Reference Manual For KICK IBM Program

This reference manual describes the IBM 704 program called Kick, by which complete bubble chamber events are kinematically analyzed. Kick's input data is the output from the Pang program, which uses raw track measurements to spatially reconstruct the tracks, and fits appropriate curves to them.

The Ratio of Alpha to Beta Activity of Natural Atmospheric Radioactivity (open access)

The Ratio of Alpha to Beta Activity of Natural Atmospheric Radioactivity

Abstract: The alpha to beta ratio of naturally occurring radioactivity in the air has been investigated. The study has concerned itself primarily with radon daughter products collected on filter-paper samples from the time equilibrium has been established on the paper through elapsed times during which radioactive counting is normally accomplished. Calculations showing the change in this ratio of activities during the above period are presented. From this work it appears that the observed constancy of ratio does have theoretical justification and that departures in alpha-to-beta ratio would be a usable approach to the detection of long-lived alpha or beta radioisotopes in the atmosphere.

Off-Gas Treatment in Berkeley Enclosures

"In the past ten years quantities of alpha-, beta-, gamma- and neutron-emitting isotopes handled in enclosures have increased from microcuries to kilocuries. Contaminated-atmosphere problems have increased accordingly. Developments at Berkeley are reviewed with particular emphasis on recent equipment, viz: a multiple-purpose gas scrubber and a total-capture system for slug-dissolver off gas."

Laboratory Production of Fine Grain Nuclear Emulsion (open access)

Laboratory Production of Fine Grain Nuclear Emulsion

Abstract: "Nuclear emulsion has been made in a manner similar to that of Demers and of Perfilov. An attempt has been made to achieve the grain size and sensitivity of Perflov's type P-9 Sensitive emulsion. Silver bromide grain sizes of essentially the same average size as Perfilov's were made from precipitations carried out over a narrow range of pAg's. Three brands of gelatin were tried. High sensitivity has not been achieved."

The Scattering of 31.8 Mev Protons by Protons Using Proportional Counter Detectors

The basic experiment consists of causing a beam of protons to impinge upon an accumulation of relatively stationary protons (hydrogen gas) and to measure the number of protons scattered as a function of the scattering angle. A description of the arrangement and alignment of equipment with the 32-Mev beam of the Berkeley linear accelerator is included. The data have been analyzed statistically and results have been indicated.

An Investigation of Temperature Measuring Techniques for Use in High Power Density Nuclear Reactors (open access)

An Investigation of Temperature Measuring Techniques for Use in High Power Density Nuclear Reactors

Abstract: "Temperature measuring techniques for application to temperatures up to 2000 deg C have been investigated. Emphasis has been placed on those methods suitable for use in the environment of a high power density nuclesr reactor of particular design. A survey of available techniques is made and evaluated in the light of the general problem. The properties and behavior of materials at high temperatures and in a high flux of particle radiation are discussed. As a result of the preceding considerations and a comprehensive literature search thermoelectric thermometry emerges as the most favorable method. A discussion of thermoelectric thermometry is given and recommendations as to materials and construction of a proposed expedient thermocouple are given. An experimental program leading to a more satisfactory thermocouple assembly is discussed."
