Investigation and demonstration of dry carbon-based sorbent injection for mercury control. Quarterly technical report, July 1, 1996--September 31, 1996 (open access)

Investigation and demonstration of dry carbon-based sorbent injection for mercury control. Quarterly technical report, July 1, 1996--September 31, 1996

The overall objective of this two phase program is to investigate the use of dry carbon-based sorbents for mercury control. This information is important to the utility industry in anticipation of pending regulations. During Phase I, a bench-scale field test device that can be configured as an electrostatic precipitator, a pulse-jet baghouse, or a reverse-gas baghouse has been designed, built and integrated with an existing pilot-scale facility at PSCo`s Comanche Station. Up to three candidate sorbents will be injected into the flue gas stream upstream of the test device to and mercury concentration measurements will be made to determine the mercury removal efficiency for each sorbent. During the Phase II effort, component integration for the most promising dry sorbent technology shall be tested at the 5000 acfm pilot-scale.

POC-scale testing of an advanced fine coal dewatering equipment/technique. Quarterly technical progress report, No. 4, July 1995--September 1995 (open access)

POC-scale testing of an advanced fine coal dewatering equipment/technique. Quarterly technical progress report, No. 4, July 1995--September 1995

Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 {mu}m) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This project is a step in the Department of Energy`s program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The cost-sharing contract effort is for 36 months beginning September 30, 1994. This report discusses technical progress made during the quarter from July 1 - September 29, 1995.

Dynamic Response of Reactor Plant to Load Changes. Section I. First Performance. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results DL-S-251 (T-612390) (open access)

Dynamic Response of Reactor Plant to Load Changes. Section I. First Performance. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results DL-S-251 (T-612390)

The purpose of the test was to determine the responses of the plant when subjected to load transients exceeding the design magnitudes, and to determine the maximum load changes, positive or negative, that the plant can sustain. The reactor plant responded satisfactorily to all load transients. The only limits exceed were the pressurizer high and low level alarm points. The magnitude of the transients and the time required for the plant to return to equilibrium was dependent upon the size of the the load change. The pressurizer spray was effective in reducing reactor coolant pressure positive surges; however, this resulted in larger negative surges than when the spray valve was closed.

A Parallel Controls Software Approach for PEP II: AIDA & Matlab Middle Layer (open access)

A Parallel Controls Software Approach for PEP II: AIDA & Matlab Middle Layer

The controls software in use at PEP II (Stanford Control Program - SCP) had originally been developed in the eighties. It is very successful in routine operation but due to its internal structure it is difficult and time consuming to extend its functionality. This is problematic during machine development and when solving operational issues. Routinely, data has to be exported from the system, analyzed offline, and calculated settings have to be reimported. Since this is a manual process, it is time consuming and error-prone. Setting up automated processes, as is done for MIA (Model Independent Analysis), is also time consuming and specific to each application. Recently, there has been a trend at light sources to use MATLAB as the platform to control accelerators using a 'MATLAB Middle Layer' (MML), and so called channel access (CA) programs to communicate with the low level control system (LLCS). This has proven very successful, especially during machine development time and trouble shooting. A special CA code, named AIDA (Accelerator Independent Data Access), was developed to handle the communication between MATLAB, modern software frameworks, and the SCP. The MML had to be adapted for implementation at PEP II. Colliders differ significantly in their designs compared …

Challenges of Extracting and Purifying Fission-Produced Molybdenum-99 (open access)

Challenges of Extracting and Purifying Fission-Produced Molybdenum-99

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) has produced limited quantities of fission-produced molybdenum-99 ~%lo) within industry purity specifications using the Cintichem production process. The chemical extraction and purification of `%lo was petiormed using the Hot Cell Facility (HCF) located at Technical Area-V. To thoroughly understand the production process, two series of tests were designed, the first was a series of cold tests using 20 g samples of depleted or low irradiated uranium dioxide powder and the second series was conducted using irradiated targets. In addition, radiation effects tests were petiormed at the SNL Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) on chemicals and hardware used in the processing to evaluate the degradation due to the high radiation field expected during the chemical separation. Unique production hardware, fixtures and tools were developed for remote processing of irradiated targets at the HCF.

INVESTIGATION OF A PLASMA MODE IN EBTS. (open access)

INVESTIGATION OF A PLASMA MODE IN EBTS.

A plasma related mode has been identified when EBTS operated with long trap length. The mode frequency scaling showed monotonic increased with confinement time. Initial scaling qualitatively suggested the mode to an electron beam driven ion cyclotron instability. However, a more quantitative evaluation is indicative of a drift mode. Nevertheless, the possibility of a structure mode, though unlikely, can not be completely excluded. The process of proper instability identification and stabilization is described.

Features, Events, and Processes in UZ and Transport (open access)

Features, Events, and Processes in UZ and Transport

The purpose of this report is to evaluate and document the inclusion or exclusion of the unsaturated zone (UZ) features, events, and processes (FEPs) with respect to modeling that supports the total system performance assessment (TSPA) for license application (LA) for a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. A screening decision, either ''Included'' or ''Excluded'', is given for each FEP, along with the technical basis for the screening decision. This information is required by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 10 CFR 63.114 (d, e, and f) [DIRS 156605]. The FEPs deal with UZ flow and radionuclide transport, including climate, surface water infiltration, percolation, drift seepage, and thermally coupled processes. This analysis summarizes the implementation of each FEP in TSPA-LA (that is, how the FEP is included) and also provides the technical basis for exclusion from TSPA-LA (that is, why the FEP is excluded). This report supports TSPA-LA.

20% Partial Siberian Snake in the AGS. (open access)

20% Partial Siberian Snake in the AGS.

An 11.4% partial Siberian snake was used to successfully accelerate polarized proton through a strong intrinsic depolarizing spin resonance in the AGS. No noticeable depolarization was observed. This opens up the possibility of using a 20% to 30% partial Siberian snake in the AGS to overcome all weak and strong depolarizing spin resonances. Some design and operation issues of the new partial Siberian snake are discussed.

Spin Matching From Ags to RHIC. (open access)

Spin Matching From Ags to RHIC.

With a partial Siberian snake in the AGS and transport lines with interspersed horizontal and vertical bends, the incoming spin direction at the injection points of both the collider rings is not likely to match the ideal vertical stable spin direction of RHIC which has two full helical Siberian snakes per ring. In this paper we examine the matching of a polarized beam transferred from the AGS into RHIC. The present 5% partial solenoidal snake as well as a proposed 20% superconducting helical are considered for the AGS. Solutions with retuned snakes in RHIC to better match the incoming beam have been found.

Portable code development in C (open access)

Portable code development in C

With a new generation of high performance computers appearing around us on a time scale of months, a new challenge for developers of simulation codes is to write and maintain production codes that are both highly portable and maximally efficient. My contention is that C is the language that is both best suited to that goal and is widely available today. GLF is a new code written mainly in C which is intended to have all of the XRASER physics and run on any platform of interest. It demonstrates the power of the C paradigm for code developers and flexibility and ease of use for the users. Three fundamental problems are discussed: the C/UNIX development environment; the supporting tools and libraries which handle data and graphics portability issues; and the advantages of C in numerical simulation code development.

First Polarized Proton Collisions at RHIC. (open access)

First Polarized Proton Collisions at RHIC.

We successfully injected polarized protons in both RHIC rings and maintained polarization during acceleration up to 100 GeV per ring using two Siberian snakes in each ring. Each snake consists of four helical superconducting dipoles which rotate the polarization by 180{sup o} about a horizontal axis. This is the first time that polarized protons have been accelerated to 100 GeV.
