Pressure-sensitive system for gas-temperature control (open access)

Pressure-sensitive system for gas-temperature control

From Summary: "A thermodynamic relation is derived and simplified for use as a temperature-limiting control equation involving measurement of gas temperature before combustion and gas pressures before and after combustion. For critical flow in the turbine nozzles of gas-turbine engines, the control equation is further simplified to require only measurements upstream of the burner. Hypothetical control systems are discussed to illustrate application of the control equations."

Tables of Hypergeometric Functions for Use in Compressible-Flow Theory (open access)

Tables of Hypergeometric Functions for Use in Compressible-Flow Theory

"In the hodograph method of treating plane potential compressible flows the differential equation, originally obtained by Chaplygin in his study on gas jets, plays a significant role. This paper tabulates various hypergeometric functions which arise as particular solutions of Chaplygin's differential equation. The tables should prove useful in the tabulation of other auxiliary functions which may arise in various compressible-flow problems. The adiabatic index for air has been taken as 1.4" (p. 1).

From Introduction: "In the present paper, the variation of effective gust velocity in convective-type clouds with altitude is investigated. Data obtained during 1941 and 1942 at altitudes up to 34,000 feet and data obtained more recently from the Thunderstorm Project (reference 5) at altitudes up to 26,000 feet are utilized for this purpose. Consideration is given in analyzing the results both to data for the range

An analysis of the airspeeds and normal accelerations of Boeing B-247 and B-247D airplanes in commercial transport operation

From Introduction: "The results of analyses of V-G data given in references 1 to 5 have shown that the flight loads of airplanes operated in commercial transport service are influenced by operating speeds and by forecasting and dispatching practices as reflected in differences between operations during the prewar and wartime periods. The available data are summarized and the flight results are compared with the results of analyses made in references 1 to 5."

Effect of Variables in Welding Technique on the Strength of Direct-Current Metal-Arc-Welded Joints in Aircraft Steel 2 - Repeated-Stress Tests of Joints in SAE 4130 Seamless Steel Tubing

"A series of tests were made for the purposes of establishing the effects of several variables in welding technique on the fatigue strength of arc-welded joints in SAE 4130 seamless steel tubing. The variables included type of electrode, speed of welding, current, position, amount of preheat, and other factors which in turn controlled the weld contour, penetration, and depth of the heat-affected zone. A range of joint design was also investigated" (p. 1).

Electronics progress report, December 1--31, 1948

Equipment and supplies are being packed for moving to Mound Laboratory. Work was started on the development of a cathode-follower circuit to match a B-wall tube to its connecting cable. The final report and maintenance manual for the scaler-multiplier are almost finished. The 10 millivolt Speedomax recorder used by Group 3 in the study of electrodeposition potentials has been replaced with a 150 millivolt Speedomax, utilizing two recording points for simultaneous recording of radioactive deposition and the plating cell current. Three two-input B-wall mixers, three scaler-multipliers, one four-input Geiger-Mueller mixer and five Thyratron heater controls were delivered to Group 24. One high-current plating control, EL-173, was delivered to Group 17. The following instruments are complete: portable pulse generator, EL-261, the instruction book and photographs will be submitted for approval at an early date. Portable regulation checker, EL-258. Preliminary tests have been made, instructions are being written and drawings are being made.
