H. W. Laboratory manual: 100 Area section (open access)

H. W. Laboratory manual: 100 Area section

The purpose of this manual is to present a Hazard Breakdown of all jobs normally encountered in the laboratory work of the three sections comprising the Analytic Section, Metallurgy and Control Division of the Technical Department. A Hazard Breakdown is a careful analysis of any job in which the source of possible dangers is clearly indicated for each particular step. The analysis is prepared by individuals who are thoroughly familiar with the specific job or procedure. It is felt that if the hazards herein outlined are recognized by the Laboratory personnel and the suggested safety cautions followed, the chance for injury will be minimized and the worker will become generally more safety conscious. The manual, which is prefaced by the general safety rules applying to all the laboratories, is divided into three main sections, one for each of the three sections into which the Laboratories Division is divided. These sections are as follows: Section 1 -- 200 Area Control; Section 2 -- 100 Area Control; Section 3 -- 300 Area Control, Essential Materials, and Methods Improvement.

An improved approximate method for calculating lift distributions due to twist (open access)

An improved approximate method for calculating lift distributions due to twist

Report presenting a method for calculating the lift distribution due to twist which gives a closer approximation than the current Schrenk empirical method and requires about the same amount of computing. The method uses the lifting-line theory and makes use of the lift distribution due to angle of attack and considers the aspect ratio of the wing. Examples are presented for four main types of twist: symmetrical, antisymmetrical, continuous, and discontinuous.

Tables of wing-aileron coefficients of oscillating air forces for two-dimensional supersonic flow

Report presenting the wing-aileron coefficients of oscillating air forces for two-dimensional supersonic flow for a variety of Mach numbers. Various ratios of control-surface chord to airfoil chord are employed in the calculation and for each combination of chord ratio and Mach number, approximate 35 values of reduced frequency are utilized.

An investigation of aircraft heaters 33: experimental determination of thermal and hydrodynamical behavior of air flowing along finned plates

Report presenting an experimental investigation on the thermal and hydrodynamical behavior of air flowing along a steam-heated plate to which were attached cylindrical fins. The data indicate that the principal criterion for the application of the equations for heat transfer along unfinned flat plates is the initiation of a thermal boundary layer.

Isentropic Phase Changes in Dissociating Gases and the Method of Sound Dispersion for the Investigation of Homogeneous Gas Reactions With Very High Speed (open access)

Isentropic Phase Changes in Dissociating Gases and the Method of Sound Dispersion for the Investigation of Homogeneous Gas Reactions With Very High Speed

The analytical results of Part I are also applied to sound dispersion by friction and heat conduction, An irreversible change of momentum, energy, and type of particle corresponding to friction, heat conduction, and diffusion effects can appear both in the direction of the sound field and traverse to it. Longitudinal damping, the coupling of longitudinal damping and that due to chemical and physical changes, and coupling of diffusion and compositional changes are treated for a plane sound wave of infinite extent.

An analysis of the normal accelerations and airspeeds of a four-engine airplane type in postwar commercial transport operations on trans-Pacific and Caribbean-South American routes

Report presenting an analysis of normal-acceleration and airspeed data on several transport airplanes of a four-engine type during postwar commerical operations on trans-Pacific and Caribbean-South American routes of the same airlines. The results indicate that the acceleration increment corresponding to the limit-gust-load-factor increment may be exceed about twice in all of the flight miles for each route. Results regarding accelerations, flight loads, gust encounters, and speeds are provided.

Effect on longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a Boeing B-29 airplane of variations in stick-force and control-rate characteristics obtained through use of a booster in the elevator-control system (open access)

Effect on longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a Boeing B-29 airplane of variations in stick-force and control-rate characteristics obtained through use of a booster in the elevator-control system

A longitudinal stability and control characteristics of a Boeing B-29 airplane have been measured with a booster incorporated in the elevator-control system. Tests were made to determine the effects on the handling qualities of the test airplane of variations in the pilot's control-force gradients as well as the effects of variations in the maximum rate of control motion supplied by the booster. The results of the control-rate investigation indicate that large airplanes may have satisfactory handling qualities with the booster adjusted to give much lower rates of control motion than those normally used by pilots.

Preparation of Ductile Zirconium: Progress Report for January 1950 (open access)

Preparation of Ductile Zirconium: Progress Report for January 1950

Abstract: A new feeder chute on the continuous casting apparatus, and the use of outgassed zirconium chips resulted in a stable arc and quiet pool. Ingots up to 9 1/2 inches in length were made, and some correlation between tension on the ingot and the "necking" effect was determined. Conversions of zirconium iodide to zirconium in the arc dissociation apparatus ran from 41 to 48.2 percent with a maximum of 474 grams of metal produced in 4 hours.
