Fuel Element Technical Manual
It is the purpose of the Fuel Element Technical Manual to Provide a single document describing the fabrication processes used in the manufacture of the fuel element as well as the technical bases for these processes. The manual will be instrumental in the indoctrination of personnel new to the field and will provide a single data reference for all personnel involved in the design or manufacture of the fuel element. The material contained in this manual was assembled by members of the Engineering Department and the Manufacturing Department at the Hanford Atomic Products Operation between the dates October, 1955 and June, 1956. Arrangement of the manual. The manual is divided into six parts: Part I--introduction; Part II--technical bases; Part III--process; Part IV--plant and equipment; Part V--process control and improvement; and VI--safety.

HRT-CP INSTRUMENTATION DESIGN MANUAL
The installation and design of the HRT-Core Processing Plant are described in detail so that operation and maintenance of the plant may be made more effective. Process instruments will be described fully, but auxiliary instrumentation such as pressure gauges, rotameters, etc. will not be mentioned. Where detailed questions arise as to electrical circuitry or instrument connections, the drawings and specification sheets should be consulted. (auth)

Proposed initiating system for crash-fire prevention systems
Report presenting an initiating system designed using data obtained from full-scale experimental and accidental airplane crashes. It is designed to act rapidly and so that accidental operation is improbable. In order to provide an extra layer of safety for airplanes carrying crash-fire protection, it would be desirable to have a way to restore fuel and oil flow to the engines after the system has ceased functioning.

Equations and Procedures for Numerically Calculating the Aerodynamic Characteristics of Lifting Rotors
"Equations and procedures are presented for numerically determining the aerodynamic characteristics of lifting rotors. The equations are general and can account for stall and compressibility effects, as well as variations in hub and blade configurations, that are normally omitted from conventional analytical rotor treatments. The application of the method to solution by automatic computing machines is discussed" (p. 1).

Flight investigation of the effectiveness of an automatic aileron trim control device for personal airplanes
"A flight investigation to determine the effectiveness of an automatic aileron trim control device installed in a personal airplane to augment the apparent spiral stability has been conducted. The device utilizes a rate-gyro sensing element in order to switch an on-off type of control that operates the ailerons at a fixed rate through control centering springs. An analytical study using phase-plane and analog-computer methods has been carried out to determine a desirable method of operation for the automatic trim control" (p. 505).

Stability Limits and Burning Velocities of Laminar Hydrogen-Air Flames at Reduced Pressure
Note presenting laminar burning velocity measured at pressures of 1 atmosphere and below and critical boundary velocity gradient for flashback at pressures below 1 atmosphere over a range of compositions for hydrogen-air burner flames. Pressure exponents of 0.23 for burning velocity and 1.35 for flashback velocity gradient was found. Results regarding blowoff and general stability loop, burning velocity, relations among various combustion properties, and reaction order from pressure exponents are provided.

The Fatigue Strength of Riveted Joints and Lugs
This report deals with a number of tests on riveted joints and lugs for the primary purpose of comparing the several types of riveted joints and to study the effect of various factors on the fatigue strength of lugs. A check was made to ascertain whether or not an estimate of the fatigue life at a certain loading could be made from the dimensions of the joint and the fatigue data of the unnotched materials. Recommendations are made on the proportioning of joints to obtain better fatigue behavior.
