selected Qualities of Fitness as a Function of Inactivity in College Men (open access)

The Retentive Aspects of Selected Qualities of Fitness as a Function of Inactivity in College Men

The purposes of this study were to (a) investigate the physiological changes produced in college men after a nine-week circuit training and jogging conditioning program, (b) analyze the effects of deconditioning periods of four, six, and eight weeks upon the physical fitness of college men, and (c) compare the developmental and retentive aspects of muscular strength, muscular endurance, circulo-respiratory endurance, and skinfold measurements. Pearson Product-Moment correlations of pre-test measures, post-test measures, differences between pre-test and post-test measures, and differences between post-test and respective retention test measures did not identify any consistent pattern of developmental or retentive relationships. The components of fitness tended to develop and deteriorate independently of each other.

The Development of an Instrument for Assessing State High School Interscholastic Activities Associations

The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable assessment instrument. This instrument is to be used by school administrators to assess the organizational structure and administrative effectiveness of state high school interscholastic activities associations. This study proceeded through four phases. The first phase was for developing criteria items and included a review of the literature. The second phase was for the purpose of item validation and consisted of submitting a questionnaire to an advisory panel of five persons. The questionnaire was submitted to a randomly selected group of state interscholastic activities associations' directors and presidents of the state superintendents associations and the state high school principals associations. In the fourth phase of the study the reliability of the instrument was established through a questionnaire survey using a similar population as the validity survey.
