Argus glass laser target alignment system

Proper laser infrared irradiation of ball targets 10 to 100 ..mu..m in diameter requires micrometre-step positioning of the system's optical elements. A central control console has been designed that gives the operator nearly complete control of this complex operation. Twin alignment lasers can be operated from the console. Devices can be inserted in the beam lines, mirrors moved, and the target ball aligned, all with fine precision. The focus position can be viewed by closed-circuit TV monitors; disk recording of the TV waveforms is available. The main capacitor banks can be charged for rod shots. Communications with laser operators can be maintained by intercom or radio, and video signals can be sent to remote areas. The console has been instrumental in saving many hours of manual labor.

Process Development for Oxidative Destruction of Tetraphenylborate in SRS Tk48H

This report documents the results of an Savannah River Technical Center (SRTC) proposal concerning Tank 48H. Tank 48H is a ''unique tank waste that poses problematic operational processes for which there is no available technology''. These experiments help develop a process for destroying Tank 48H's ''legacy tetraphenylborate organic waste''. Tank 48H will serve as the feed tank for the Actinide Removal Process, which will treat low curie waste. The main objective of the research is to develop processing conditions for the safe destruction of the organic present in Tank 48H and facilitate return of the tank to routine high level waste service by August 2005. SRTC examined processing conditions using non-radioactive, simulated waste. For those processes that prove most attractive, personnel will later demonstrate process viability through pilot scale and actual waste testing.

A DISCIPLINED APPROACH TO ACCIDENT ANALYSIS DEVELOPMENT AND CONTROL SELECTION

The development and use of a Safety Input Review Committee (SIRC) process promotes consistent and disciplined Accident Analysis (AA) development to ensure that it accurately reflects facility design and operation; and that the credited controls are effective and implementable. Lessons learned from past efforts were reviewed and factored into the development of this new process. The implementation of the SIRC process has eliminated many of the problems previously encountered during Safety Basis (SB) document development. This process has been subsequently adopted for use by several Savannah River Site (SRS) facilities with similar results and expanded to support other analysis activities.

New features in MEDM. (open access)

New features in MEDM.

MEDM, which is derived from Motif Editor and Display Manager, is the primary graphical interface to the EPICS control system. This paper describes new features that have been added to MEDM in the last two years. These features include new editing capabilities, a PV Info dialog box, a means of specifying limits and precision, a new implementation of the Cartesian Plot, new features for several objects, new capability for the Related Display, help, a user-configurable Execute Menu, reconfigured start-up options, and availability for Windows 95/98/NT. Over one hundred bugs have been fixed, and the program is quite stable and in extensive use.

Tevatron run-II beam collimation system (open access)

Tevatron run-II beam collimation system

Based on realistic Monte-Carlo simulations a two-stage beam collimation system is designed to minimize the beam loss in the Fermilab Tevatron for fixed target and collider Run II. Thin primary collimators are used to increase particle amplitude and their impact parameter on the down-stream secondary collimators. This results in a significant reduction of the total beam loss in the machine, decreases collimator overheating and mitigates requirements to colli-mator alignment. A set of collimators will originally be in-stalled for fixed target operation and for antiprotonbeam re-cycling studies. The collimation system improvement will continue into the collider Run II and intensity upgrade.

Visual Sample Plan Version 1.0 User's Guide

This user's guide describes Visual Sample Plan (VSP) Version 1.0 and provides instructions for using the software. VSP selects the appropriate number and location of environmental samples to ensure that the results of statistical tests performed to provide input to environmental decisions have the required confidence and performance. VSP Version 1.0 provides sample-size equations or algorithms needed by specific statistical tests appropriate for specific environmental sampling objectives. The easy-to-use program is highly visual and graphic. VSP runs on personal computers with Microsoft Windows operating systems (95, 98, Millenium Edition, 2000, and Windows NT). Designed primarily for project managers and users without expertise in statistics, VSP is applicable to any two-dimensional geographical population to be sampled (e.g., surface soil, a defined layer of subsurface soil, building surfaces, water bodies, and other similar applications) for studies of environmental quality.

Autothermal Reforming of Natural Gas to Synthesis Gas

This Project Final Report serves to document the project structure and technical results achieved during the 3-year project titled Advanced Autothermal Reformer for US Dept of Energy Office of Industrial Technology. The project was initiated in December 2001 and was completed March 2005. It was a joint effort between Sandia National Laboratories (Livermore, CA), Kellogg Brown & Root LLC (KBR) (Houston, TX) and Süd-Chemie (Louisville, KY). The purpose of the project was to develop an experimental capability that could be used to examine the propensity for soot production in an Autothermal Reformer (ATR) during the production of hydrogen-carbon monoxide synthesis gas intended for Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) applications including ammonia, methanol, and higher hydrocarbons. The project consisted of an initial phase that was focused on developing a laboratory-scale ATR capable of reproducing conditions very similar to a plant scale unit. Due to budget constraints this effort was stopped at the advanced design stages, yielding a careful and detailed design for such a system including ATR vessel design, design of ancillary feed and let down units as well as a PI&D for laboratory installation. The NPE gas tracer test and the development of on-site inspection techniques

Tracer gases emplaced in or near the detonation cavity of the 1-kiloton NonProliferation Event required 1.5 and 13.5 months for sulfur hexaflouride and helium-3, respectively, to reach the surface of Rainier Mesa from an emplacement depth of 400 meters. The sites that first produced tracer gases are those located in known faults and fractures. Numerical modeling suggests that transport to the surface is accomplished within this time frame through atmospheric pumping along high permeability pathways such as fractures. The difference in travel time between the two tracers is due to differences in gas diffusivity and can also be explained by our numerical modeling.

242-A Evaporator Waste Analysis Plan. Revision 5

This Waste Analysis Plan (WAP) provides the plan for obtaining information needed for proper waste handling and processing in the 242-A Evaporator (Evaporator) located on the Hanford Site. In particular it addresses analysis necessary to manage the waste according to Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 173-303 and Parts 264 and 265 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Regulatory and safety issues are addressed by establishing boundary conditions for waste received and treated at the 242-A Evaporator. The boundary conditions are set by establishing limits for items such as potential exothermic reactions, waste compatibility, and control of vessel vent organic emissions. Boundary conditions are also set for operational considerations and to ensure waste acceptance at receiving facilities. The issues that are addressed in this plan include prevention of exotherms in the waste, waste compatibility, and vessel vent emissions. Samples from the other streams associated with the Evaporator are taken as required by Process Control Plans but are excluded from this plan because either the streams do not contain dangerous waste or the analyses are not required by WAC 173-303-300.

Tera-scalable Algorithms for Variable-Density Elliptic Hydrodynamics with Spectral Accuracy

A hybrid spectral/compact solver for variable-density viscous incompressible flow is described. Parallelization strategies for the FFTs and band-diagonal matrices are discussed and compared. Transpose methods are found to be highly competitive with direct block parallel methods when the problem is scaled to tens of thousands of processors. Various mapping strategies for the IBM BlueGene/L torus configuration of processors are explored. By optimizing the communication, we have achieved virtually perfect scaling to 32768 nodes. Furthermore, communication rates come very close to the theoretical peak speed of the BlueGene/L network with sustained computation in the TeraFLOPS range.

Neutrons and Granite: Transport and Activation

In typical ground materials, both energy deposition and radionuclide production by energetic neutrons vary with the incident particle energy in a non-monotonic way. We describe the overall balance of nuclear reactions involving neutrons impinging on granite to demonstrate these energy-dependencies. While granite is a useful surrogate for a broad range of soil and rock types, the incorporation of small amounts of water (hydrogen) does alter the balance of nuclear reactions.

Procedure Number HNF-PRO-408, revision 0, paragraph 1.0, ''Purpose,'' and paragraph 2.0, ''Requirements for Facility Management of Asbestos,'' relate building inspection and requirements for documentation of existing asbestos-containing building material (ACBM) per each building assessment. This documentation shall be available to all personnel (including contractor personnel) entering the facility at their request. Corrective action was required by 400 Area Integrated Annual Appraisal/Audit for Fiscal Year 1992 (IAA-92-0007) to provide this notification documentation. No formal method had been developed to communicate the location and nature of ACBM to maintenance personnel in the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) 400 Area. The scope of this Data Package Document is to locate and evaluate any ACBM found at FFTF which constitutes a baseline. This includes all buildings within the protected area. These findings are compiled from earlier reports, numerous work packages and engineering evaluations of employee findings.

Shielding Calculations for NSLS-II Beamlines.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is in the process of designing a new Electron Synchrotron for scientific research using synchrotron radiation. This facility, called the 'National Synchrotron Light Source II' (NSLS-II), will provide x-ray radiation of ultra-high brightness and exceptional spatial and energy resolution. It will also provide advanced insertion devices, optics, detectors, and robotics, and a suite of scientific instruments designed to maximize the scientific output of the facility. The project scope includes the design, construction, installation, and commissioning of the following accelerators: a 200 MeV linac, a booster accelerator operating from 200 MeV to 3.0 GeV, the storage ring which stores 500 mA current of electrons at an energy of 3.0 GeV and 56 beamlines for experiments. It is planned to operate the facility primarily in a top-off mode, thereby maintaining the maximum variation in stored beam current to < 1%. Because of the very demanding requirements for beam emittance and synchrotron radiation brilliance, the beam life-time is expected to be quite low, on the order of 2 hours. Each of the 56 beamlines will be unique in terms of the source properties and configuration. The shielding designs for five representative beamlines are discussed in this paper.
