Some Natural Variations in the Relative Abundance of Copper Isotopes (open access)

Some Natural Variations in the Relative Abundance of Copper Isotopes

Abstract: "The relative isotopic abundance of copper has been measured in a number of minerals. Suites of samples from Michigan and the Colorado Plateau have been examined to determine if local variations due to isotopic exchange or diffusion could be found. The relative isotopic abundance of copper in specimens from a number of other places was also determined. The variations noted were small but in most cases were felt to be significant because they were larger than the experimental error (0.1 percent in the ratio). A total spread of +3 to -8 parts per mil compared to the standard was found in the specimens tested."

Ground-Water Contamination at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Michigan (open access)

Ground-Water Contamination at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Michigan

From introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey, at the request of the U.S. Air Force, began an investigation of geologic and hydrologic conditions at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in September 1979. The investigation was prompted by the discovery that an underground storage tank containing trichloroethylene (TCE) had leaked, contaminating Base water-supply wells. Subsequent information suggested that the trichloroethylene had moved off-Base.

Bioreactor Landfill Research and Demonstration Project Northern Oaks Landfill, Harrison, MI (open access)

Bioreactor Landfill Research and Demonstration Project Northern Oaks Landfill, Harrison, MI

A bioreactor landfill cell with 1.2-acre footprint was constructed, filled, operated, and monitored at Northern Oaks Recycling and Disposal Facility (NORDF) at Harrison, MI. With a filled volume of 74,239 cubic yards, the cell contained approximately 35,317 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) and 20,777 tons of cover soil. It was laid on the slope of an existing cell but separated by a geosynthetic membrane liner. After the cell reached a design height of 60 feet, it was covered with a geosynthetic membrane cap. A three-dimensional monitoring system to collect data at 48 different locations was designed and installed during the construction phase of the bioreactor cell. Each location had a cluster of monitoring devices consisting of a probe to monitor moisture and temperature, a leachate collection basin, and a gas sampling port. An increase in moisture content of the MSW in the bioreactor cell was achieved by pumping leachate collected on-site from various other cells, as well as recirculation of leachate from the bioreactor landfill cell itself. Three types of leachate injection systems were evaluated in this bioreactor cell for their efficacy to distribute pumped leachate uniformly: a leachate injection pipe buried in a 6-ft wide horizontal stone mound, …

Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance Basic Data for Iron Mountain NTMS Quadrangle, Michigan; Wisconsin

From abstract: Results of a reconnaissance geochemical survey of the Iron Mountain Quadrangle, Michigan; Wisconsin are reported. Field and laboratory data are presented for 479 groundwater samples, 369 stream sediment samples, and 389 stream water samples. Statistical and areal distributions of uranium and other possible uranium-related variables are displayed. A generalized geologic map of the survey area is provided, and pertinent geologic factors which may be of significance in evaluating the potential for uranium mineralization are briefly discussed.

Perceptions of Student Affairs Services by Students and Student Affairs Personnel at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan (open access)

Perceptions of Student Affairs Services by Students and Student Affairs Personnel at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of students and student affairs personnel of student affairs services at Andrews University's main campus in Berrien Springs, Michigan. A modified questionnaire, based on the work of Selgas and Blocker (1974) and Glenister (1977), was developed for this study. Eleven student services found in the Council for the Advancement of Standards for Student Services/Development Program's guidelines were included. A random sample of 280 students at Andrews University received surveys, with 165 (59%) responding. The 30 full-time student affairs personnel also received surveys, with 20 (67%) responding. Students and student affairs personnel rated their perceptions of student services, using 77 statements associated with these services. Services were rated on a 6-point scale in the categories of status of knowledge, relative importance, and effectiveness. Respondents were asked to include additional comments concerning the services and to provide biographical data. The following are some of the main findings: Significant differences between students' and student affairs personnel's status of knowledge of student services were found in career planning/employment, commuter programs/services, counseling services/substance abuse education, religious programs/services, student activities, and wellness/health. Significant differences between the two groups' perceptions of relative importance of student services were …

Analyses of Coals in the United States with Descriptions of Mine and Field Samples Collected between July 1, 1904 and June 30, 1910 Part 2. Descriptions of Samples (open access)

Analyses of Coals in the United States with Descriptions of Mine and Field Samples Collected between July 1, 1904 and June 30, 1910 Part 2. Descriptions of Samples

From Introduction: "This volume contains the descriptions of the samples whose analyses are published in the preceding volume, Part I of this bulletin. The descriptions have been compiled from the notebooks of the persons who collected the samples, have been condensed from accounts given in published reports of the United States Geological Survey, or have furnished by the collection themselves. Inasmuch as the descriptions represent the work of many persons during a period of six years, and inasmuch as they were recorded under widely differing conditions, they necessarily vary in fullness detail."

[Facsimile of Junebug Clark The Early Years scrapbook]

From Junebug Clark's introduction: "This scrapbook of the early work of Junebug Clark, was put together by Bernice Clark, my mother, and preserved by my wife, Kay Clark. The original is getting a little bit fragile and delicate so in order for you to take a gander at it, this document was created. I hope that you will have the time to set a spell and go through the pictures and stories within. It is a little bit embarrassing and unbeliveable for me to look at but after undertaking this project I have reconnected with some long lost friends and have come to realize that photography has been a big part of my life and the best part of my life. It was my start and I am forever grateful to the people named on this cover page and included in The Early Years."
