Radiation Safety and Control Training Manual

Introduction: The Laboratory follows the recommendations of the National Committee on Radiation Protection concerning permissible exposure limits for those working with radiation. A system of controls and regulations has been established which should ensure that no person at the Laboratory will receive more than the permissible exposure. This manual is intended to provide the minimum background necessary for intelligent cooperation with the regulations.

A Manual of Experiments in Reactor Physics (open access)

A Manual of Experiments in Reactor Physics

Nuclear processes are random in character, and, accordingly, are amenable to statistical treatment. In 1905, shortly after the discover of natural radioactivity, E. Von Schweldler showed that the analytical description of the decay distribution of radioactive substances followed from probability considerations regardless of the mechanism involved in the process of atomic disintegration.

Generalized Heat Conduction Code for the IBM-7090 Computer (open access)

Generalized Heat Conduction Code for the IBM-7090 Computer

The IBM-70% code GHT has been programmed for the 7090computer, to be run under control of the IBM-7090 FORTAN Monitor System. By eliminating the use of tapes for intermediate number storage, it has been possible to reduce computing time by a factor of 26 over the 704. A minimum of three tapes are required; one for input, one for output, and the System tape. One scratch tape is required for transient problems, and one punch tape is required if the steady-state temperature distribution is to be punched on cards.

SERVO SYSTEM FOR MAGNETIC CONTROLLED CONSTANT INTENSITY FLAT TOP BEAM SPILL- OUT (open access)

SERVO SYSTEM FOR MAGNETIC CONTROLLED CONSTANT INTENSITY FLAT TOP BEAM SPILL- OUT

It is noted that a uniform flat-top beam spill-out cannot be obtained in the Cosmotron by manual control. A servo system is proposed which will control this spill-out by sensing the external beam intensity, and correcting the magnet voltage to keep this intensity constant. This servo must operate through the transfer function of the main ignitron system and the flat-top filter. An analysis of these special transfer functions is presented. (J.R.D.)

SOME EXPERIENCES IN THE WELD FABRICATION OF REFRACTORY METALS (open access)

SOME EXPERIENCES IN THE WELD FABRICATION OF REFRACTORY METALS

Discussion is given on the welding fabrication of tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, and tantalum. Properties which make the four refractory metals important are tabulatcd along with titanium which is given for comparison. Extensive evaluation was conducted using the gas, tungsten arc welding process employing both manual and machine welding. Design data were obtained exclusively from machine welded sheet materials. Flash welding, resistance spot welding and brazing, electron beam welding, and high frequency resistance welding processes were also applied to molybdenum alloys. The oxidation of molybdenum, tantalum, and niobium in flowing air at 2000 deg F is also given. (P.C.H.)

RADIOISOTOPE TECHNIQUES FOR CHEMICAL, PHYSICAL, AND INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

A laboratory manual is given consisting of 14 experiments designed to teach some of the basic fundamentals of the application of radioisotopes, and to introduce the principles of radioisotope technology. The majority of the experiments, while designed to be practical, are planned for scientists having little background in radiochemical and radioisotopc technology, and the remainder are outlined for more advanced personnel. The experiments include isotope production, sample preparation and half life determination, radioactive decay mixture of independent decaying activities, preparation of carrier-free solutions, solubility measurements, tracer techniques by exchange kinetics, diffusion studies, determination of deposit thickness, blending efficiency, beta and liquid level gaging, special handling of radioisotopes in hot cell operations, autoradiography, engine wear studies, and decontami tion of radioactive spillage.
