Reference Manual For KICK IBM Program (open access)

Reference Manual For KICK IBM Program

This reference manual describes the IBM 704 program called Kick, by which complete bubble chamber events are kinematically analyzed. Kick's input data is the output from the Pang program, which uses raw track measurements to spatially reconstruct the tracks, and fits appropriate curves to them.

The Scattering of 31.8 Mev Protons by Protons Using Proportional Counter Detectors (open access)

The Scattering of 31.8 Mev Protons by Protons Using Proportional Counter Detectors

The basic experiment consists of causing a beam of protons to impinge upon an accumulation of relatively stationary protons (hydrogen gas) and to measure the number of protons scattered as a function of the scattering angle. A description of the arrangement and alignment of equipment with the 32-Mev beam of the Berkeley linear accelerator is included. The data have been analyzed statistically and results have been indicated.

Electron-Electron Coincidence Spectrometer BRS-IV (open access)

Electron-Electron Coincidence Spectrometer BRS-IV

This report summarizes the original construction and recent modifications of the electron-electron coincidence spectrometer BRS-IV located in Building 70 of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. In addition to new information on the modified spectrometer, this report also contains a large amount of material taken from two previous UCRL reports.

The T3 (p, y) He4 Reaction (open access)

The T3 (p, y) He4 Reaction

The excitation function for the reaction T3 (p, y) He4 has been extended to proton energies of 7.3 Mev. No experimental evidence is found for a resonance in the reaction up to this energy of bombarding protons.

Use Of Pyroelectric Devices For Measuring Small Temperature Changes (open access)

Use Of Pyroelectric Devices For Measuring Small Temperature Changes

A technique for measuring extremely small temperature changes by means of a pyroelectric device is described. The sensing element is a short thin rod of polarized barium titanate ceramic with electrodes on the ends. The electric charges produced by changes in temperature are measured by a vibrating-reed electrometer. A number of calorimetric and noncalorimetric applications for the device are suggested.

Exponential Signal Rate-Of-Rise Measurement Instrument

The increasing exponential function e-at [a > 0] characterizes such natural events as gas discharges, neutron multiplication, and the transistor avalanche phenomenon. This report describes an instrument for measuring the rate of rise, a, of an increasing electrical exponential signal.

A Preliminary Investigation Of The System Time Spread For Some Types Of Multiplier Phototubes

A preliminary investigation of four types of multiplier phototubes under conditions simulating their use in scintillation and Cerenkov nuclear detectors is described. The investigation involves time-spread and rise-time measurements at different reference points on the outpost pulses, as well as observations of some special characteristics of these tubes.

Investigation Of Windows And Shields For Neutron Point Sources (open access)

Investigation Of Windows And Shields For Neutron Point Sources

An empirical approach for the evaluation of shielding materials for macrochemical manipulations of spontaneously fissioning heavy elements (curium and californium) has revealed interesting comparisons. High-density metal halide solutions were compared with lead glass and with rare earth glass for use as shielding windows. Laminated shields of lead-paraffin and uranium-paraffin were compared with water and with paraffin for shielding walls.

Data Processing For Bubble Chambers (open access)

Data Processing For Bubble Chambers

The computer program which performs spatial reconstruction of events photographed in a bubble chamber is required to eliminate human and digitizer errors. It recognizes and corrects for single nuclear scatterings in the presence of multiple Coulomb scatterings. Momentum components are determined and kinematic constraints are applied. Measured parameters are performed into special reference frames and quantities of physical interest are calculated. Results are stored in a tape file containing all events of one reaction type.

Comparative Costs Of Sea Disposal And Land Burial For The Radioactive Wastes Of The Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (open access)

Comparative Costs Of Sea Disposal And Land Burial For The Radioactive Wastes Of The Lawrence Radiation Laboratory

This report is a comparative cost study of radioactive waste disposal for the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (UCRL). In particular, it compares the costs of sea disposal in depths of 1000 fathoms and of 2000 fathoms off the California coast with land burial of the wastes at the Hanford Atomic Products Operation (HAPO), Richland, Washington, at the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS), Idaho Falls, Idaho, or at the Nevada Test Site (NTS), Nevada. In the comparison, the cost of utilizing a commercial waste-disposal firm is also shown as well as a tentative cost of using the Military Sea Transport Service (MSTS).
