EPIC: An Iterative Model for Metadata Improvement

Abstract: This paper provides a case study of iterative metadata correction and enhancement at the University of North Texas (UNT), within a model that we have developed to describe this process: Evaluate, Prioritize, Identify, Correct (EPIC). These steps are illustrated within the paper to show how they function at UNT and why it may serve as a useful tool for other organizations. We suggest that the EPIC model works for ongoing assessment, but is particularly useful for large remediation and enhancement projects to plan timelines and to allocate the people and resources needed to determine what issues should be addressed (evaluate), to rate their level of severity, importance, or difficulty (prioritize), to define subsets or records that are affected (identify), and to make changes based on prioritization (correct).

Window onto a Vanished World: Lahu texts from Thailand in the 1960’s

This extremely valuable collection of texts in the Lahu language represents the language and culture in the 1960’s, a time when the heritage language and culture were still vibrant and not yet globalized, hence the title Window on a Vanished World. It is also one of the largest collections of texts in any Tibeto-Burman language. The texts are available as a book and online with the audio (originally from 1960’s magnetic tape). This is a massive achievement for all involved in the recording, conversion, and editing.

Virtuosa di Musica di Camera: A Performance Edition of Sonata in F Major, Op. 1, No. 2 by Anna Bon di Venezia (open access)

Virtuosa di Musica di Camera: A Performance Edition of Sonata in F Major, Op. 1, No. 2 by Anna Bon di Venezia

The flute music of Anna Bon di Venezia (1738–ca. 1767) belongs to the group of long-overlooked compositions by women composers throughout history worthy of rediscovery. This dissertation includes a discussion of Bon's life and music, as well as the artistic, historical, and theoretical significance of her compositions. It also presents biographical research on Bon, including Michaela Krucsay's dissertation, which provides new evidence of Bon's birth date, which had been uncertain up until 2015. Bon's Sonata in F Major for flute and basso continuo is analyzed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the work. A table is provided explaining specific ornaments and articulations added to the performance edition. In addition, this dissertation includes analyses of sonatas by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–1788) and Johann Joachim Quantz (1697–1773) to contextualize Bon's sonatas within the standard flute repertoire. This dissertation expands the music scholarship on this distinguished composer and performer and provides a historically informed performance edition of the Sonata in F Major, op. 1, no. 2, for flute and piano, to serve as a model to modern flutists for historically informed performances of Bon's entire opus 1.

Defect Modulated Properties of Molybdenum Disulfide Monolayer Films (open access)

Defect Modulated Properties of Molybdenum Disulfide Monolayer Films

In this dissertation work, the study focuses on large areal growth of MoS2 monolayers and a study of the structural, optical and electrical properties of such monolayers before and after transfer using a polymer-lift off technique. This work will discuss the issue of contact resistance and the effect of defects (both intrinsic and extrinsic) on the overall quality of the monolayer films. The significance of this dissertation work is that a reproducible strategy for monolayer MoS2 film growth and quantification of areal coverage as well as the detrimental effects of processing on device performance is presented.

The United States Occupation of Mexico City, 1847-1848

The expansionist agenda of the Polk administration culminated in the War with Mexico. The capture of Mexico City in September 1847 left the United States Army with the unprecedented task of occupying an enemy capital for an extended period. After the initial theaters of operation proved unable to secure a peace, Maj. Gen. Winfield Scott commenced a campaign to take central Mexico including the capital city. In March 1847, an army of 11,000 soldiers under Scott landed at Vera Cruz. In six months, Scott's army marched over 250 miles and won five major battles. In mid-September, Scott took Mexico City. Throughout the campaign, Scott attempted to implement a pacification plan in an effort to prompt Mexico to open peace negotiations. Concern for his army weighed heavily on him as he faced unprecedented challenges in occupying Mexico City after its capture. The United States simply had almost no experience in the ramifications of fighting a foreign war, other than a few brief small-scale incursions onto foreign soil at Tripoli in 1805 and in British Canada. The difficulties that arose for Scott from the situation in Mexico were frustrating. Scott pacification plan used conciliation, coercion, and force on Mexico's army and people …

(Those Were the) Good Times: The Disco Experience in Four Parts (open access)

(Those Were the) Good Times: The Disco Experience in Four Parts

On the one hand, using a traditional narrative approach, this dissertation examines disco's historical trajectory from an underground movement to a mainstream phenomenon, and analyzes its relationships to American cultural and racial tensions during the 1970s and 1980s. On the other hand, this dissertation also departs from traditional historical approaches by emphasizing an archive of personal experiences, memories, and reflections produced over the last four decades by individuals, living and dead, whose creative expressions help give disco its definition. Each chapter is organized around the story of an individual DJ whose work and play reflected the broader disco landscape. Together, the anecdotal experiences of these DJs help to conjure a collective biography of disco, emphasizing the significance of disco not only as a "genre" of pop music, but as a larger reference point for shared, and sometimes contested, cultural experiences.
