An Evaluation of Four Processes for Recovering Uranium From Zirconium Fuels at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant

Four zirconium fuel processes -the present STR process, the modified Zirflex process, the barium fluorzirconate process, and the sodium formate process-were evaluated in detail for technical and economic feasibility. The evaluation was based on installation as the second generation ldaho Chemical Processing Plant zirconium process. Two nonaqueous processes, the ARCO and the fused salt fluoride volatility processes, were included in a preliminary evaluation, but were eliminated on the basis that major problems inherent in the processes are not yet solved. A continuous version of the STR process was concluded to be the leading contender for rmmediate plant applicator. (auth)

Separation of Neptunium and Plutonium By Anion Exchange (open access)

Separation of Neptunium and Plutonium By Anion Exchange

The separation of neptunium and plutonium by anion exchange in nitrate solutions was studied under a wide variety of experimental conditions. A method of separation was developed that is adaptable to remote operation in the plant. In the method, Np(IV) and Pu(IV) are absorbed on an anion exchange resin from 8M nitrate solution. The column is washed with 8M HNO/sub 3/ to remove contaminants; then the Pu is removed as Pu(III) by washing the column with HNO/ sub 3/ containing ferrous sulfamate and hydrazine. Finally, the Np is eluted with dilute HNO/sub 3/. (auth)

Crystallographic D-Space Computer Program

D-Space is a computer program which generates indices (hld), tests for space-group extinctions, and calculates d,'' 1/d/sup 2/, sin theta , sin/sup 2/ theta , sin theta / lambda , sin/sub 2/ theta / lambda /sup 2/, theta , and 2 theta for any crystal system and space group, requiring only the unit cell constants as data input. Optional calculations are the single-crystal angle settings, phi and chi, and various Lorentz and Lorentz-polarization corrections. (auth)

Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, October 1961

Additional runs were made in the 6-in.-dia. separation column. The kinetics of the methane --copper oxide reaction was investigated in deep bed tests. The work on the development of the shear included a satisfactory method of ng, preliminary test of an outer gag faced with rubber, and a metallic inner gsg contoured to the shape of a sheared assembly. The mechanical dejacketing of the SRE Core I fuel, NaK-bonded, stainless steel-clad uranium slugs, was successfully completed. The effective therrnal conductivity of a packed bed of 0.023-in. steel shot was approximately 0.33 Btu/hr- deg Fft at 200 deg F. Flow capacity for the compound extraction scrub column equipped with sieve plates (0.125-in.-dia. was determined. Average waste calcination rates for Purex were higher by a factor of 1.5 to 2.0 than rates for TBP-25. (auth)

Nuclear Bomb Effects Computer, (Including Slide-Rule Design and Curve Fits for Weapons Effects) (open access)

Nuclear Bomb Effects Computer, (Including Slide-Rule Design and Curve Fits for Weapons Effects)

S>Based on data from the 1962 edition of The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, a circular slide rule was designed to evaluate 28 different effects of nuclear weapons. Of these 28 different effects, 13 relate to blast, 5 to thermal radiation, 1 to initial nuclear radiation, 2 to early fallout, 6 to crater dimensions, and 1 to fireball dimensions. Most of the parameters are presented as functions of range and yield (1 kt to 20 Mt). Techniques are described which make it possible to estimate most of the effects parameters for yields greater than 20 Mt or smaller than 1 kt. The report presents curve fits of weapons- effects data, design analysis for the slide rule, and instructions for use of the rule along with some of the implications of the data in regard to biological and structural damage. The machine techniques are mentioned which were used to prepare the original graphs necessary for the production of the slide rule. (auth)
