The infrared spectra of spiropentane methylenecyclobutane and 2-methyl-1-butene
The infrared spectra of spiropentane, methylenecyclobutane, and 2-methyl-1-butene were measured in the region from 3 to 14 microns with a rock salt prism spectrometer of medium dispersion. The pure samples were prepared at the NACA Cleveland Laboratory. The vapors of these three C5 hydrocarbons were investigated at room temperature and at pressures in the range from 80 to 300 millimeters of mercury absolute in a 10-centimeter cell. The spectra were compared with each other and with Ramon spectra for the same compounds.

Several previously published reports on a comprehensive investigation of a thermal ice-prevention system for a typical twin-engine transport airplane are correlated with some unpublished data to present the entire investigation in one publication. Several previously published reports on a comprehensive investigation of a thermal ice-prevention system for a typical twin-engine transport airplane are correlated with some unpublished data to present the entire investigation in one publication. The thermal system investigated was based upon the transfer of heat from the engine exhaust gas to air, which is then caused to flow along the inner surface of any portion of the airplane for which protection is desired.

The Determination of Tuballoy in the Presence of Thorium in Peroxide Effluents and Cakes
Abstract: "A polarographic method for the determination of tuballoy in thorium peroxide cakes in all sold medium was found to give satisfactory results. Fluorescent analyses on effluents containing thorium gave good results if the thorium content was kept below 1 mg/liter."

Protective measures for personnel
This document addresses radiation protection concerns for workers in the experimental laboratories and production plants where nuclear fission piles are being used. A broad in-depth discussion is provided based with the experiences gained in the Manhattan Project and being applied to contemporary activities. Discussion is thorough and encompasses control of external irradiations including alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron radiations; and control of radioactivity within the body by control of inhalation, ingestion, and entrance through skin or wounds. General measures for the control of radiation hazards is addressed by provision of clothing and waste disposal. An Appendix 1 is entitled General Rules and Procedures Concerning Activity Hazards.

The Chelate Process I
The chelate process for the extraction and decontamination of plutonium has been investigated. The process is designed as an alternate process for ihe Hanford type operation. The basic chemical factors have been studied and two flowsheeis have been developed and tested for recovery of plutonium. An over-all yield of plutonium in excess of 99% is reported for one flowsheet using benzene as the organic solvent and 98.5% when toluene was substituted for benzene. The general factors involved in establishing all details of the flowsheets are thoroughly discussed and decontamination studies are indicated to complete the study in the present equipment. (auth)

LIQUID THERMAL DIFFUSION
A revised and expanded version of NNES-DC-1. The liquid thermal diffusion method for the separation of isotopes is described. The discussion includes the experimental aspects of the method, description of equipment, and the theoretical aspects of the process as applied to the design, development, and performance criteria. A short history of the liquid thermal diffusion method from 1940 to 1945 is preserted along; with a survey of relevant literature prior to 1940. Simple and Compound Meter: An Historical Investigation of Their Differences and an Experimental Investigation of Their Current Significance
It was this writer's problem to determine which of these two contentions is correct; i.e., to find out whether or not it is possible for a person to perceive a difference in 2/4 and 4/4 meters by listening to the accents. It was felt that a large group of college music students and faculty members should provide satisfactory subjects for this experiment. If, as a result of this experiment, it was found that these trained musicians could actually discriminate between the simple meter and its compound with any marked degree of consistency, it would then be admitted that the difference in the two meters is important. If, however, it was found that even musicians, who knew the technical distinctions between 2/4 and 4/4, could not really hear the difference in the two when the music was played by competent performers, it would then be contended that no important difference exists.

Ground-Stand Cooling Investigation of an R-2600-22 Engine in a PBM-3D Nacelle

Ditching Tests of a 1/9-Size Model of the Army P-38 Airplane in Langley Tank No. 2 and at the Outdoor Catapult
"A dynamically similar model of the Army P-38 airplane was tested to determine the best way to land this airplane on the water and to determine its probable ditching performance. The tests consisted of ditching the model at various landing attitudes, flap settings, speeds, weights, and conditions of simulated damage. The model was ditched in calm water from the tank towing carriage and a few ditching were made in both calm and rough water at the outdoor catapult" (p. 1).

Ditching Tests of a 1/8-Scale Model of the Navy SB2c-1 Airplane (Army A-25) in Langley Tank Number 2 and on an Outdoor Catapult
Report presenting testing to determine the best way to land the SB2C-1 airplane in calm and rough water and to determine its probable ditching performance. The behavior of the model was determined by making visual observations and by recording the maximum longitudinal decelerations and by taking motion pictures of the ditchings. Results regarding the effect of flaps, attitude, weight, a wing-low landing, effect of simulated damage, effect of tail wheel, ditching aids, and seaway are provided.
