An Evaluation of Selected Woodworking Projects (open access)

An Evaluation of Selected Woodworking Projects

The primary purpose of the study is twofold: first, to develop a set of criteria that can be used effectively to evaluate projects that will develop in students those skills and concepts emphasized in the goals and objectives of industrial arts; and second, to evaluate these projects by using evaluative criteria developed for that purpose. After the completion of the study, a convenient source book of projects for teachers will be compiled.

The Effects of Preregistration Advisement of Students by a Counselor on the Choice of College Majors and Other Selected Criterion Measures (open access)

The Effects of Preregistration Advisement of Students by a Counselor on the Choice of College Majors and Other Selected Criterion Measures

The problem for consideration in this study was an investigation of the effects of two methods of preregistration advisement of junior college freshmen. Specifically, the following questions were posed. What would be the effects on college students of an individual preregistration advisement interview with a member of the professional counseling staff as compared to a group advisement session? Would the advisement interview for students produce differences in (1) the types of majors selected, (2) probabilities of success in declared educational objectives, (3) perceptions of the environment, (4) changes of major, (5) course changes, (6) failures to complete registration, (7) withdrawals during the first eight weeks of classes, and (8) number of course deficiencies reported at mid-semester? An auxiliary consideration was the following. What would be the effects of providing information about technical-occupational programs in the form of brochures?

Accounting Instruction in Public Junior (Community) Colleges in the United States (open access)

Accounting Instruction in Public Junior (Community) Colleges in the United States

The focus of this study was the status of accounting instruction in public junior (community) colleges in the United States. The purposes were: (1) to make a survey and comparison of the accounting instruction which was being offered by the four types of post-secondary public institutions as listed in the Directory of Junior Colleges, (2) to determine the extent to which specially prepared materials were being utilized, (3) to determine the methods of instruction which were being utilized, and (4) to determine the work experience and educational level of the average full-time instructor who taught accounting in these institutions. The following conclusions have been drawn from an analysis of the findings: 1. The post-secondary institutions in the United States have accepted the challenge to provide technical accounting instructional programs provided this acceptance is indicated by the number of courses in accounting offered. 2. Although the institutions reported extensive offerings of different accounting courses, the instructional materials and methods were found to be the same as those in traditional accounting classes at four-year institutions which offer only degree programs in accounting. 3. Use of the cooperative method of instruction for technical accounting students was minimal. 4. The accounting instructors employed by …

Anxiety Levels of Creative, Performing Musicians (open access)

Anxiety Levels of Creative, Performing Musicians

The term creativity will be used in this paper to denote the unique imposition of the personality upon, in this case, the instrument selected and the work performed. The result of the creativity, the performance, is in the indefinable but, to a competent judge, readily recognizable area of true artistry, and represents, at best, a spontaneity resulting from interaction with unconscious processes after the conscious mastery of the technical problems of the particular instrument. For the purposes of this study, May's definition of anxiety is as good and workable as any: "Anxiety is the apprehension cued off by a threat to some value which the individual holds essential to his existence as a personality. In the case of the musician, the threatened value is his desire (and necessity, in terms of his self concept) to pursue music as a career. When his career is threatened or depreciated, the result is anxiety, which manifests itself in various forms of irrational behavior, physical symptoms, and inadequate adjustments to everyday situations.

The Relationship between Reading Readiness and Level of Adjustment in the Intermediate Grades (open access)

The Relationship between Reading Readiness and Level of Adjustment in the Intermediate Grades

This investigation emphasized relationships between adjustment level in the intermediate grades and measures that differentiated it, or were related to it. Special attention was devoted to sex differences that might help account for the higher incidence of disturbance and school difficulty encountered by boys. Strong emphasis was given to investigating the postulation that physical inability to meet early school demands will be a frequent cause of failure and frustration, which might, in turn, precipitate a cycle of reading retardation and general underachievement.

To Determine Whether the Armed-Force Methods of Instruction and Civilian Methods of Instruction are Similar or Different

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the armed-force method of instruction and the civilian method of instruction are similar or different. The five basic steps of instruction emphasized in the armed-force bulletins receive special emphasis in this study. They are as follows: 1. Preparation by the instructor; 2. Presentation; 3. Application; 4. Examination; 5. Discussion and critique. It is with these five basic steps that the writer has endeavored to show the difference or similarity between the educational programs used in the armed forces and in the public schools.

The Effects of Multisensory Perceptual Training on Reading and Perceptual Development at the First-Grade Level

This was a study designed to investigate the effects of three independent variables in first-grade reading instruction on reading achievement and perceptual development. The independent variables included initial readiness level, type of instructional method, and sex of pupil. The major purpose of this study was to use an experimental setting to determine the relative effects of a multi-sensory perceptual training program combined with a basal-instruction program, as contrasted to an entirely conventional basal-reading program, on first-grade reading achievement and perceptual development during a school year.

An Exploration of Self-Actualization, Self Concept, Locus of Control, and other Characteristics as Exhibited in Selected Mature Community-College Women (open access)

An Exploration of Self-Actualization, Self Concept, Locus of Control, and other Characteristics as Exhibited in Selected Mature Community-College Women

This study describes certain characteristics of mature women students in a community college in a large metropolitan district. Three standardized instruments gathered data on self-actualization, self concept, and locus of control. A questionnaire collected demographic and education data as well as information on attitudes, motivations, problems encountered, and suggestions. The women perceived attitudes of their families as positive toward their education. They were motivated by desires to gain knowledge, get degrees, obtain promotions, and improve themselves. They cited themselves, long-time ambition, friends, and husbands as influential in motivating them to attend college. They selected this community college because of its convenience. The majority were married, had children, and were of the middle to upper-middle class. Over half were employed. Their average age was thirty-seven. They were active outside the home, although continuing to perform most traditionally feminine home responsibilities. The majority were part-time students, classified as freshmen. Education, business, nursing, accounting, and psychology were popular majors. Over half planned to obtain bachelor's degrees. Most felt they encountered no problems in pursuing their education; lack of sufficient time was their major complaint. Most were pleased with their community-college experience. their suggestions included special counseling, flexible class schedules, a club for mature …
