Fast-neutron coincidence-counter manual (open access)

Fast-neutron coincidence-counter manual

The fast neutron counter (FNC) described in this report is a computer-based assay system employing fast-pulse counting instrumentation. It is installed below a glove box in the metal electrorefining area of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Plutonium Processing Facility. The instrument was designed to assay plutonium salts and residues from this process and to verify the mass of electrorefined metal. Los Alamos National Laboratory Groups Q-1, Q-3, and CMB-11 carried out a joint test and evaluation plan of this instrument between May 1978 and May 1979. The results of that evaluation, a description of the FNC, and operating instructions for further use are given in this report.

L/sub III/-edge densitometer operations manual

This report describes briefly the operation and maintenance of an L/sub III/-edge densitometer. The instrument is optimized for 50 g/l of special nuclear material, but yields better than 0.5% precision in 1000-s assays over a concentration range of 10 to 90 g/l. It can determine uranium and plutonium concentrations in a 2-ml sample cell and has been designed for both static and flowing solution measurements.

Instruction Manual, Mercury Relay Pulse Generator Model 1-1212C

The Model Q-1212C Pulser is a single frequency (60 pps) generator whose output waveform is characterized by a rise-time of less than 4 mµsec and, depending upon the method of termination, an exponential decay having a time constant of 300 or 600µsec. The waveform approximates that produced by a radiation detector. The waveform approximates that produced by a radiation detector. The maximum available output from the instrument is 10 volts, positive or negative polarity, and is continuously adjustable by means of step switches and a 10-turn potentiometer. The potentiometer has a linearity of 0.1%.

Dounreay Shuffler diagnostic software operations manual

This operations manual describes the test software for the Dounreay Shuffler. The Shuffler is an assay system, controlled by a Commodore PET computer, that measures the plutonium content in leached hulls at the fuel reprocessing plant in Dounreay, Scotland. The Shuffler contains a /sup 252/Cf neutron source that is moved between storage and irradiation locations to obtain measurement data. A stepping motor control (SMC) module operates the Shuffler and accepts commands from the PET to move the source. This manual briefly describes the Shuffler and provides details on running and using the diagnostic software program. The communications protocol for message transmittal between the PET and SMC is defined and a detailed example of message sending is presented in an appendix.

Insolation data manual and direct normal solar radiation data manual (open access)

Insolation data manual and direct normal solar radiation data manual

The Insolation Data Manual presents monthly averaged data which describes the availability of solar radiation at 248 National Weather Service (NWS) stations, principally in the United States. Monthly and annual average daily insolation and temperature values have been computed from a base of 24--25 years of data, generally from 1952--1975, and listed for each location. Insolation values represent monthly average daily totals of global radiation on a horizontal surface and are depicted using the three units of measurement: kJ/m{sup 2} per day, Btu/ft{sup 2} per day and langleys per day. Average daily maximum, minimum and monthly temperatures are provided for most locations in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. Heating and cooling degree-days were computed relative to a base of 18.3 C (65 F). For each station, global {bar K}{sub T} (cloudiness index) values were calculated on a monthly and annual basis. Global {bar K}{sub T} is an index of cloudiness and indicates fractional transmittance of horizontal radiation, from the top of the atmosphere to the earth's surface. The second section of this volume presents long-term monthly and annual averages of direct normal solar radiation for 235 NWS stations, including a discussion of the basic derivation process. This effort is in response …

Identification of priority rail projects for Texas: initial methodology/user manual and guidebook

"This project developed a system of evaluative tools for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to prioritize its investments in rail-related projects on a statewide basis. This work is meant to ensure that the limited available funding for rail projects is applied in the most beneficial and efficient manner and is focused upon addressing TxDOT's strategic goals. From the findings, researches recommend a transparent methodology for evaluating proposed rail projects and establishing an initial process through which rail-related investments can periodically be re-evaluated."

The HIBEAM Manual (open access)

The HIBEAM Manual

HIBEAM is a 2 1/2D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code developed in the late 1990's in the Heavy-Ion Fusion research program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The major purpose of HIBEAM is to simulate the transverse (i.e., X-Y) dynamics of a space-charge-dominated, non-relativistic heavy-ion beam being transported in a static accelerator focusing lattice. HIBEAM has been used to study beam combining systems, effective dynamic apertures in electrostatic quadrupole lattices, and emittance growth due to transverse misalignments. At present, HIBEAM runs on the CRAY vector machines (C90 and J90's) at NERSC, although it would be relatively simple to port the code to UNIX workstations so long as IMSL math routines were available.

Biosafety Manual (open access)

Biosafety Manual

Work with or potential exposure to biological materials in the course of performing research or other work activities at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) must be conducted in a safe, ethical, environmentally sound, and compliant manner. Work must be conducted in accordance with established biosafety standards, the principles and functions of Integrated Safety Management (ISM), this Biosafety Manual, Chapter 26 (Biosafety) of the Health and Safety Manual (PUB-3000), and applicable standards and LBNL policies. The purpose of the Biosafety Program is to protect workers, the public, agriculture, and the environment from exposure to biological agents or materials that may cause disease or other detrimental effects in humans, animals, or plants. This manual provides workers; line management; Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Division staff; Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) members; and others with a comprehensive overview of biosafety principles, requirements from biosafety standards, and measures needed to control biological risks in work activities and facilities at LBNL.

Ziptrack manual (open access)

Ziptrack manual

A phenolic cart holding 3 mutually perpendicular search coils is moved through an luminum beam into the magnetic field. Coil voltages re integrated and digitized through a Data Translation 1712 ADC. The cart is controlled and the data is processed by an on-line PDP-11/05 computer. The results are displayed on a Tektronix 4010 terminal, stored on 9 track, 800 bpi tapes, and optionally recorded on a hard copy. Software on a floppy disk controls the system. The position of the cart is located by an encoder and is checked along the beam line by optical switches. One encoder count equals 0.01945 in.. The X and Y positions are changed by manipulators at each end of the beam. 625 horizontal or 500 vertical counts equal 1 in.. The desired field mapping can be automatically set up by programming a grid of encoder counts on the ''SHOW STATUS'' chart. A ziptrack command summary is given. Following that is a typical procedure for ziptrack operations. Also attached are time constants for the integrators and coil calibrations for 30 ft. and 100 ft. long cables.

User`s manual for elegant Program Version 12.4, Manual Version 1

Elegant stands for ``Electron Generation and Tracking,`` a somewhat out-of-date description of a fully 6D accelerator program that now does much more than generate particle distributions and track them elegant, written entirely in the C programming language, uses a variant of the MAD input format to describe accelerators, which may be either transport lines, circular machines, or a combination thereof. Program execution is driven by commands in a namelist format. This document describes the features available in elegant, listing the commands and their arguments. The differences between elegant and MAD formats for describing accelerators are listed. A series of examples of elegant input and output are given. Finally, appendices are included describing the post-processing programs.
