Interview with Salvador Avila, a civil rights activist from Canutillo, Texas. Mr. Avila discusses his early life, education, career, race relations and his involvement with civil rights and community organizations in the El Paso area.

Victor Hernandez was born in the Chamizal area of El Paso, Texas. Once the area was bought by the federal government to build the Chamizal National Monument, his family moved the the Lower Valley of El Paso, Texas. While in high school, he was part of the ROTC. Hernandez was salsa part of the ROTC at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he graduated from. Hernandez then went to law school at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He stayed in Lubbock and served in the National Guard—with which he served in Operation Desert Storm. Upon his return to Lubbock, Hernandez practiced law and ran for City Council. Hernandez served several terms as a city council member and ran for mayor in 2016, a race he lost.

Interview with Salvador Balcorta, the CEO of Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe clinic in El Paso. Mr. Balcorta discusses his work in providing healthcare in El Paso and surrounding communities, his Chicano activism,working against gang violence, the Chicano AIDS Coalition, substandard housing and education in El Paso. This is the second of two interviews Mr. Balcorta participated in.

Interview with Lorena Andrade, civil rights and labor activist from El Paso, Texas. Ms. Andrade was born in Los Angeles, California and attended the University of Minnesota, where she became involved with Chicano activism. In El Paso, she has been an advocate for labor and founded the organization La Mujer Obrera, The Working Woman, to support women affected by NAFTA.

Alice E. Valdez was born in El Paso, and grew up in a middle class, Anglo and Mexican American community. She discusses her father's WWII experience to detail. Ms. Valdez was involved in the arts from an early age through church groups and in school activities. She attended the University of Texas at El Paso where she was part of the band and graduated with a degree in music. She recalled the 1966 Texas Western College (name prior to UTEP) NCAA Basketball Championship during her college experience. Upon graduation, Ms. Valdez moved with her husband to Atlanta for his military service. She moved to Houston in 1971. Due to her arts background, she became involved in creating arts programs for children and subsequently founded the Multicultural Education Counseling through the Arts Center, (MECA).

Interview with Alicia Chacon, the first Mexican-American woman to be elected as a city council representative from El Paso, Texas. She was also elected to the school board and as county clerk. Chacon discusses her community involvement and political career, including working in the Jimmy Carter administration.

Interview with Carlos Marentes, a farm labor organizer and farm worker advocate from the Juarez-El Paso border region. He founded the Border Agricultural Workers Project and participates in local, state, and national organizations dealing with inequality and climate change. In his interview, Marentes discusses his early life and activism.

Ms. Cortez was born and raised in El Paso, Texas in the Bel Air area. She was responsible for her siblings and her home from a very early age. Shortly after finishing her studies, she worked as a parole officer; after she became privy to several adverse working conditions, she increased her involvement in the local union. Ms. Cortez moved to Austin in the 1990s, and has worked for Travis County ever since.

Lilia Escajeda was born in El Paso, Texas. She grew up between El Paso, Van Horn, and Amarillo; and she remembers going to segregated schools in Van Horn. She settled in Amarillo as an adult after her husband died, and she eventually became the first female loan-officer for any bank in Amarillo, at the Amarillo National Bank. She joined various community organizations, boards, and became both the first Mexican American women Amarillo College board member and City Commissioner (later City Council Member).

Daniel Caudillo was born to Mexican immigrants in Odessa, Texas. He grew up as a migrant child with a home base in Odessa. Caudillo graduated from Permian High School in 2000, and then briefly attended Odessa College and the University of Texas-Permian Basin. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 2003 and then the Law School of Texas Tech University in 2007. Caudillo then went to work for an immigration law firm in El Paso, Texas; he opened his own law firm dedicated to immigration law in 2008 with offices in both El Paso and Odessa. Caudillo advises the public on immigration law through various non-profits.

Juan Chávez was born in Colorado of ethnic Mexicans. As a young child, his father died and his family moved from a Colorado mining town to Muleshoe, Texas. In Muleshoe, Chávez remembers facing discrimination and African American children having to go to an African American school. He, as most other ethnic Mexican children in Muleshoe at the time, left school after seventh grade and began working. As a young man, he joined Chicanos Unidos Campesinos, a Muleshoe organization. He also helped lead the Raza Unida Party in the Southern Plains of Texas. He was also a part of the Brown Berets, the UFW, and the Texas Farmworkers Union. He attended demonstrations and marches in various cities like San Antonio, El Paso, Austin, and Washington D.C. with this various parties/groups/organizations. Chavez became the first Mexican American Muleshoe city council member and later the first Mexican American Bailey County Commissioner.

Nick Hernandez was born and raised in Odessa, Texas. He attended Milam Elementary, Dunbar Junior High, and Ector High School before obtaining his GED at Southwest State University in San Marcos, Texas while working within Job Core; Hernandez was only fourteen when he obtained his GED. As a teenager, he took an interest in cars, which eventually led him to study car body work, which he took and taught others. Influenced by Raul Guerrero, originally from Pecos and educated at the University of Texas at El Paso, Hernandez helped start the Brown Berets chapter of Odessa, Texas. Hernandez helped lead the community protests against police brutality regarding the Larry Lozano beating and killing by the Odessa Police Department. Hernandez is now in the Hall of Fame of Lowrider Magazine and is part of Taste of Latin Car Club.

Mr. Clerkley discussed his career as a local educator and the history of the black community in Corpus Christi

Jovita Casarez was born in Acuña, across the border from Del Rio. After marrying, she and her family settled in Del Rio and started migrating to many different parts of the United States to work in the fields. After her husband was injured on the job in the 1970s, the family had to move to Madison, Wisconsin so that he could receive treatment. There, she started her career as an organizer after being hired by a farmworkers' rights organization. Upon their return to Del Rio, the Cazares established in San Felipe; a seasoned activist, Jovita became deeply enmeshed in local politics and grassroots activism. Cazares talks at length about several events that impacted her life, including the 1998 floods that destroyed her house, the death of her daughter and other personal and family struggles. In the mid 1990s, Cazares was the plaintiff in Cazares v. Val Verde County, a lawsuit that challenged the practice of allowing former Laughlin AFB personnel from submitting absentee ballots for local elections.

Interview with Rafael Torres, community leader from Laredo, Texas. In the interview, Torres discusses his family background, geography and politics in Laredo, experiences in school, participating in Teacher Corps, and activism in Crystal City.
