SNAP AEROSPACE SAFETY PROGRAM. Quarterly Technical Progress Report, October-December 1962 (open access)

SNAP AEROSPACE SAFETY PROGRAM. Quarterly Technical Progress Report, October-December 1962

Progress made during the period is reported including analyses of experiments and tests, and evaluation of effort. The subject material concerns reactor transient and excursion tests, fission product release studies, end-of- life shutdown devices, critical configuration studies, mechanical and thermochemical effects, reactor separation and fuel element ejection, and reentry burnup of fuel elements. The design of the SNAPTRAN 2/10A-1 and -2 machines was essentially completed and fabrication of major components was initiated. The fission product release tests at the NRTS were completed. Some progress was made on the explosive shutdown projectile design. A practical shipping sleeve design was demonstrated which will maintain the SNAP 2/10A assembly in a subcritical condition as a result of postulated shipping accidents. The Phase I ground test series were completed. The computer code, RESTORE, was shown to be excellent for the calculation of reentry trajectories. The calculation of fuel rod heating and ablation using a digital thermal analyzer program resulted in an improved and more elaborate analytical model. (auth)

Spert Project. Quarterly Technical Report for April, May, June 1959 (open access)

Spert Project. Quarterly Technical Report for April, May, June 1959

SPERT I: The characteristics of the boiling process and its relatin to moderator expulsion in Spert I were investigated in a series of capsule type experiments. A fuel-bearing oapsule, instrumented to provide pressure, volume, and temperature data during transient power excursions, was placed in a high flux region of the Spert I P core. Five step-induced transients initiated from boiling indicate that the kinetic behavior of the stainless steel clad P-18/19 core is dependent on initial temperature in a manner similar to that of previously tested aluminum clad spert cores. Reactivity oscillator techniques were used in the P-18/19 core to determine the phase and magnitude of the reactivity-to-power transfer function from 0.01 to 18.4 cps at low power and at temperatures below boiling. Criticality data on relatively simple lattices, both rod-free and containing a single poison rod, were obtained from a series of clean critical experiments performed on a number of light water-moderated and - reflected slab configurations of Spert III fuel elements. Changes in water height during the critical water height experiment were measured to plus or minus 0.0013 inches by means of a simple remoteindicating system designed and built for this purpose. SPERT III: The operational loading was …

Precision Grinding of Diallyl Phthalate Thermosetting Plastic (open access)

Precision Grinding of Diallyl Phthalate Thermosetting Plastic

A semiautomatic grinder was designed and built at Mound Laboratory to grind molded plastic detonator heads to close tolerances. It uses a vertical spindle, dry grinding technique to decrease grinding time of some diallyl phthalate (DAP) detonator heads with wire inserts and to eliminate the problem of error in repeatability which is characteristic of the manual grinding process. The semiautomatic grinder is essentially air-operated with electrical control and was primarily designed using standard components for ease of manufacture and maintenance. As development of the semiautomatic grinder progressed, DAP detonator heads with wire inserts ground using the manual surface grinder were evaluated along with the same type of detonator heads ground using the semiautomatiac grinder. Also, a time study was conducted to determine the cost savings of grinding miniature DAP detonator heads with wire inserts using the semiautomatic grinder. Inspection and analytical results and radiographic sections of ground detonator head surfaces from each grinding technique indicated that the semiautomatic grinding technique provides acceptable ground DAP detonator heads with wire inserts at a cost savings of 83.5% and a significant reduction in grinding time.

Activities of the radiation safety program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the period 1960-1962 are described. A reduction in the frequency of radiation accidents was observed and a training program for technical and nontechnical personnel has been formulated. Sixteen facilities were improved to ensure safe operation at a cost of approximately 388,589.
