The Model Q-1212C Pulser is a single frequency (60 pps) generator whose output waveform is characterized by a rise-time of less than 4 mµsec and, depending upon the method of termination, an exponential decay having a time constant of 300 or 600µsec. The waveform approximates that produced by a radiation detector. The waveform approximates that produced by a radiation detector. The maximum available output from the instrument is 10 volts, positive or negative polarity, and is continuously adjustable by means of step switches and a 10-turn potentiometer. The potentiometer has a linearity of 0.1%.

Operating Manual for the Argonaut Reactor

The design of the Argonaut (Argonne Nuclear Assembly for University Training) was initiated by the Reactor Engineering Division of Argonne National Laboratory to satisfy needs for a low-power reactor facility within the Laboratory, and for training uses within the international School of Nuclear Science and Engineering (ISNSE). It was intended primarily for instruction and research in reactor physics. It was also considered as a possibility that it would fulfill the requirements of universities engaged in a program of nuclear science. The cost of the facility was to be kept to a minimum consistent with the high degree of inherent safety and a great amount of flexibility in the system. The basic design stemmed from the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory Thermal Test Reactor* (TTR), now called Nuclear Test Reactor (NTR). Modification during the course of the work justified the new name "Argonaut".

Emphasis has been placed on those isotopes of particular interest to Radiological Sciences programs and the manual is intended as a standard through the use of which comparable values can be reported from all units in the Department.

The HAPO Critical Incident Alarm, Model I, is an instrument designed to give an audible and visual alarm signal in the event of a critical incident to which it is exposed. There will be thirty-one (31) of these instruments installed and several spares located in the various manufacturing buildings in the Chemical Processing Department where there exists any possibility of a critical incident occurring. The instrument is intended as a post or after-the-fact warning device. It will offer no protection prior or leading up to, nor prevent, a critical incident. They are intended to be operated from the 115 V. A.C., 60 C.P.S. emergency line power. The instrument is self-contained, including the radiation detector, and will be calibrated to alarm at 500 mr/hour in a gamma field.

A pile gas leak detection system consisting of a purchased mass spectrographic type of helium detector, a long sampling line for use in remote or relatively inaccessable locations, a pump to pull a continuous sample of gas from the tip of the probe to the detector, and a rotameter to measure the gas flow rate in the sampling line has been developed, calibrated, operationally tested. The system is practical for use in locating all pile gas leaks larger than about 0.1 cubic foot per hour.

Analysis of Uranium Fuel-Element Wafers from Atomics International for Uranium, Plutonium and Samarium

Five irradiated and five unirradiated wafers were analyzed. Each wafer was analyzed for samarium by emission spectrography. The unirradiated wafers were analyzed for uranium by coulometric and potentiometric methods and for uranium isotopes by mass spectrometry. The irradiated wafers were analyzed for uranium and plutonium by coulometric methods, for plutonium isotopes by the 256-channel alpha pulse analyzer, and for the isotopes of uranium and of plutonium by mass spectrometry. The methods of preparing wafers for analysis are discussed; the data are tabulated.

Generalized Heat Conduction Code for the IBM-7090 Computer

The IBM-70% code GHT has been programmed for the 7090computer, to be run under control of the IBM-7090 FORTAN Monitor System. By eliminating the use of tapes for intermediate number storage, it has been possible to reduce computing time by a factor of 26 over the 704. A minimum of three tapes are required; one for input, one for output, and the System tape. One scratch tape is required for transient problems, and one punch tape is required if the steady-state temperature distribution is to be punched on cards.
