Visceral Data is a short documentary formatted for 360-cinema (commonly referred to as virtual reality or VR) that explores the integration of art and science, and how aesthetically creative treatments of raw data are an engaging way to interpret complex information. With Roger Malina, executive editor of Leonardo, the world's foremost academic journal for the intersections of art, science, and technology, providing a narrative overview of the subject, six art-scientists/science-artists discuss specific pieces of their artistic output to provide examples. As Roger Malina asserts, civilization is "going through an epistemological revolution as deep as the Copernican Revolution," and as we progress further into the 21st century, we will need hybrid professionals working in the arts and sciences to help humanity navigate through the age of big data.

An Optimized Control System for the Independent Control of the Inputs of Doherty Power Amplifier

This thesis presents an optimized drive signal control system for a 2.5 GHz Doherty power amplifier (PA). The designed system enables independent control of the amplitudes and phases of the drive signals fed to the inputs of two parallel PAs. This control system is demonstrated here for Doherty PA architecture with a combiner network which is used as an impedance inversion between the path of two parallel connected PAs. Independent control of the inputs is achieved by incorporating a variable attenuator (VA) and a variable phase shifter (VPS) in each of the two parallel paths. Integrating VA and VPS allows driving varying power levels with an arbitrary phase difference between the individual parallel PAs. A Combiner network consists of a quarter-wave transmission line at the output of the main power amplifier, which is used to invert the impedance between the main and peaking transistor. The specific VA (Qorvo QPC6614) and VPS (Qorvo QPC2108) components that are used for the test system provide an amplitude attenuation range from 0.5 dB to 31.5 dB with a step size of 0.5 dB and a phase range from 0◦ to 360◦ for a step size of 5.6◦at the intended operating frequency of 2.5 GHz, …

Curation Subscription Box Services: Implications for the Pet Industry

This study aims to understand customers' preferred attributes and features of curated subscription box services (CSBS) for pet products and to segment customer groups by favored attributes and features to optimize the CSBS. First, a pretest with 46 students at a southwestern public university in the U.S. was implemented to explore customers' preferences on attributes and features in the subscription service. Choice-based conjoint (CBC) analysis was employed in the challenging tradeoff situations after MaxDiff (best-worst scaling) evaluation. Next, the main study was conducted using the survey method with 350 American pet owners recruited by the commercial data platform called Prolific. The preference of five CSBS attributes (i.e., product, personalization, e-service quality, communication and interaction, and price) and 18 related features were examined. Cluster analysis for the 350 respondents identified customer segment groups based on their CSBS preferences derived from the conjoint analysis. The results of this study support that customers prioritized price, product, and personalization attributes in their CSBS choice. The three groups are product-oriented, personalization-oriented, and price-favored segments. Autonomic Zero Trust Framework for Network Protection

With the technological improvements, the number of Internet connected devices is increasing tremendously. We also observe an increase in cyberattacks since the attackers want to use all these interconnected devices for malicious intention. Even though there exist many proactive security solutions, it is not practical to run all the security solutions on them as they have limited computational resources and even battery operated. As an alternative, Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) has become popular is because it defines boundaries and requires to monitor all events, configurations, and connections and evaluate them to enforce rejecting by default and accepting only if they are known and accepted as well as applies a continuous trust evaluation. In addition, we need to be able to respond as quickly as possible, which cannot be managed by human interaction but through autonomous computing paradigm. Therefore, in this work, we propose a framework that would implement ZTA using autonomous computing paradigm. The proposed solution, Autonomic ZTA Management Engine (AZME) framework, focusing on enforcing ZTA on network, uses a set of sensors to monitor a network, a set of user-defined policies to define which actions to be taken (through controller). Heat Transfer Analysis of Bio-Printed Tissue Mimicking Material Mixed with Silver Nanoparticles

Novel tissue mimicking materials have been developed for cancer treatment research. In the present research work, the tissue mimicking material is printed using 3D bioprinting technology. The nanoparticles are homogeneously mixed with tissue mimicking materials to enhance the heating capacity. The thermal conductivity of tissue mimicking materials is measured using a micropipette thermal sensor (MTS). Further, the optimal value is identified based on optimization technique and incorporated into a theoretical model to predict the surface temperature of microsphere. The heat conduction governing equation with Lambert law is numerically solved using COMSOL Multiphysics software. To validate the present simulation results, the experiments are conducted using a continuous laser system.

Microgravity Vortex Phase Separator for Liquid Amine CO2 Removal System

The present study investigates vortex phase separator (VPS) technology as a new approach for a liquid amine CO2 removal system. Experimental results obtained using a 99.99% pure CO2 stream and liquid amine with varying concentrations demonstrate the VPS' ability to decrease CO2 volume at its gas outlet. Operating parameters such as CO2 flow rate, relative humidity (RH), and temperature were systematically varied during experimental procedure, as well as working fluid temperature, volume, and flow rate. The subscale design for a VPS with a 3" inner diameter, 3.5" outer diameter, and 3.63" height removed a maximum of 84% of CO2 from a CO2 stream at 3.7 SCFH flow rate, 14°C temperature, and 82% RH, using 100 mL of 100% amine circulated at 1.52 LPM flow rate. The designed VPS also showed to be effective in removing relative humidity of the CO2 stream by up to 26% for the stated parameters. Regeneration of liquid amine in the VPS system is also proposed to allow for continuous CO2 removal. Developing a Generalizable Two-Input Genetic AND Logic Gate in Arabidopsis thaliana for Multi-Signal Processing

With effective engineering using synthetic biology approaches, plant-based platforms could conceivably be designed to minimize the production costs and wastes of high-value products such as medicines, biofuels, and chemical feedstocks that would otherwise be uneconomical. Additionally, modern agricultural crops could be engineered to be more productive, resilient, or restorative in different or rapidly changing environments and climates. To achieve these complex goals, information-processing genetic devices and circuits containing multiple interacting parts that behave predictably must be developed. A genetic Boolean AND logic gate is a device that computes the presence or absence of two inputs (signals, stimuli) and produces an output (response) only if both inputs are present. Here, we optimized individual genetic components and used synthetic protein heterodimerizing domains to rationally assemble genetic AND logic gates that integrate two hormonal inputs in whole plants. These AND gates produce an output only in the presence of both abscisic acid and auxin, but not when either or neither hormone is present. Furthermore, we demonstrate the AND gate can also integrate two plant stresses, cold temperature and bacterial infection, to produce a specific response. Elucidating the Effects of Pre-Treatment Expectation Measures on Therapeutic Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis

Client pre-treatment expectations have a significant impact on psychotherapy outcome, therapeutic alliance, and attendance. Client expectations are thought to account for approximately 11-14% of variance in premature termination from psychotherapy. However, measures that conflate treatment beliefs and distinct measurement techniques for the same outcome construct obscure the relationship between expectations and psychotherapy outcomes. Clarifying these associations is necessary to support development of useful methods and processes that support client retention in evidence-based treatments. With drop-out rates of approximately 20% across treatment settings, and as high as 69.4% in psychology training clinics, risk of attrition is a significant liability to effective treatment. The meta-analytic findings presented herein clarify the association of pre-treatment expectations with psychotherapy outcome, considering competing definitions for client expectations and discrepant psychotherapy outcome measurement. Implications for attrition, treatment outcomes, and therapeutic alliance are discussed.

Awareness, Inclusivity, and Action in Western Historical Museums

Dominant narratives in western historical museums often evoke a nostalgia for a Western Frontier that did not actually exist in the United States. Many Western historical museums, in particular, preserve nostalgia of an imagined Western Frontier through narratives of white masculine heroism, by featuring objects and artifacts symbolizing American exceptionalism and conquest, and by developing a sensory experience in exhibits to recreate an idealized time in history. As our understandings of history evolve, it is increasingly more evident that there is a significant need for Western historical museums as knowledge producers to shift narratives in exhibits from the dominant white-settler perspective. An integration of different value systems, cultures, practices, and beliefs in exhibits is possible by incorporating a diversity of thought in the frameworks used to interpret history, through the inclusion of diverse stories, and through creating accessible exhibits to reach a broader public audience.

"Untune the Sky": Ten Original Pieces for Microtonal Viola da Gamba with Voice and Electronics

Untune the Sky is a collection of ten original preludes, dances, and songs for microtonal viola da gamba in 7-limit just intonation with voice and live electronics that incorporates elements of Baroque music, traditional Irish dance music, extended just intonation tuning theory, and live electronic audio processing techniques. This thesis thoroughly describes the work and contextualizes its relationship to its historical and contemporary influences. The first sections explain why extended just intonation and viola da gamba were chosen as the central elements of the work. This is followed by a description of the structure, instrumentation, notational conventions, and intended performance practice of the work. The final section contains a musical analysis of the form, harmony, and structure of each piece in the collection. For researchers and interested performers, Appendix A contains a brief catalog of existing microtonal viol repertoire listed with a description of the microtonal techniques used.
