The popular image of the West in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries incorporates radically opposing images: the West is viewed as a Garden of Eden at times, but it is also frequently seen as violent, a land inimical to man. The region both attracted and repelled. Among those attracted were artists who carried back some of the first images of the land. Thomas Moran (1837-1926) became associated quite early with the West because a pair of his paintings of western canyons was purchased by the United States Government.

This work is an attempt to examine the nature of psychohistorical writing after 1958 and to assess the impact of this new discipline in historiography. The year 1958 was chosen as the date of beginning of scholarly psychohistory for two reasons: in that year the highly respected historian, William Langer, in a presidential address to the American Historical Association, called upon his colleagues to use psychoanalysis in their research; and Erik Erikcon published Young Man Luther: A Study in Psychoanalysis and History, which has been accepted ever since as the finest example of psychohistorical writing.

When, at age forty-nine, B.B. McKinney becae the Music Editor for the Baptist Sunday School Board, he began a career as probably the most influential man in Southern Baptist music, setting in motion the machinery that has made the Southern Baptist church music program among the largest in the nation. After six years with the Board, McKinney was promoted to Secretary of the newly-formed Church Music Department. Through his leadership state conventions were led to employ music secretaries to help train and assist churches with their individual music programs. Besides his continued editorship and composing, he set up, with his associate Hines Sims, the Church Music Training Course, and began the publication of a monthly journal, The Church Musician.

In the middle of his career, Arthur Garfield Dove created a smell yet novel body of landscape assemblages. They illustrate Dove's central interest in evoking nature--its motifs and rhythms--through imaginative associations of organic and man-made materials. These works represent Dove's synthesis of contemporary European stylistic and intellectual ideas as well as American philosophies and concerns. They also reflect the influence of Alfred Stieglitz and his circle and the artist Helen Torr, Dove's second wife. This study examines how Dove used a complex interplay of European theory and technique, American ideas and his own nature-based abstract style to create the landscape assemblages, works that are uniquely independent in the history of American art.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the choral works of Colin Brumby, with a special focus on the musical-textual relationships of selected works from his body of choral compositions, which number more than one hundred and twenty. This investigation includes information gathered in Australia at the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, and the Australian Music Centre, as well as information furnished in a personal interview with the composer in Brisbane, Australia, in June 1994, in addition to an August 1994 telephone interview cnducted with Thomas Shapcott, the Australian poet with whom Brumby collaberated on over twenty choral compositions.

After an extensive survey of available literature in Readers Theatre and Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor, the purpose for this thesis was to cut and convert The Merry Wives into the twentieth century idiom from the authorized version found in the 1623 folio.

This thesis examines the rhetorical dimensions of oral interpretation. A group interpretation script entitled "A New Prayer for Peace" was compiled and rehearsed. Two public performances were given to audiences in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth (Texas). The audience members were surveyed to solicit subjective reaction.

The problem of this study was the investigation of the desirability of teaching haptics in the basic speech classroom, the rhetorical means and strategies to be used, and the design used to describe these means.

The purpose of this study was to test the therapeutic usefulness of a completely self-administered, behavior-therapy technique: systematic desensitization. The method involved the comparison of behavior change following the treatment of two groups of subjects. One group received the actual systematic-desensitization procedure, while the other underwent a similar but theoretically ineffective treatment termed attention-placebo.

The purpose of this thesis was to relate experiences and philosophies of James Surls to his art in order to determine changes in his artistic style. The problem was to study Surls' sculpture in approximately one decade in order to determine changes in his style, to determine which sculptures are important in making these changes, and to analyze how and why these changes occurred.

Heinrich Zille (1858-1929), an artist whose creative vision was concentrated on Berlin's working class , portrayed urban life with devastating accuracy and earthy humor. His direct and often crude rendering linked his drawing and prints with other artists who avoided sentimentality and idealization in their works.

On December 5, 1969, an experimental production of Neil Simon's A Star-Spangled Girl was presented at the Callier Hearing and Speech Center in Denton, Texas. On December 6, 1969, the production was repeated in the Studio Theatre on the North Texas State University campus in Denton, Texas. The production was experimental in that it was directed for a deaf audience.

This annotated translation of Chabanon's Musique considérée with accompanying analysis seeks to establish the aesthetic principles expressed in his book as a significant and independentdeparture from the musical doctrines which prevailed in eighteenth-century France.

This thesis examines Allen's development using Annie Hall (1977), Manhattan (1979), and Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) as landmarks. Three criteria (chapters) structure the analysis: comedy, narrative, and romance.

By presenting the auditor as a unifying principle that links Browning's earliest works to his dramatic monologues, this dissertation enhances the importance of the ever-ignored experimental works in developing the dramatic monologue technique. An exploration of the emergence and development of the auditor has an additional, but never ancillary, effect of proclaiming the originality and inventiveness of Browning's dramatic technique.

This study surveys the dreams and ideas of the missionary movement as shown in the life of the Worcester-Robertson family who lived among the Cherokee and Creek Indians. Captain Stormfield, the main character in Mark Twain's last book, Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven (1909), appears numerous times--under either the Stormfield name or some other--in Twain's published and unpublished works. Scholar's since Train's death have given only passing or slight notice to the Stormfield character. His numerous appearances, however his pivotal function among several unfinished works, and his essential optimism must lead to an awareness of his significant role in Twain's fiction.

This composition is based off the poem of the same name by Richard Sale. No particular harmonic plan was envisioned for Parts I, II and IV, because it was necessary for the harmonic scheme to be as fluid as the poetry. If the ideas of the text were similar some attempt was made to use a similar or modified melodic line or harmonic scheme. The structure of the text became the structure of the work. The motivating factor is the text, hence the many meter changes in order to keep pace with the poetry.

The purpose of this dissertation is to identify the Stoic influences in the Jacobean drama. Although the Stoic figure and references to Stoicism appear frequently in this drama, there has never been a comprehensive study of the Stoic element in the drama of this period. This study will fill this scholastic gap.

This dissertation assesses Leonardo Bruni as an individual in Renaissance Italy, analyzes the general contours of his humanism, and demonstrates the central role played by history in his thought. The sources used include manuscripts and printed editions if Bruni's works, the letters and works of his contemporaries, certain ancient and medieval works, and subsequent scholarship on the subject.
