Servo System for Magnetic Controlled Constant Intensity Flat Top Beam Spill-Out (open access)

Servo System for Magnetic Controlled Constant Intensity Flat Top Beam Spill-Out

A uniform intensity flat top spill-out cannot be obtained by manual control for two reasons: 1. The horizontal density of the internal beam of the Cosmotron is far from uniform. As a result, a manually controlled linear motion of the internal beam into a target will result in a non-uniform spill-out intensity. 2. Stability requirements of the Cosmotron magnet voltage are not easily met without feedback because of inherent component stability. The proposed servo system will sense the external beam intensity, and correct the magnet voltage to keep this intensity constant. This servo must operate through the transfer function of the main ignitron system and the flat top filter. Both of those transfer functions impose special problems.

The Magnetic Road: A New Form of Transport (open access)

The Magnetic Road: A New Form of Transport

A study is made of the technical and economic feasibility of a frictionless magnetic suspension generated by superconductors for transportation. Experiments relating to the suspension are described. A conceptual design is presented where vehicles suspended by magnetic interaction with two small insulated superconducting rails carry passengers and freight in vacuum tunnels at 600-1000 mph or in air at 200-300 mph. Other applications are possible, particularly for spacecraft and aircraft launching. Potential improvements are suggested to reduce the estimated cost of $700,000 per mile, among these is the use of cheap normal conducting sodium rail.

Beam Current Integrator (open access)

Beam Current Integrator

The object of this report is to acquaint the operator with the operational and technical aspects of the beam current integrator as well as the theory of the system operation. The design and operation of a beam current integrator are described, and the theory of operation is discussed. The instrument has two channels. The console channel is designed to measure the accumulation of charge received by a target during a period of a day no matter what the range used in the experimenter's channel. An analysis indicated that this unit will measure the accumulation of charge by a target to an accuracy of 0.1215% assuming that the constant error due to shorting the integrating capacitor is accounted for. The instrument is ranged to handle from 0.5 to 500 mu a of beam current. (M.C.G.)

Past Decimal Counting with Binary-Decimal Logic

Speed limits of decimal counting schemes based on binary-to-decimal conversion are considered. A simple "1-2-4-8" decimal logic is described, which is inherently as fast as the basic bistable. A decade for counting in 100-200 Mc/sec range, based on this logic and the tunnel diode-transistor bistable, is presented.

Mathematics of Intermittent Irradiation (open access)

Mathematics of Intermittent Irradiation

Initiation of reactions by intermittent irradiation is frequently encountered in physical, chemical, and biological systems. Mathematical expressions for transient and steady state concentrations of reactive species in these systems are useful for predicting performance and for research purposes. A general method of formulation of the intermittent irradiation problem is presented herein, and illustrative solutions are obtained for radioactive decay chains and for the rotating sector method.

Transport of FissionProducts Through the Soil Following Injection From a Well and Methods Used for Removal

In the summer of 1960 one of the little used wells on the Brookhaven National Laboratory site became accidentally contaminated with radioactive material.
