This report was prepared by Battelle-Northwest under Contract No. AT(45-1)-1830 for the Atomic Energy Commission, Division of Reactor Development and Technology, to summarize technical progress made in the Fast Flux Test Facility Program during October 1969.

Partial abstract: "The objective of the investigation reported herein was to obtain laboratory response data for deep, two-way-reinforced and plain concrete slabs subjected to static overpressures in order to determine the response analysis necessary to analyze the target vulnerability of such structures under both active and passive defense situations" (p. 4).

An electronic computing gage with IBM card punch was found to be a practical system for monitoring the critical steps in the crimping process of the assembly of some parts. In the crimping process a plastic part is compressed into a metal cup to obtain an assembled component without gaps. Dimensional data of the plastic part and metal cup are recorded on a printed tape and on IBM cards, which are used to program a computer to calculate the standard deviation of the lot. Lot acceptance is statistical and is based on the standard deviation of the lot. The electronic computing gage compares the height of the assembled components before and after crimping and indicates whether or not an acceptable assembly (without gaps) has been made. This system eliminates the need for the manual calculation of height and recording of data at the production site, thereby increasing the reliability of the assembly process at a decrease in cost.

This Systems Study is submitted in accordance with the requirements of AEC Manual Chapter 1801, and proposes the procurement and implementation of a Plant Process Surveillance System for N Reactor. The envisioned system consists of instrumentation, data acquisition equipment, a digital computer, and input/output equipment. It is intended that the system will be a tool for reliable administration of safety limits and standards, simplification of plant operation, and reduction of operating costs by replacing the tasks of shift operations personnel, an instrument technician and a process engineer.
