Interim report, Poison splines flexible control system

This report discusses a system which has been conceived whereby additional flexible reactivity control in the production reactors can be achieved by introducing neutron absorbers contained in thin flexible metal strips between the slugs and the process tube wall. These splines are potentially attractive in that it is possible they could be used to provide additional flexible control during operation as well as temporary control during outages.

Neutron-Flux Measurements in a Flat Plate Fuel Element (open access)

Neutron-Flux Measurements in a Flat Plate Fuel Element

The equipment and experiments performed to measure the thermal-neutron- flux distribution in a fuel assembly of an experimental loop mock-up of a gas:cooled reactor at the Battelle Research Reactor (BRR) are described. The loop was located adjacent to the core of the BRR and contained one fuel assermbly composed of seven flat fuel plates each containing approximately 29.5 g of U/sup 235/. The plates consisted of a core 0.050 in. thick of UO/sub 2/ dispersed in Type 347 stainless steel and clad on each side with 0.005 in. of Type 347 stainless steel. The measurements showed that with the present design of the loop system an average thermal-neutron flux of 4.09 x 1O/sup 12/ neutrons/(cm/sup 2/)(sec) or a power generation of 45 kw in the assembly can be conveniently obtained. The ratio of the peak thermal-neutron flux to average thermal flux in the entire element was found to be 1.87. At any horizontal cross section, thermal-flux depression from the edge of the element to the center of less than a factor of two was observed for the final loopcore arrangement. (auth)

HRT Reactor Hazards (open access)

HRT Reactor Hazards

Several potential hazards that have been recognized and anticipated in the design and fabrication of the pressure vessel in the Homogeneous Reactor Test are discussed. These hazards results from the high operating pressure and temperature of the reactor, the exposure of the reactor vessel material to potential embrittlement and other affects of fast-neutron irradiation, and the need for containment of corrosive flowing liquids. The steps taken in recognition of these hazards are also discussed. The applicability of present codes to the reactor vessel fabrication is considered. Additional fields are suggested where recommended practices developed by code writing bodies could assist in development-type reactor design and fabrication.

Experimental Investigation of Modified Cast-Cored Blades Having Hollow Tip Sections

Memorandum presenting the development of fabrication techniques to provide cast-cored turbine blades with hollow tip sections. Two types of modified cast-cored blades that provided an 11-percent weight reduction from a fully cast-cored blade and a 13-percent weight reduction from a standard uncooled blade were investigated in a turbojet engine modified for air-cooling. Results regarding the experimental heat-transfer, temperature comparison with other cooled-blade configurations, calculated and experimental blade temperatures, cooling-air pressure drop, and structural reliability are provided.

Temperature in a J47-25 Turbojet-Engine Combustor and Turbine Sections During Steady-State and Transient Operation in a Sea-Level Test Stand

From Summary: "In order to determine the conditions of engine operation causing the most severe thermal stresses in the hot parts of a turbojet engine, a J47-25 engine was instrumented with thermocouples and operated to obtain engine material temperatures under steady-state and transient conditions. Temperatures measured during rated take-off conditions of nozzle guide vanes downstream of a single combustor differed on the order of 400 degrees F depending on the relation of the blades position to the highest temperature zone of the burner. Under the same operation conditions, measured midspan temperatures in a nozzle guide vane in the highest temperature zone of a combustor wake ranged from approximately 1670 degrees F at leading and trailing edges to 1340 degrees F at midchord on the convex side of the blade."
